Nowadays, environmental pollution by microplastics (<5 mm; MP) is a major issue. MP are contaminating marine organisms consumed by humans. This work studied MP contamination in two bivalve species of commercial interest: blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) sampled on the Channel coastlines (France). In parallel, 13 plastic additives and 27 hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) were quantified in bivalves flesh using SBSE-TD-GS-MS/MS to explore a possible relationship between their concentrations and MP contamination levels. MP were extracted using a 10% potassium hydroxide digestion method then identified by mu-Raman spectroscopy. The proportion of contaminated bivalves by MP ranged from 34 to 58%. Blue mussels and common cockles exhibited 0.76 +/- 0.40 and 2.46 +/- 1.16 MP/individual and between 0.15 +/- 0.06 and 0.74 +/- 035 MP/g of tissue wet weight. Some HOC and plastic additives were detected in bivalves. However, no significant Pearson or Spearman correlation was found between MP loads and plastic additives or HOC concentrations in bivalve tissues for the two species. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Species of herbaceous flowering perennial plant of the family Campanulaceae such as Platycodon grandiflorum (P. grandiflorum) and Codonopsis lanceolata (C. lanceolata) widely used in traditional medicine to treat different diseases. In spite of different medicinal results after consumption of the plants, it is hard to distinguish between two of them, because of their similar morphological characteristics. In this study, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) – based metabolite profiling approach was performed and examined to discriminate tuberous roots of P. grandiflorum and C. lanceolate for medicinal purposes. Two basic approaches for sample preparation, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solvent extraction were adopted. Multivariate statistical techniques, such as orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) plots showed significant differences between P. grandiflorum and C. lanceolata for polar primary and volatile organic metabolites. A number of potential candidates were suggested as the chemomarkers for discrimination of two plants.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), and unsubstituted/methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs/Me-PAHs) were simultaneously monitored in the air samples collected from Vietnamese urban and vehicular waste processing areas by using polyurethane foam-based passive air sampling (PUF-PAS) method. Concentrations (pg m(-3)) of organic pollutants decreased in the order: PAHs (median 29,000; range 5100-100,000) > Me-PAHs (6000; 1000-33,000) > PCBs (480; 170 -1100) > PBDEs (11; 5.3-86) > NBFRs (0.20; n. d. – 51) > BB-153 (n.d.). The difference in total PCB and PBDE concentrations between the urban and waste processing air samples was not statistically significant. Meanwhile, levels of PAHs, Me-PAHs, benzo [a]pyrene equivalents (BaP-EQs), and toxic equivalents of dioxin-like PCBs (WHO-TEQs) were much higher in the waste processing sites. This is the first report on the abundance of mono- and di-CBs (notably CB-11) in the air from a developing country, suggesting their roles as emerging and ubiquitous air pollutants. Our results have indicated potential sources of specific organic pollutants such as dioxin-like PCBs, PAHs, and Me-PAHs from improper treatment of end-of-life vehicles and other vehicle related materials (e.g., waste oils and rubber tires), as well as current emission of PCBs and PBDEs in the urban area in Vietnam. Further atmospheric monitoring studies should be conducted in this developing country that cover both legacy and emerging contaminants with a focus on areas affected by rapid urbanization and informal waste processing activities. The mild depolymerization of lignin into aromatic monomer is a grand challenge owing to the various aryl ether C-O bonds, particularly for the most abundant beta-O-4, alpha-O-4 and 4-O-5 linkages. Rod-shaped CeO2 supported AuPd bimetallic catalysts fabricated by sol-immobilization method presented robust alloy structure, as evidenced by TEM, XPS, UV-vis, and CO-DRIFTS. For the hydrogenolysis of C-O bond model compound with formic acid, Au1Pd1/CeO2 showed about 23.5 and 6 folds increase in activity compared with its monometallic counterparts Au/CeO2 and Pd/CeO2, respectively. The outstanding performance was mainly ascribed to the increased adsorption ability of electron-deficient Pd for aromatic C-O bond. Additionally, formic acid-mediated Au1Pd1/CeO2 has efficiently performed hydrogenolysis of real lignin into a variety of valuable monophenols, achieving 44.1% yield at low temperature.

Polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on polymer donors and nonfullerene small molecule acceptors are a very attractive technology for solar energy conversion, and their performance is heavily determined by film morphology. It is of considerable interest to reveal instructive morphology-performance relationships of these blends. This feature article discusses the recent advances in analysing the morphology formation of nonfullerene PSCs with an effective polymer thermodynamic quantity, i.e., Flory-Huggins interaction parameter chi. In particular, guidelines of high and low chi systems are summarized. The fundamental understanding of chi and its correlations to film morphology and photovoltaic device parameters is of utmost relevance for providing essential material design criteria, establishing suitable morphology processing guidelines, and thus advancing the practical applications of PSCs based on nonfullerene acceptors.

Psoralen is a furocoumarin natural product that intercalates within DNA and forms covalent adducts when activated by ultraviolet radiation. It is well known that this property contributes to psoralen’s clinical efficacy in several disease contexts, which include vitiligo, psoriasis, graft-versus-host disease and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Given the therapeutic relevance of psoralen and its derivatives, we attempted to synthesize psoralens with even greater potency. In this study, we report a library of 73 novel psoralens, the largest collection of its kind. When screened for the ability to reduce cell proliferation, we identified two derivatives even more cytotoxic than 4 ‘-aminomethyl-4,5 ‘,8-trimethylpsoralen (AMT), one of the most potent psoralens identified to date. Using MALDI-TOF MS, we studied the DNA adduct formation for a subset of novel psoralens and found that in most cases enhanced DNA binding correlated well with cytotoxicity. Generally, our most potent derivatives contain positively charged substituents, which we believe increase DNA affinity and enhance psoralen intercalation. Thus, we provide a rational approach to guide efforts toward further optimizing psoralens to fully capitalize on this drug class’ therapeutic potential. Finally, the structure-activity insights we have gained shed light on several opportunities to study currently underappreciated aspects of psoralen’s mechanism.

Magnetic biopolymer hybrid nanoparticles have gained a lot of attention in the field of biomedical applications. Here we present the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated magnetic clusters of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Firstly, the superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid were synthesized and characterized in terms of size, composition and magnetic properties. Secondly, magnetic nanoclusters were prepared and wrapped with HA grafted with an ethylene glycol-based copolymer. The resulting nanostructures and nanobeads were characterized using electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic measurements. The clustering of magnetite nanoparticles facilitates magnetic purification, separation, rapid attraction and controlled positioning by high field gradient micro-magnet arrays. In addition, clusters could be formed in the presence of a fluorescent drug model, which demonstrates the possibility of dual functionalization of our hybrid nanosystems: magnetic responsiveness and drug encapsulation.

Investigating environmental pollution is important to understand its impact on endangered species such as green turtles (Chelonia mydas). In this study, we investigated the accumulation and potential toxicity of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and naturally occurring MeO-PBDEs in liver, fat, kidney and muscle of turtles (n = 30) of different gender, size, year of death, location and health status. Overall, POP concentrations were low and accumulation was highest in liver and lowest in fat which is likely due to the poor health of several animals, causing a remobilization of lipids and associated compounds. PCBs and p,p’-DDE dominated the POP profiles, and relatively high MeO-PBDE concentrations (2′-MeO-BDE 68 up to 192 ng/g lw, 6-MeO-BDE 47 up to 79 ng/g lw) were detected in all tissues. Only few influences of factors such as age, gender and location were found. While concentrations were low compared to other marine wildlife, biological toxicity equivalences obtained by screening the tissue extracts using the micro-EROD assay ranged from 2.8 to 356 pg/g and the highest values were observed in muscle, followed by kidney and liver. This emphazises that pollutant mixtures found in the turtles have the potential to cause dioxin-like effects in these animals and that dioxin-like compounds should not be overlooked in future studies.
