Self-assembly of nanoparticles into ordered patterns is a novel approach to build up new consolidated materials with desired collective physical properties. Herein, nanoparticle assemblies of composition-modulated bimagnetic nanoparticles have been produced via slow evaporation of their colloidal suspension in the absence or presence of magnetic fields. The assemblies obtained in the presence of the magnetic fields exhibit oriented nanoparticle chains in face-centered cubic superlattice structures, compared with the hexagonal closed-packed superlattice obtained without the magnetic field. The oriented structure has an alignment of the easy magnetization axis along the chains. This alignment leads to enhanced intra-superlattice interactions. As a result, the field-induced assembly displays collective magnetic properties with significantly enhanced magnetic anisotropy, remanent magnetization and coercivity. It is also found that the bimagnetic FeCo/CoFe2O4 core/shell nanostructure enhances the intra-particle interaction and thus is beneficial for the growth of oriented assembly of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the collective magnetic behavior is evidenced by the observation of a superferromagnetic-like magnetization relaxation in the ac-susceptibility curves.

The dependence of polymer film transparency on different kinds of planar orientations of nanoporous-crystalline (NC) phases of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) is described. The two polymers exhibit opposite behavior: film transparency is improved for sPS and PPO by orientations of the chain axes of the NC phases being parallel (c(parallel to)) and perpendicular (c(perpendicular to)) to the film plane, respectively. This behavior can be rationalized by the negative and positive birefringence of sPS and PPO chains, respectively. In fact, to maximize transparency, the refractive index of the NC phase along the perpendicular to the film plane has to be increased to come closer to that of the corresponding amorphous phase. This can be pursued by controlling the orientation of the NC phases and hence of the associated refractive index ellipsoids.

Extensive characterizations, mainly by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques, are reported for co-crystalline (CC) poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)-oxide (PPO) films with many different low-molecular-mass guest molecules. These characterizations are also reported for the corresponding nanoporous crystalline (NC) phases, as obtained by suitable guest-removal procedures. Two well-separated NC forms, hereafter named alpha and beta, are obtained by guest removal from two well-separated groups of CC forms. alpha and beta NC forms can be easily recognized by reflections in WAXD patterns as well as by suitable FTIR crystalline peaks. Density and degree of crystallinity measurements confirm that both NC phases exhibit a density definitely smaller than for the amorphous phase (rho(am) = 1.04 g/cm(3) rho(beta) = 0.95 g/cm(3) > rho(alpha) = 0.93 g/cm(3)). Density functional theory calculations combined with geometrical analysis on PPO model systems indicate conformations suitable to fit the observed chain periodicities of the two crystalline forms (c = 5.28 and 5.47 angstrom, for alpha and beta NC forms, respectively).

In the temperature range of 703-763 K, the thermal stability of 4-tert-butyl diphenyl oxide (4-TBDPO) has been studied, the components of the thermolysis reaction mass have been identified, a kinetic model of the process has been proposed, and the rate constants and parameters of the Arrhenius equation for all reactions under consideration have been calculated. The predominant role of isomerization transformations of 4-TBDPO has been found. A mechanism for the radical isomerization of the tert-butyl substituent has been proposed.

The controllable synthesis of molybdenum carbides with different phases by a facile and environmentally friendly method and understanding their structure-performance relationship are still challenges. In this work, lamellar beta-Mo2C and alpha-MoC1-x have been synthesized by a self-assembly synthetic route using Mo-dopamine as single source without any template and additive at a relatively low carburization temperature. The introduction of H-2 fortifies the reducibility of the system and accelerates the carburization process and phase transformation. The structure-performance relationship was also investigated in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of diphenyl ether. Thereinto, beta-Mo2C exhibits 99.9% conversion and 95.2% selectivity to benzene, while alpha-MoC1-x shows only 74.6% conversion with 84.8% selectivity to benzene and 12.7% to O-containing product phenol at the same conditions. The superior HDO performance of beta-Mo2C can be attributed to the more active sites in beta-Mo2C than alpha-MoC1-x. beta-Mo2C with stronger thermostability exhibits long-term stability during the HDO process. The results show that beta-Mo2C is a promising catalyst for lignin valorization.

Commonly used methods to assess crystallinity, micro-/mesoporosity, Bronsted acid site density and distribution (in micro- vs. mesopores), and catalytic activity suggest nearly invariant structure and function for aluminosilicate zeolite MFI two-dimensional nanosheets before and after superheated steam treatment. Yet, pronounced reaction rate decrease for benzyl alcohol alkylation with mesitylene, a reaction that cannot take place in the zeolite micropores, is observed. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal pronounced changes in nanosheet thickness, aspect ratio and roughness indicating that nanosheet coarsening and the associated changes in the external (mesoporous) surface structure are responsible for the changes in the external surface catalytic activity. Superheated steam treatment of hierarchical zeolites can be used to alter nanosheet morphology and regulate external surface catalytic activity while preserving micro- and mesoporosity, and micropore reaction rates.

Because of the intrinsic advantages, Suzuki coupling reactions have been one of the most popular coupling reactions in organic synthesis, however developing a high-performance heterogeneous catalyst for Suzuki coupling reactions in aqueous media at low temperature (e.g. room temperature) is still a challenge. Herein, a heterogeneous catalyst with coordinated Pd as active site and a designed conjugated phenanthroline based porous polymer (CPP) as support was fabricated. Systematically investigation on CPP support by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that the derived CPP catalyst support owns a porous structure, moderately good surface area (141 m(2)/g) and an excellent thermal stability. As a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of biphenyl derivatives via Suzuki coupling, Pd/CPP achieves an excellent catalytic performance and recycling ability towards Suzuki reaction of various reactants at room temperature in ethanol-water medium.

Here, we report the first example of the utilization of p-nitro-tetradecyloxy-calix[4]arene (C4A-NO2) as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated C4A-NO2 column exhibited a high column efficiency of 3815 plates per m and moderate polarity. The C4A-NO2 column was investigated for its separation performance and retention behaviours by utilizing a wide variety of isomer mixtures, covering alkylated benzenes and naphthalenes, alkenes, furans, alcohols, benzaldehydes, phenols and halogenated anilines. Importantly, the C4A-NO2 column exhibited high resolving capability for both aliphatic and aromatic isomers. Particularly, it displayed advantageous resolving capability over the commercial DB-17 column for halogenated aniline isomers. This work provides a good reference for designing calixarene derivatives as GC stationary phases, which is important for developing a family of stationary phases with specific selectivity.
