MWW type zeolites are characterized by the presence of zeolitic layers of 2.5 nm thickness, containing 10-member ring sinusoidal channels inside and supercavities with 12-member ring openings located on their surfaces. Expansion and pillaring of layered zeolites increase the access to active sites and can enable or facilitate catalytic activity towards larger reactant molecules. This goal is explored in this work reporting the pillaring of layered zeolite MCM-56 with MWW topology by tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) treatment with the assistance of isopropanol, aimed at obtaining hierarchical micro-mesoporous systems. MCM-56 (Si/Al = 12) was synthesized with hexamethyleneimine as a structure-directing and aniline as a structure-promoting agent. Hierarchical porous systems were obtained using two different pillaring methods: (1) with TEOS only and (2) with TEOS mixed with isopropanol. The MWW framework was preserved during swelling/pillaring in both methods. Pillared zeolites obtained via alcohol-assisted pillaring possessed unique intermediate micro-mesopores with the size of about 2 nm. IR study revealed a decrease in the concentration of accessible acid centers upon pillaring. However, the fraction of acid sites on the external surface, accessible for adsorption of large molecules, increased by up to 90%. Catalytic activity was evaluated in the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol. Pillaring resulted in reduction of the acid site concentrations, but the materials retained high catalytic activity. Pillaring in the presence of alcohol produced increased turnover frequency values based on the concentrations of the external acid sites.

A total of 26 samples of surface sediments collected in the Neva River (including the St. Petersburg city area) and in the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland were analyzed for 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and 10 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of total PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in sediments ranged from <0.05 to 219pgg(-1)d.w. and from 44 to 246,600pgg(-1)d.w. respectively. The total World Health Organization toxic equivalent (WHO-TEQ(PCDD/F + PCB)) values varied between 0.01 and 59.0pgg(-1). In the majority of cases, the PCDD/F and dl-PCB concentrations do not exceed the threshold effect level (TEL) recommended by Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) as quantitative target for the sum of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. The congener profile indicates that combustion is the primary source of PCDD/Fs in most of the studied samples. For the PCBs, the historical use of technical PCB products was identified as the major source. sigma PBDE10 concentrations ranged from 0.004 to 1.8ngg(-1)d.w. The congener profile results show that BDE-47 (tetra-BDE) is the dominant congener in sediment samples. According to the sediment and water quality guidelines established in the EU (PNEC) and in Canada (FEQG), all the samples studied can be classified as lowly contaminated by PBDEs. The sediment concentrations of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and PBDEs measured in this study were comparable to or lower than those reported for other areas of the Baltic Sea. Name: Diphenyl oxide. We report an efficient procedure for the synthesis of pillared MWW zeolites (MCM-36) via integrating intercalation and hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) into one step. Specifically, two specially selected surfactants with more hydrophilicity instead of the conventional swelling agent cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were employed to increase the interlayer wetting ability and water content. The resultant intercalation and hydrolysis of TEOS occur concurrently in a confined interlayer microenvironment with enriched interlayer water and basic hexamethyleneimine (HMI). It is found that the wetting ability of swelling surfactants has a profound effect on pillarization efficiency, resulting in the different degrees of order of the layered structure, pore-size distribution, and accessibility of the acid sites of MCM-36. MCM-36 prepared using a gemini-type surfactant as a swelling agent shows a highly long-range ordered structure and enhanced catalytic activity for alkylation of benzene with benzyl alcohol compared to the one produced using conventional CTAB as a swelling agent.

alpha-Diimine niobium complexes serve as catalysts for deoxygenation of benzyl ethers by silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) to cleanly give two equivalents of the corresponding benzyl chlorides, where SiCl4 has the dual function of oxygen scavenger and chloride source with the formation of a silyl ether or silica as the only byproduct. The reaction mechanism has two successive trans-etherification steps that are mediated by the niobium catalyst, first forming one equivalent of benzyl chloride along with the corresponding silyl ether intermediate that undergoes the same reaction pathway to give the second equivalent of benzyl chloride and silyl ether.

Introduction: Gestational exposure to chemical mixtures, which is prevalent among pregnant women, may be associated with adverse childhood neurodevelopment. However, few studies have examined relations between gestational chemical mixture exposure and children’s cognitive abilities. Methods: In a cohort of 253 pregnant women and their children from Cincinnati, OH (enrolled 2003-2006), we quantified biomarker concentrations of 43 metals, phthalates, phenols, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluoroalkyl substances, and environmental tobacco smoke in blood or urine. Using k-means clustering and principal component (PC) analysis, we characterized chemical mixtures among pregnant women. We assessed children’s cognitive abilities using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-III and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for ChildrenIV at ages 5 and 8 years, respectively. We estimated covariate-adjusted differences in children’s cognitive ability scores]=cross clusters, and with increasing PC scores and individual biomarker concentrations. Results: Geometric mean biomarker concentrations were generally highest, intermediate, and lowest among women in clusters 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Children born to women in clusters 1 and 2 had 5.1 (95% CI: 9.4,-0.8) and 2.0 (95% CI: 5.5, 1,4) lower performance IQ scores compared to children in cluster 3, respectively. PC scores and individual chemical biomarker concentrations were not associated with cognitive abilities. Conclusions: In this cohort, combined prenatal exposure to phenols, certain phthalates, pesticides, and perfluoroalkyl substances was inversely associated with children’s cognition, but some individual chemical biomarker concentrations were not. Additional studies should determine if the aggregate impact of these chemicals on cognition is different from their individual effects.

Lignin valorization is significantly influenced by the degrees of lignin condensation measured by the amount of cleaved beta-O-4 ether linkages and interunit C-C linkages formed during biomass fractionation. To minimize the cleavage of aryl ether and formation of C-C linkages, a p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH)/choline chloride (ChCl) solvent system with hydrotropic properties was evaluated. The ChC1 was chosen to control the H+ concentration of the p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system. Compared with p-TsOH/H2O, the degradation of beta-O-4 was kept in a similar rate during p-TsOH/ChCl fractionation; however, the formation of C-C linkage was slower. Under 75/25 p-TsOH/ChCl mass ratio at 80 degrees C for 20 min, 76.6 % of miscanthus lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 30.9 %, and 88.9 % of wheat straw lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 33.6 %, can be dissolved. In addition, the low polar and layered structure of hydrotropic p-TsOH/ChCl system has a strong ability to dissolve lignin, which resulted in lignin with larger particle size and lower surface charge. The results also indicated that lignin from p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system has great potential for lignin depolymerization to aromatics for valorization.
