In-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry is a powerful tool to understand the structures and reaction mechanisms of electrochemical interfaces yet usually suffers from a low sensitivity and detection efficiency. Herein, we develop a windowless thin layer electrochemical cell design to improve the detection efficiency of in-situ Raman spectroscopy for practical nanoscale electrocatalysts. This was achieved by perforating a hole in the optical window of the cell, which not only eliminates the refraction of light by the window but also induces a meniscus thin electrolyte layer on the working electrode, thus significantly improving the detection efficiency of Raman spectra. We successfully applied thismethod to conduct in-situ Raman spectroscopy of structural evolutions of two representative Ni-Fe oxide catalysts (layered double hydroxides and spinel oxides) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis. It was shown that both catalysts underwent surface transformation to oxyhydroxides and formed active oxygen species at OER relevant potentials. However, the extent of the surface transformation was much lower on the Ni-Fe spinel catalyst, accounting for its lower OER activity. We further show that adding a carbon support can promote the surface transformation of Ni-Fe spinel to oxyhydroxides, thus significantly increasing the electrocatalytic activities. The established windowless thin layer method provides a new way to conduct in-situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy of a wide range of materials and may be also combined with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic methods.

A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

Formula: C12H10O. I found the field of Environmental Sciences & Ecology very interesting. Saw the article The effect of long-range transport, trophic position and diet specialization on legacy contaminant occurrence in great skuas, Stercorarius skua, breeding across the Northeast Atlantic published in 2019, Reprint Addresses Borga, K (corresponding author), Univ Oslo, Dept Biosci, Pb 1066, N-0316 Oslo, Norway.. The CAS is 101-84-8. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of Diphenyl oxide.

High levels of halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs) have been found in the marine predatory seabird great skua (Stercorarius skua) from breeding colonies in the Northeastern Atlantic, with large unexplained inter-colony variation. The present study aimed at analyzing if the HOCs occurrence in breeding great skuas in remote colonies was explained by local baseline food web exposure determined by long-range transport, or by ecological factors such as diet specialization and relative trophic position in the breeding area. The occurrence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was analyzed in plasma of 204 adult great skuas collected over two years (2008 and 2009) and 5 colonies across the North-Atlantic from Shetland to Svalbard. The HOCs levels in plasma ranged across two orders of magnitude, from 40 to 7600 ng/g (wet weight) and differed significantly across the great skua colonies. The variation in contaminant occurrence among colonies did not reflect long-range transport through a latitudinal or remoteness gradient, as the second northernmost colony (Bjornoya), had the highest contaminant concentrations. No latitudinal or remoteness gradient was evident in the contaminant pattern among the colonies. The contaminant levels increased significantly with increasing delta N-15 values, and regurgitated pellets of undigested prey suggested that great skuas with higher delta N-15 values had a higher proportion of bird prey in their diet, mostly seabirds. In contrast, great skuas from colonies with lower delta N-15 and lower contaminant level fed mostly on fish. The enrichment of delta N-13 increased with decreasing delta N-15 and lower contaminant levels. Therefore, individual behavior of great skuas, such as migration strategies and diet specialization, rather than long-range transport and thus baseline food web exposure, explain among and within colony variance in contaminant occurrence. Electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and large electroactive surface areas are the most important factors in determining the performance of various flexible electrodes in energy storage devices. Herein, a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly-induced metal electrodeposition approach is introduced to prepare a variety of highly porous 3D-current collectors with high flexibility, metallic conductivity, and large surface area. In this study, a few metal nanoparticle (NP) layers are LbL-assembled onto insulating paper for the preparation of conductive paper. Subsequent Ni electroplating of the metal NP-coated substrates reduces the sheet resistance from approximate to 10(3) to <0.1 omega sq(-1) while maintaining the porous structure of the pristine paper. Particularly, this approach is completely compatible with commercial electroplating processes, and thus can be directly extended to electroplating applications using a variety of other metals in addition to Ni. After depositing high-energy MnO NPs onto Ni-electroplated papers, the areal capacitance increases from 68 to 811 mF cm(-2) as the mass loading of MnO NPs increases from 0.16 to 4.31 mg cm(-2). When metal NPs are periodically LbL-assembled with the MnO NPs, the areal capacitance increases to 1710 mF cm(-2). Recommanded Product: 103-50-4. Despite decades-long bans on the production and use of certain chemicals, many halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) are persistent and can bioaccumulate in the marine environment with the potential to cause physiological harm to marine fauna. Highly lipid-rich tissue (e.g., marine mammal blubber) functions as a reservoir for HOCs, and selecting ideal indicator species is a priority for retrospective and proactive screening efforts. We selected five marine mammal species as possible indicators for the Southern California Bight (SCB) and applied a non-targeted analytical method paired with an automated data reduction strategy to catalog a broad range of known, known but unexpected, and unknown compounds in their blubber. A total of 194 HOCs were detected across the study species (n = 25 individuals), 81% of which are not routinely monitored, including 30 halogenated natural products and 45 compounds of unknown structure and origin. The cetacean species (long-beaked common dolphin, short-beaked common dolphin, and Risso’s dolphin) averaged 128 HOCs, whereas pinnipeds (California sea lion and Pacific harbor seal) averaged 47 HOCs. We suspect this disparity can be attributed to differences in life history, foraging strategies, and/or enzyme-mediated metabolism. Our results support proposing (1) the long- and short-beaked common dolphin as apex marine predator sentinels for future and retrospective biomonitoring of the SCB ecosystem and (2) the use of non-targeted contaminant analyses to identify and prioritize emerging contaminants. The use of a sentinel marine species together with the non-targeted analytical approach will enable a proactive approach to environmental contaminant monitoring. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Among various techniques for treating polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), adsorption and removal methods using carbon materials are widely applied to remove and decompose organic pollutants with high efficiency. Of many carbon allotropes, theoretically developed graphyne has numerous promising applicabilities for its strong carbon chemical bond, large conjugate system, good chemical stability, and excellent electrical conductivity. To evaluate the PBDE removal capability of graphyne as an adsorbent, we investigated the adsorption properties of ten PBDE species on graphyne using the density functional theory calculation. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between the hydrophobicity and adsorption characteristics of PBDEs and found that the adsorption energy increased with the hydrophobicity and the bromination number, indicating a linear relationship for only seven samples. In BDE154, BDE183, and BDE209, however, this linearity was not clearly found because when the bromine groups of the PBDE structures were located at 6,6 ‘, two phenyl rings repelled each other to limit adsorption. From a water solvation model, graphyne also indicated a high adsorption capacity of PBDEs. It is worth noting that graphyne is considered to be a suitable material for PBDE adsorption, and the adsorption reaction may vary depending on the structural characteristics and hydrophobicity of the PBDEs.

Today, using new energy storage systems for peak shaving and load leveling with the approach of maximizing the efficiency of energy systems is inevitable. In the present study, a cogeneration integrated structure of power and cooling using liquefied natural gas regasification and solar collectors is developed and analyzed. In this regard, the purposes can be achieved by producing liquid air at an off-peak time and storing it as a cryogenic energy storage system and recovering it on-peak time. This new integrated structure generates 11.66 MW power and 4.502 MW cooling at the on-peak time. A Kalina-based combined cooling and power cycle and a gas turbine power generation unit are used to generate power from liquid air. Phase change material is used to store the heat from the compressed air entering the liquefaction stage (at the off-peak time) and recovering it at the on-peak time as the heat source of the Kalina cycle. Also, the solar parabolic trough collector provided with Zahedan climatic conditions the heat required for the direct expansion section. The electrical storage, round-trip, energy storage, and exergy efficiencies of the proposed energy storage system are 57.62%, 45.44%, 79.87%, and 40.17%, respectively. The most exergy destruction belongs to the heat exchangers section, which accounts for 50.85% of the total exergy destruction. One of the important results of the parametric study is the increase of round-trip and electrical storage efficiencies up to 47.59% and 61.60%, respectively, by minimizing the pressure of the inlet air to the liquefaction stage while maximizing the pressure of the liquid air inlet to the power generation stage.
