This study aimed to establish marine water quality criteria (MWQC) for emerging chemicals of concern (ECCs) for protecting aquatic life in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of South China. Despite the frequent occurrence and elevated concentrations of these ECCs in the GBA, there is a lack of regional MWQC for these contaminants. We screened 21 common ECCs that were classified into the following six groups: (1) new persistent organic contaminants; (2) brominated flame retardants; (3) perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances; (4) pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs); (5) plasticizers; and (6) personal care products. Globally, MWQC for PhACs remain largely unavailable despite their increasing occurrence in marine environments. Using an integrative scientific approach, we derived interim MWQC for the GBA with specific protection goals. The approach described herein can be applied for the derivation of MWQC for ECCs and the establishment of guidelines for ecological risk assessment in the GBA and other regions.

The crude electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has caused severe contamination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the local environment, begging the question of whether wildlife like birds living at e-waste sites are suffering from adverse effects. We examined several oxidative status markers and their relationships with hepatic concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) that inhabit an e-waste site in South China. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Sigma PCBs (19100 ng/g) and Sigma PBDEs (507 ng/g) in kingfishers from e-waste site were several orders of magnitude higher than those in the species from a reference site. Correspondingly, hepatic concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in kingfishers from the e-waste site were significantly higher than those detected in the reference population, suggesting oxidative distress in the birds breeding at the e-waste site. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the liver from the exposed group were significantly lower compared with the reference group, while the opposite trend was observed for glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Significantly positive correlations were observed between PCB or PBDE concentrations and the levels of MDA and ROS; while negative correlations were found for enzymatic activities of SOD and CAT. Overall, our results may suggest a potential linkage between exposure to e-waste-derived pollutants and elevated oxidative stress, thereby indicating a potential oxidative stress-related health effects in common kingfisher breeding at the e-waste site.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are commonly used as flame retardants (FRs) and plasticizers. The usage of OPEs has increased recently due to the ban of several brominated flame retardants, but information on levels in the environment, including the indoor environment is still limited. We investigated the occurrence and distribution of 12 OPEs in urban house dust from Vancouver, Canada; Istanbul, Turkey; and Cairo, Egypt. The medianSOPE concentration was 41.4 mu g/g in the Vancouver samples while median levels in Istanbul and Cairo were significantly lower. The median composition profiles of OPEs in Vancouver and Cairo were dominated by tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), accounting for 56 and 92% of total OPEs respectively while it showed a detection frequency of only 14% in Istanbul. Tris (2-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant chlorinated OPE representing 20 and 36% of the total OPEs in Vancouver and Istanbul respectively, but was below the detection limit in the Cairo dust samples. Consistent with other studies, SOPE concentrations were similar to 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher than PBDEs and currently used flame retardants in the same dust samples. The mean estimated daily intakes (EDI) of SOPE from dust were 115, 38 and 9 ng/kg/bw/day in Vancouver, Cairo and Istanbul respectively for toddlers where adults were similar to 10 times lower. The total toddler OPE intake ranged from 115 to 2900, 38 to 845 and from9 to 240 ng/kg bw/day across the three cities. TBOEP had the largest contribution to the EDI in both toddler and adults, where toddler TBOEP exposures via dust represented 4% to 80%, 2% to 44% and 0.1% to 6% of the Reference Doses (RfD) in the mean and high intake scenarios for toddlers in Vancouver, Cairo and Istanbul respectively. Various aromatic nitriles could be obtained in good yields by the treatment of aryl bromides with n-butyllithium and then pivalonitrile, followed by the treatment with molecular iodine at 70 degrees C, without metal cyanides under transition-metal-free conditions. The present reaction proceeds through the radical beta-elimination of imino-nitrogen-centered radicals formed from the reactions of imines and N-iodoimines under warming conditions. To achieve high photovoltaic performance of bulk hetero-junction organic solar cells (OSCs), a range of critical factors including absorption profiles, energy level alignment, charge carrier mobility and miscibility of donor and acceptor materials should be carefully considered. For electron-donating materials, the deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level that is beneficial for high open-circuit voltage is much appreciated. However, a new issue in charge transfer emerges when matching such a donor with an acceptor that has a shallower HOMO energy level. More to this point, the chemical strategies used to enhance the absorption coefficient of acceptors may lead to increased molecular crystallinity, and thus result in less controllable phase-separation of photoactive layer. Therefore, to realize balanced photovoltaic parameters, the donor-acceptor combinations should simultaneously address the absorption spectra, energy levels, and film morphologies. Here, we selected two non-fullerene acceptors, namely BTPT-4F and BTPTT-4F, to match with a wide-bandgap polymer donor P2F-EHp consisting of an imide-functionalized benzotriazole moiety, as these materials presented complementary absorption and well-matched energy levels. By delicately optimizing the blend film morphology, we demonstrated an unprecedented power conversion efficiency of over 16% for the device based on P2F-EHp:BTPTT-4F, suggesting the great promise of materials matching toward high-performance OSCs.

In this work, Al grafted SBA-16 (Al-SBA-16) is converted into a fully crystalline hierarchical mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite with hydrothermal stability by steam assisted crystallization under controlled conditions. The secondary mesoporosity is due to reorganization and recrystallization events happening upon steaming the precursor. Two mesoporous aluminosilicates (Al-SBA-16s) are used as the precursors of zeolites. The precursors are obtained by post-synthetic Al grafting on the silica walls of SBA-16 with aluminium isopropoxide and sodium aluminate. Mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites obtained from the Al-SBA-16 precursors and commercial ZSM-5 are characterized using XRD, XRF, FT-IR, TEM, N-2 adsorption, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR, and TPD of NH3. The results indicated the presence of intraparticle mesoporosity in the prepared mesoporous zeolites and they have comparable crystallinity with commercial ZSM-5. Catalytic activity of the synthesized mesoporous zeolites in benzylation of mesitylene is found to be comparatively more than commercial ZSM-5, which shows existence of micro/meso hierarchical structure in the mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites. The aluminium sources, aluminium isopropoxide and sodium aluminate have a remarkable influence on the textural, acidity, and hydrothermal stability characteristics of the synthesized mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites.

Aryl-aryl cross-coupling constitutes one of the most widely used procedures for the synthesis of high-value materials that range from pharmaceuticals to organic electronics and conducting polymers. The assembly of (hetero)biaryl scaffolds generally requires multiple steps; coupling partners must be functionalized before the key bond-forming event is considered. The development of selective C-H arylation processes in arenes-which sidestep the need for prefunctionalized partners-is thus crucial for streamlining the construction of these key architectures. Here we report an expedient, one-pot assembly of (hetero)biaryl motifs using photocatalysis and two non-prefunctionalized arene partners. The approach is underpinned by the functionalization of a C-H bond in an arene coupling partner using the interrupted Pummerer reaction. A unique pairing of the organic photoredox catalyst and the intermediate dibenzothiophenium salts enables highly selective reduction in the presence of sensitive functionalities. The utility of the metal-free, one-pot strategy is exemplified by the synthesis of a bioactive natural product and the modification of complex molecules of societal importance.

Here, we report on a reproducible one-pot synthesis of high-quality and monodispersed CdS semiconducting nanocrystals (NCs) by mixing precursors cadmium acetate and elemental sulfur into the new solvent system of dibenzyl ether and oleylamine without using any extra reagent or precursor activator. The NCs (5 nm) exhibited a dominant band-edge emission with a good photoluminescence quantum yield of 13.76% without trap emission. The CdS NCs were characterized using UV?Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The practical efficiency of the synthesized NCs was proved by applying the synthesized CdS NCs as the tracer in the engineering of an immunosandwich biosensor to evaluate the cardiac troponin (cTn) marker for the diagnosis and monitoring of myocardial infarction (MI). The biosensor revealed significant analytical efficiency with the limit of detection of 2 ng L-1 and the linear dynamic range of 5?1000 ng L-1, which is lower than the existing cutoff values (13?20 ng L-1). Having capitalized on the anodic stripping voltammetry method, the screen-printed biosensor could efficiently detect the cTn markers. Therefore, the biosensor is proposed to be used in clinical settings for fast, sensitive, and accurate monitoring of cTn markers.

Optical tissue clearing using dibenzyl ether (DBE) or BABB (1 part benzyl alcohol and 2 parts benzyl benzoate) is easy in application and allows deep-tissue imaging of a wide range of specimens. However, in both substances, optical clearing and storage times of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP)-expressing specimens are limited due to the continuous formation of peroxides and aldehydes, which severely quench fluorescence. Stabilisation of purified DBE or BABB by addition of the antioxidant propyl gallate efficiently preserves fluorescence signals in EGFP-expressing samples for more than a year. This enables longer clearing times and improved tissue transparency with higher fluorescence signal intensity. The here introduced clearing protocol termed stabilised DISCO allows to image spines in a whole mouse brain and to detect faint changes in the activity-dependent expression pattern of tdTomato.

Nowadays, environmental pollution by microplastics (<5 mm; MP) is a major issue. MP are contaminating marine organisms consumed by humans. This work studied MP contamination in two bivalve species of commercial interest: blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) sampled on the Channel coastlines (France). In parallel, 13 plastic additives and 27 hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) were quantified in bivalves flesh using SBSE-TD-GS-MS/MS to explore a possible relationship between their concentrations and MP contamination levels. MP were extracted using a 10% potassium hydroxide digestion method then identified by mu-Raman spectroscopy. The proportion of contaminated bivalves by MP ranged from 34 to 58%. Blue mussels and common cockles exhibited 0.76 +/- 0.40 and 2.46 +/- 1.16 MP/individual and between 0.15 +/- 0.06 and 0.74 +/- 035 MP/g of tissue wet weight. Some HOC and plastic additives were detected in bivalves. However, no significant Pearson or Spearman correlation was found between MP loads and plastic additives or HOC concentrations in bivalve tissues for the two species. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
