The wastewater from the semicoke plant (WWSCP) was extracted multiple times with an isometric of di-Me carbonate (DMC)-cyclohexane mixed solvent at room temperature to obtain an organic phase (OP) with a high concentration of phenols. Ether (OPCP) was obtained by catalytic conversion of OP over catalyst Na-CH3ONa/�Al2O3 at 210掳C and reaction time of 2.5 h. Both OP and OPCP were analyzed with a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) and quadrupole exactive orbitrap mass spec trometer (QPEOTMS). The results showed that only DMC, phenol, o-Cresol and other monohydric phenols were detected in OP, and only other saturated ethers such as anisole and O-methylanisole were detected in OPCP. Through the study of the catalytic conversion of WWSCP-related model compound, it was found that Na-CH3ONa/�Al2O3 could effectively activate (deprotonate) phenol into phenate, and the strong nucleophilic oxyanion of phenate would attack the Me carbon and carbonyl carbon on DMC to obtain Me and methoxy groups. Thereby, phenate can be combined with Me and methoxy groups to acquire the product anisole. In addition, the catalyst Na-CH3ONa/�Al2O3 was found to still have high catalytic activity after 10 repeated cycles. It was speculated that this was related to the abundant microporous and mesoporous structure of the catalyst Na-CH3ONa/�Al2O3. Herein, a novel micro/nano rod flame retardant SDPPNi, composed of diphenylphosphinyl groups, Schiff base and Nickel (II), are synthesized by self-assembly based on the coordination reactions. The UP with 25 wt% SDPPNi (UP/SDPPNi25), shows quite excellent fire-safety performance, and its limiting oxygen index is as high as 38.0%, showing extremely high flame retardant efficiency. Meanwhile, its peak heat release rate, total heat release, fire growth rate, and maximum smoke d. (Dsmax) values are significantly reduced by 69%, 40%, 72%, and 42%, resp. During burning, the SDPPNi promotes UP to form compact char layers composed of pyridine derivatives, phosphoric-oxygenic compounds, and nickel-oxides, inhibiting the heat and mass transfer. Meanwhile, the SDPPNi also releases phosphoros-containing volatiles that can capture some small mol. fragments and break off the chain reaction of combustion. Therefore, a state-of-art strategy is proposed to endow UP resins with ultra-high fire-safety performance. Crosslinking strategies explored include redox initiation and photo initiation, with an effort to adapt the suggested synthesis routes to benign conditions. The different functionalization strategies were shown to influence the resulting gel’s properties. Varying the crosslinking media was found to be a strong tool to tune the properties of the gels. Modifications were in all cases verified by means of NMR and FTIR, and the gels were characterized with respect to swelling capacity and rheol. parameters.
