Benzyl alcohol is a versatile reaction medium for the synthesis of different types of nanoparticles. Its ability to act as an oxygen source gave access to metal oxide nanoparticles, while its reducing properties can be harnessed for the preparation of metals. Here we report the synthesis of Pd and PdCu nanoparticles in benzyl alcohol supplemented by a detailed mechanistic study for both systems. To elucidate the chemical formation mechanism of the Pd nanoparticles, we performed in situ attenuated total reflection ultraviolet-visible (ATR-UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), providing information on the organic as well as on the inorganic side of the reaction. Potential gaseous products were analyzed by in situ gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). We observed the formation of benzaldehyde, toluene, and dibenzyl ether as the three main organic products. The formation of the PdCu alloy nanoparticles was studied by ex situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). A time-resolved study of the synthesis at 100 degrees C indicated that initially three types of particles formed, composed of an alloy with high Pd content, an alloy with high content of copper, and palladium particles, and only later in the reaction course they transformed into an alloy with a Pd-to-Cu ratio close to 1. Today, using new energy storage systems for peak shaving and load leveling with the approach of maximizing the efficiency of energy systems is inevitable. In the present study, a cogeneration integrated structure of power and cooling using liquefied natural gas regasification and solar collectors is developed and analyzed. In this regard, the purposes can be achieved by producing liquid air at an off-peak time and storing it as a cryogenic energy storage system and recovering it on-peak time. This new integrated structure generates 11.66 MW power and 4.502 MW cooling at the on-peak time. A Kalina-based combined cooling and power cycle and a gas turbine power generation unit are used to generate power from liquid air. Phase change material is used to store the heat from the compressed air entering the liquefaction stage (at the off-peak time) and recovering it at the on-peak time as the heat source of the Kalina cycle. Also, the solar parabolic trough collector provided with Zahedan climatic conditions the heat required for the direct expansion section. The electrical storage, round-trip, energy storage, and exergy efficiencies of the proposed energy storage system are 57.62%, 45.44%, 79.87%, and 40.17%, respectively. The most exergy destruction belongs to the heat exchangers section, which accounts for 50.85% of the total exergy destruction. One of the important results of the parametric study is the increase of round-trip and electrical storage efficiencies up to 47.59% and 61.60%, respectively, by minimizing the pressure of the inlet air to the liquefaction stage while maximizing the pressure of the liquid air inlet to the power generation stage.

Lignin is constructed from methoxylated phenylpropanoid with plenty of hydroxys and methoxys. Its conversion to valuable products is extremely attractive but especially challenging without additional hydrogen sources. Herein we report a hydrogen-free production of 4-alkylphenols directly from native lignin via self-reforming-driven depolymerization and hydrogenolysis over Pt/NiAl2O4. This is the first example of acquiring 4-alkylphenols from native lignin. Using this strategy, high yields of 4-alkylphenols, 17.3 wt %, were obtained from birch lignin. Reaction pathway and mechanism studies revealed that this strategy initiates from the reforming of aliphatic hydroxys, followed by the cleavage of C-O linkages, and ends via demethoxylation over Pt/NiAl2O4. Moreover, the subsequent aqueous phase reforming of the as-formed methanol accelerates the whole process. This strategy realizes the one-pot production of 4-alkylphenols from lignin by fully utilizing the structural hydrogen in lignin and H2O, providing a low-cost and safe method of lignin valorization.

Purpose: To describe factors (demographics and clinical characteristics) that predict patients who are at an increased risk of adverse events or unplanned return visits to a health-care facility following discharge direct to home (DDH) from intensive care units (ICUs). Methods: Prospective cohort study of all adult patients who survived their stay in our medical-surgical-trauma ICU between February 2016 and 2017 and were discharged directly home. Patients were followed for 8 weeks postdischarge. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with adverse events or unplanned return visits to a health-care facility following DDH from ICU. Results: A total of 129 DDH patients were enrolled and completed the 8-week follow-up. We identified 39 unplanned return visits (URVs). There was 0% mortality at 8 weeks postdischarge. Eight potential predictors of hospital URVs (P< .2) were identified in the univariable analysis: prior substance abuse (odds ratio [OR] of URV of 2.50 [95% confidence interval: 1.08-5.80], hepatitis (OR: 6.92 [1.68-28.48]), sepsis (OR: 11.03 [1.19-102.29]), admission nine equivalents of nursing manpower score (NEMS) <24 (OR: 2.28 [1.03-5.04], no fixed address (OR: 22.9 [1.2-437.3]), ICU length of stay (LOS) <2 days (OR: 2.95 [1.28-6.78]), home discharge within London, Ontario (OR: 2.44 [1.00-5.92]), and left against medical advice (AMA; OR: 6.06 [2.04-17.98]). Analyzing of tumor markers has become an important means for cancer diagnosis and prevention. In this study, a novel solid phase extraction based on porous magnetic cyclodextrin polymer (MA-CD) was developed and used for detection of trace small molecule gastric tumor markers in urine samples. The adsorption properties of the magnetic cyclodextrin polymer were tested. Through experiments of the solid phase extraction (SPE) at the different condition, the optimal condition was selected to test the two tumor markers by High-performance liquid chromatography -Diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). The analytical performance of the method showed good accuracy (88.82%-104.34%) and precision (< 3.55%), appropriated detection limits (1.016 and 5.714 mu g L-1) and linear ranges (0.6-24.0 mu g L-1) with convenient determination coefficients (> 0.9994). The results demonstrated that the developed approach is efficient, low-cost for gastric tumor markers detection.

While infants are developing, they are easily affected by toxic chemicals existing in their environments, such as semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs): phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organophosphate esters (OPEs). However, the specific living environment of infants, including increased plastic products and foam floor mats, may increase the presence of these chemicals, In this study, 68 air, dust, and window film samples were collected from homes, with 3- to 6-month-old infant occupants, to analyze phthalates, PAHs, PBDEs, and OPEs. High detection rates and concentrations suggest that these SVOCs are widespread in infant environments and are associated with cooking methods, smoking habits, the period of time after decoration, and room floors. The partitioning behavior of SVOCs indicates that the logarithms of the dust/gas-phase air partition coefficient (logK(D)) and the window film/gas-phase air partition coefficient (logK(F)) in homes are not at an equilibrium state when the logarithm of the octanol/air partition coefficient (logK(OA)) is less than 8 or greater than 11, Considering the 3 exposure routes, ingestion and dermal absorption have become the main routes of infant exposure to phthalates and OPEs, and ingestion and inhalation have become the dominant routes of exposure to PAHs and PBDEs. The dependence of the selective oxidation catalytic activity of Au-Pd supported on titanate nanotubes on the catalyst preparation method has been investigated. The most active Au-Pd/Ti-NT catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol is shown to be that prepared using colloidal synthesis and immobilization with PVA as a stabilizer, which has markedly superior catalytic activity compared to catalysts prepared by deposition-precipitation, adsorption, and dry impregnation methods. Au-Pd NPs stabilized by graphene oxide sheets and immobilized on Ti-NT has also been studied and while not optimum shows promising catalytic activity. The superior catalytic activity of the catalysts prepared by colloidal synthesis is attributed to the high metal dispersion on the external surfaces of Ti-NT, the narrow particle size distribution, and the high degree of Au-Pd alloying. This work also demonstrates that in the adsorption method of preparation using HAuCl4.3H(2)O and PdCl2 precursors, the uptake of Pd ions in solution by Ti-NT is proportional to the sodium content in Ti-NT, which implies that Na is involved in an ion-exchange reaction with Pd ions.

A green, cost-effective and facile steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) strategy was developed to synthesize core-shell-structured zeolite composites with different frameworks between the core and shell. Chemical incompatibility from different structures has been circumvented by dip-coating Silicalite-1 seeds and an in situ transformation process. Beta@Silicalite-1 zeolites with a nanoscale polycrystal Silicalite-1 shell wrapped around the monocrystal Beta core was synthesized. The crystallization process and synthetic parameters, such as the composition of the core, crystallization temperature and gel composition of the seed solution, were investigated. The results revealed the importance of stability of the core and the crystallization rate of the Silicalite-1 shell. Interestingly, a trace amount of aluminum in the core zeolite could help resist corrosion during crystallization. Further investigation on alkylation and etherification reactions over Beta@Silicalite-1 demonstrated the advantage in selectivity control toward self-etherification versus alkylation.

The challenge of coating organic photovoltaics (OPV) from green solvents is to achieve the required nanostructured interpenetrating network of donor and acceptor domains based on a rational choice of solvent approach as opposed to the usual trial-and-error methods. We demonstrate here that we can achieve a bicontinuous interpenetrating network with nanoscale phase separation for the chosen donor-acceptor material system poly[2,3-bis-(3-octyloxyphenyl)quinoxaline-5,8-diyl-alt-thiophene-2,5-diyl]:phenyl-C-61 butyric acid methyl ester (TQ1:PC61BM) when processing from green solvent ink formulations. This structure is achieved by first calculating the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP) of the donor and acceptor materials, followed by careful choice of solvents with selective relative solubilities for the two materials based on the desired order of precipitation necessary for forming a nanostructured interdigitated network morphology. We found that the relative distances in Hansen space (R-a) between TQ1 and the primary solvent, on the one hand, and PC61BM and the primary solvent, on the other hand, could be correlated to the donor-acceptor morphology for the formulations based on the solvents d-limonene, anisole, and 2-methyl anisole, as well as the halogenated reference solvent o-dichlorobenzene. This nanostructured blend film morphology was characterised with scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the film surface composition was analysed by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Hansen solubility theory, based on solution thermodynamics, has been used and we propose an HSP-based method that is a general platform for the rational design of ink formulations for solution-based organic electronics, in particular facilitating the green solvent transition of organic photovoltaics. Our results show that the bulk heterojunction morphology for a donor-acceptor system processed from customised solvent mixtures can be predicted by the HSP-based method with good reliability.

The catalytic regioselective C-H silylation of a wide range of alkoxy-substituted benzene derivatives with primary hydrosilane was achieved by the use of scorpionate-supported calcium benzyl complex [(Tp(Ad,iPr))Ca(p-CH2C6H4Me)(THP)] (1) (Tp(Ad,iPr) = hydrotris(3-adamantyl-5-isopropylpyrazolyl)borate, THP = tetrahydropyran) as the precatalyst. This protocol offers an atom-efficient and straightforward method for the synthesis of a variety of silyl-substituted aromatic ether derivatives without a hydrogen acceptor and free of transition metal. Calcium anisyl complexes [(Tp(Ad,iPr))Ca(o-MeO-m-Br-C6H3)] (5) and [(Tp(Ad,iPr))Ca(o-Me-OCH2C6H4)] (6), proposed as the catalytic reaction intermediates, were isolated and structurally characterized.
