Obtaining bulk materials ordered at the nanoscale using nanoparticles as building blocks is a new challenge for scientists and is of primary interest in some research areas. In this study, we developed a simple one-pot route towards nanostructured hybrid materials based on uranium oxide through a non-hydrolytic condensation process under mild solvothermal conditions (T = 160 degrees C) using ditopic organic linkers as structuring agents. The obtained materials present a sand rose morphology composed of agglomerated nanometric sheets with a lamellar substructure. Nanometric sheets are composed of inorganic fringes consisting of a studtite phase [(UO2)O-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O that alternates with organic fringes formed by the structuring organic linker. A multiparametric study based on SAXS experiments and TEM analyses has highlighted the control of structural parameters by varying some synthesis conditions. The interlamellar distances are tunable from 1.60 nm to 1.94 nm through the length of the structuring linker and the inter-sheet distance from 1.85 nm to 2.10 nm through synthesis temperature. This efficient one-pot route appears to be very promising for the production of tunable multiscale nanostructured hybrid materials and can be implemented in many research areas, paving the way for various applications.

Toward a more rigorous inspection of food contact materials, the importance of sample preparation for nontarget screening should be addressed. Direct immersion-solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography mass spectrometry (DI-SPME-GC-MS) was optimized for nontarget screening of migrants in 3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol, and 95% ethanol food simulants by response surface methodology (RSM) in the present study. Optimum conditions were DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber, no pH adjustment for 10% and 95% ethanol simulant but pH adjustment to 7 for 3% acetic acid simulant, no salt addition, 5 min preincubation, 55 min extraction at 70 degrees C, and 8 min desorption at 250 degrees C. In addition, 9.5 times dilution of 95% ethanol samples prior to extraction was required. pH modification of 3% acetic acid samples was found to be critical for the extraction of amines. The proposed methodology was then evaluated by determining the limit of detection (LOD) as well as repeatability of 35 food contact materials-related substances. Except for those amines and diols which have a relatively high LOD, the LODs of the rest of the substances were 0.1-14.1 mu g/kg with a precision of 1.9-23.0% in 10% ethanol and were 0.1-20.2 mu g/kg with a precision of 2.5-19.6% in 3% acetic acid simulant. The LOD and precision in 95% ethanol simulant were 0.7-163.7 mu g/kg and 1.4-26.8%, respectively. The proposed method can be applied for an overall screening of migrants from these three simulants at even trace levels, though attention should be paid to some specific analytes, e.g., diols and amines, which could have a high LOD and toxicity.

We report an efficient procedure for the synthesis of pillared MWW zeolites (MCM-36) via integrating intercalation and hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) into one step. Specifically, two specially selected surfactants with more hydrophilicity instead of the conventional swelling agent cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were employed to increase the interlayer wetting ability and water content. The resultant intercalation and hydrolysis of TEOS occur concurrently in a confined interlayer microenvironment with enriched interlayer water and basic hexamethyleneimine (HMI). It is found that the wetting ability of swelling surfactants has a profound effect on pillarization efficiency, resulting in the different degrees of order of the layered structure, pore-size distribution, and accessibility of the acid sites of MCM-36. MCM-36 prepared using a gemini-type surfactant as a swelling agent shows a highly long-range ordered structure and enhanced catalytic activity for alkylation of benzene with benzyl alcohol compared to the one produced using conventional CTAB as a swelling agent.

This paper describes the pyrolysis of Poplar fluff (from Populus alba) using on-line apparatus, and carbonization process at 850 degrees C using the fixed bed reactor. Characteristics of pyrolysis products were examined. Elemental and chemical analyses were shown that Poplar fluff has higher energy content characterized by increased content of fibrous structure (particularly cellulose). Independent parallel reactions model very well describes devolatilization process. It was found that increased amount of extractives can significantly affect on increased release of light gaseous products, but declining hydrocarbons, mostly the alkanes. Liquid product is mainly composed of phenolics, aldehydes, acids, esters and ketones. The carbonization process produces the great abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH’s), where naphthalene is the most abundant. Mechanism for PAH’s formation was suggested. This study represents the first step in a much wider and more comprehensive way in thermal conversion processes of this type of fuel.

Recently high yield of cycloalkanes originates from selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil under mild conditions, which still encounters the great challenges. Herein, mordenite-supported ruthenium bifunctional catalyst (Ru3%/M) was prepared by using the deposition-precipitation (DP) method for the HDO reaction of the petroleum ether-extractable portions (PEEP) from alkali catalytic ethanolysis of lignin (CEOL). Ru3%/M catalyst was characterized systematically by XRD, XPS, FTIRS, NH3-TPD, N-2-adsorption, SEM, and TEM, indicating that it had the moderate acid sites and uniform Ru nanoparticles dispersion. The synthesized catalyst was further tested for the HDO per-formance of diphenyl ether, oxybis(methylene)dibenzene, and anisole, respectively. Results showed that three lignin model compounds can be converted to high yield of cycloalkanes under 160 degrees C and 3 MPa H-2 in n-hexane. This catalyst showed the high catalytic activity for diphenyl ether HDO reaction, the con -version decreased slightly to 87.6% after five recycle times. Furthermore, catalyst feed mass was the key factor for HDO reaction of raw PEEP from CEOL, promoting the HDO reaction process to produce high yield of cycloalkanes. Interestingly, the mass ratio between catalyst feed and raw PEEP was 1, thus 74.36% relative content (RC) of cycloalkanes can be obtained. The crude electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has caused severe contamination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the local environment, begging the question of whether wildlife like birds living at e-waste sites are suffering from adverse effects. We examined several oxidative status markers and their relationships with hepatic concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) that inhabit an e-waste site in South China. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Sigma PCBs (19100 ng/g) and Sigma PBDEs (507 ng/g) in kingfishers from e-waste site were several orders of magnitude higher than those in the species from a reference site. Correspondingly, hepatic concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in kingfishers from the e-waste site were significantly higher than those detected in the reference population, suggesting oxidative distress in the birds breeding at the e-waste site. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the liver from the exposed group were significantly lower compared with the reference group, while the opposite trend was observed for glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Significantly positive correlations were observed between PCB or PBDE concentrations and the levels of MDA and ROS; while negative correlations were found for enzymatic activities of SOD and CAT. Overall, our results may suggest a potential linkage between exposure to e-waste-derived pollutants and elevated oxidative stress, thereby indicating a potential oxidative stress-related health effects in common kingfisher breeding at the e-waste site.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) triggered by ultrasound (US) has attracted increasing attention owing to its abilities to overcome critical limitations including low tissue-penetration depth and phototoxicity in photodynamic therapy. Herein, the design of a new type of sonosensitizer is revealed, namely, ultrasmall oxygen-deficient bimetallic oxide MnWOX nanoparticles, for multimodal imaging-guided enhanced SDT against cancer. As-made MnWOX nanoparticles with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) modification show high physiological stability and biocompatibility. Interestingly, such MnWOX-PEG nanoparticles exhibit highly efficient US-triggered production of O-1(2) and center dot OH, higher than that of previously reported sonosensitizers (e.g., protoporphyrin IX and titanium dioxide), because the oxygen-deficient structure of MnWOX serves as an electron trap site to prevent electron-hole recombination. The glutathione depletion capability of MnWOX-PEG can also further favor SDT-triggered cancer cell killing. With efficient tumor homing as illustrated by computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, MnWOX-PEG enables effective destruction of mouse tumors under US stimulation. After accomplishing its therapeutic functions, MnWOX-PEG can be metabolized by the mouse body without any long-term toxicity. Herein, a new type of sono-sensitizing agent with high SDT efficacy, multimodal imaging functions, and rapid clearance is presented, an agent which is promising for noninvasive SDT cancer treatment.
