Nanocasting is a convenient way for preparing highly porous, nanostructured soft materials. Mesoporous polymer nanocasts have been reported for over a decade, however, several aspects remain to be explored further. To do so, we report a comprehensive investigation of the physicochemical characteristics of high surface area functional organic polymers and copolymers obtained by nanocasting. Divinylbenzene, styrene and chloromethyl styrene were selectively polymerized within the pores of mesoporous SBA-15 or KIT-6 silicas. Following template removal, the resulting materials were characterized. The nanocast mesoporous polymers were also modified to introduce functional groups. The success of the functionalization was assessed analytically and by model catalytic tests. The study points to the advantages of the hard templating method for structuring organic materials but also its limitations.

A theoretical and experimental study is performed for liquid-solid phase equilibria in the two-component diphenyl oxide-n-hexadecane system. The results show that this system is eutectic. Two means are chosen for the theoretical study of the system: the Schroder-Le Chatelier equations and the original UNIFAC system. Experimental studies are made via differential thermal analysis on a DSC unit. Results from the theoretical and experimental studies are presented in the formT-xdiagrams of the system. The theoretical and experimental data are compared to one another. Each way of calculating is assessed, and recommendations are made for their application. The eutectic coordinates (melting point and composition) are determined experimentally. The following values are determined experimentally for a eutectic melt: the enthalpy of melting; density at 25 degrees C; kinematic viscosity in the temperature range of 25 to 50 degrees C; flash point in an open cup; boiling point, and refractive index in the temperature range of 25 to 40 degrees C. The composition of the eutectic melt can be used in industry as a heat transfer fluid.

The catalytic regioselective C-H silylation of a wide range of alkoxy-substituted benzene derivatives with primary hydrosilane was achieved by the use of scorpionate-supported calcium benzyl complex [(Tp(Ad,iPr))Ca(p-CH2C6H4Me)(THP)] (1) (Tp(Ad,iPr) = hydrotris(3-adamantyl-5-isopropylpyrazolyl)borate, THP = tetrahydropyran) as the precatalyst. This protocol offers an atom-efficient and straightforward method for the synthesis of a variety of silyl-substituted aromatic ether derivatives without a hydrogen acceptor and free of transition metal. A template free synthesis route was developed for the synthesis of hierarchical zeolite Beta from a natural layered aluminosilicate mineral kaolin. Detailed study on the crystallization of zeolite Beta established the optimized synthesis condition, and the synthesized hierarchical Beta zeolite was fully studied by XRD, IR, SEM, TEM, BET, NH3-TPD, Py-IR and NMR techniques. The characterization results reveal that the hierarchical Beta zeolite possesses good crystallinity, bimodal pore architecture, large surface area, big pore volume, high acid site concentration and excellent hydrothermal stability. An improved catalytic performance was achieved in hierarchical Beta zeolite for the esterification of acetic acid with benzyl alcohol, and the high activity and selectivity in this zeolite are mainly attributed to the presence of mesopores for accelerating the intraparticle diffusion rate of both reactant and product. This novel synthesis methodology provides a low-cost and environmentally-benign way for the preparation of hierarchical Beta zeolite, which could serve a sustainable platform of large-scale production of hierarchical zeolite for practical application.

Isohexides are versatile carbohydrate-based building blocks for designing biodegradable polymers with tunable biodegradability and enhanced material properties owing to their unique high structural rigidity and hydrophilicity. However, the limited reactivity and thermal stability of isohexides, especially the isomers with endo-hydroxyl groups, hamper their practical applications. In this work, fully aliphatic copolyesters based on two isohexide stereoisomers, isosorbide (IS) and isomannide (IM), were comparatively synthesized via a mild lipase-catalyzed polymerization [enzymatic polymerization (EP)] technique. The products were obtained with fairly high molecular weights (M-n values: 15,300-31,500 g.mol(-1)), negligible degree of discoloration, and 20-40 degrees C higher thermal stabilities (T-d,T-5% : 335-360 degrees C) compared to those of their counterparts obtained by melt polymerization (MP). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that the endo-OH is preferred to the exo-OH under the EP process having a high hydrogen-bonding frequency with the catalytic site of CALB (lipase immobilized from Candida antarctica, CALB), and it also requires considerably low energy (70-100 kJ.mol(-1)) to form the second tetrahedral transition-state intermediates. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) study further elucidates the interesting influence of the EP process on inducing specific beta-type crystalline structures.

Here we present a protocol for analyses of axon regeneration and density in unsectioned adult mouse spinal cord. This includes methods for injury and tracing of dorsal column sensory and corticospinal axons; clearing and staining of unsectioned spinal cord; visualization of axon degeneration and regeneration in cleared and uncleared specimens using two-photon microscopy; and either manual or semi-automatic analysis of axon density and regeneration in 3D space using Imaris and ImageJ software. This protocol can be used to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying nervous system degeneration and regeneration and to establish the therapeutic efficacy of candidate neuroregenerative treatments. Because tissue sectioning is not required, this protocol enables unambiguous evaluation of regeneration and greatly accelerates the speed at which analyses can be conducted. Surgical procedures take < 30 min per mouse, with a wait period of 2 weeks between axonal injury and tracing and 2-8 weeks between tracing and tissue processing. Clearing and immunolabeling take similar to 1-2 weeks, depending on the size of the sample. Imaging and analysis can be performed in 1 d. A green recyclable cellulose-supported Pd(salen)-type catalyst was synthesized through sequential three steps: chlorination with thionyl chloride, modification by ethylenediamine, and the formation of Schiff base with salicylaldehyde to immobilize palladium chloride through multiple binding sites. This novel heterogeneous cellulosic Pd(salen)-type catalytic complex was fully characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XPS, ICP-AES and TG. The traditional cross-coupling chemistry, such as Suzuki, Heck, Sonogashira, Buchwald-Hartwig amination and etherification, was then investigated in the presence of the above cellulose-palladium nanoparticle. Studies have shown that the synthesized catalyst shows high activity and efficiency for all types of transformations, providing the corresponding carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom coupling products in a general and mild manner. Here, we report the first example of the utilization of p-nitro-tetradecyloxy-calix[4]arene (C4A-NO2) as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated C4A-NO2 column exhibited a high column efficiency of 3815 plates per m and moderate polarity. The C4A-NO2 column was investigated for its separation performance and retention behaviours by utilizing a wide variety of isomer mixtures, covering alkylated benzenes and naphthalenes, alkenes, furans, alcohols, benzaldehydes, phenols and halogenated anilines. Importantly, the C4A-NO2 column exhibited high resolving capability for both aliphatic and aromatic isomers. Particularly, it displayed advantageous resolving capability over the commercial DB-17 column for halogenated aniline isomers. This work provides a good reference for designing calixarene derivatives as GC stationary phases, which is important for developing a family of stationary phases with specific selectivity.

Rice husk, rich in silica and abundantly available as waste, is presently destroyed by burning, which creates environmental issues. Thus, it will be advantageous if this rice husk waste can be used for preparation of valuable products. One of the application is its use as silica source in the synthesis of zeolites like ZSM-5, which are silico-aluminates. Rice husk waste is available in wide range of particle sizes in agricultural farms. There is no study available in open literature on use of these wide particle ranges for its direct application. This paper is an attempt to use wide particle size rice husk, its effect on ZSM-5 synthesis and its physico-chemical properties. Further these prepared ZSM-5 catalyst was evaluated for benzylation of mesitylene reaction. The study found that, rice husk of 600 mu m particle size is optimum as far as ZSM-5 synthesis, its physicochemical properties and further its application in mesitylene benzylation reaction.
