An efficient bifunctional NbOPO4 supported Ru catalyst (Ru-NbOPO4) was applied to the hydrodeoxygenation of aromatic ethers and phenols and the upgrading of bio-oil. Characterization results revealed that the Ru-NbOPO4 catalyst possessed strong acidity, including Lewis and Bronsted acids. The Lewis acid sites originated from the Nb-O bonding structures, including slightly distorted octahedral NbO6, regular tetrahedral NbO4 and highly distorted octahedral NbO6. In combination with the strong acidity of the Nb-O species and excellent hydrogenation activity of the metallic Ru, the bifunctional Ru-NbOPO4 catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic activity in the hydrodeoxygenation of aromatic ethers and phenols with different structures, and even real bio-oil to alkanes. The hydrocarbon yield after real bio-oil upgradation was up to 88.2 %. Carbon deposition and enlargement of the Ru nanoparticles resulted in slight deactivation of the catalyst. The catalytic activity could be mostly recovered after being calcined and reduced.

Lignin is constructed from methoxylated phenylpropanoid with plenty of hydroxys and methoxys. Its conversion to valuable products is extremely attractive but especially challenging without additional hydrogen sources. Herein we report a hydrogen-free production of 4-alkylphenols directly from native lignin via self-reforming-driven depolymerization and hydrogenolysis over Pt/NiAl2O4. This is the first example of acquiring 4-alkylphenols from native lignin. Using this strategy, high yields of 4-alkylphenols, 17.3 wt %, were obtained from birch lignin. Reaction pathway and mechanism studies revealed that this strategy initiates from the reforming of aliphatic hydroxys, followed by the cleavage of C-O linkages, and ends via demethoxylation over Pt/NiAl2O4. Moreover, the subsequent aqueous phase reforming of the as-formed methanol accelerates the whole process. This strategy realizes the one-pot production of 4-alkylphenols from lignin by fully utilizing the structural hydrogen in lignin and H2O, providing a low-cost and safe method of lignin valorization.

The liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are promising materials for hydrogen storage. The standard molar enthalpies of formation, Delta H-f(m)o (liq/cr) of diphenyl ether substituted with methyl, methoxy, and hydroxyl substituents were measured by the high-precision combustion calorimetry. Enthalpies of vaporization/sublimation Delta(g)(l,cr) H-o(m) (298.15 K) of these compounds were obtained by the transpiration method. Enthalpies of fusion of 2- and 4-hydroxy-diphenyl ether were measured by differential scanning calorimeter. Gas-phase enthalpies of formation Delta H-f(o)m (g, 298.15 K) of substituted diphenyl ethers calculated by the G4 method were in an excellent agreement with the experimental results. Enthalpies of the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions of diphenyl ether derivatives were estimated and compared with the data available for other potential LOHC. A set of thermodynamic properties of diphenyl ether derivatives of benchmark quality was recommended for thermochemical calculations. Equilibrium temperatures of hydrogenation/dehydrogenation processes were calculated and compared with those of benzene derivatives. Because of their high hydrogen storage capacity, as well as very low volatility, these compounds could be considered as seminal candidates for LOHC.

In this work, 1,4-diphenyltriphenylene-grafted (14.2%) polysiloxane (DPTP) was successfully synthesized and statically coated on capillary columns as a stationary phase for gas chromatography. The DPTP columns exhibited excellent efficiencies of 3646 plates m(-1) for a 30 m column and 3125 plates m(-1) for a 10 m column, as evidenced by naphthalene measurements at 120 degrees C, which demonstrated the good film-forming ability of DPTP. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the weight of DPTP is reduced by 2% at 380 degrees C. Separation of the polyethylene pyrolysis product indicated that the maximum allowable operating temperature of the DPTP column is 360 degrees C. The moderate polarity of the DPTP column was investigated in terms of McReynolds constants. The DPTP column was utilized to separate analytes, including aromatic isomers, fatty acid esters, ethers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds, on the basis of the column’s strong pi-pi stacking, dipole-induced dipole, and dispersion interactions with solutes. In general, the DPTP column offers great potential as a novel stationary phase for separating various analytes due to its special structure and remarkable separation performance.

Magnesium-stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (Mg-ACC), amorphous magnesium calcium silicate hydrate (MCSH), and hydroxyapatite (HAp) are prepared by a precipitation method. By cold-pressing these particles, it is possible to produce porous bulk discs with a narrow pore size distribution. These porous inorganic discs (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp) are investigated as stationary phases to study the chromatographic behavior and adsorption ability of rhodamine B, methylene blue, and ribonuclease. The adsorption affinities of different biomolecules can be easily observed and evaluated through this method. Furthermore, by infiltrating fabricated opaque porous discs with benzyl ether, which has a similar refractive index as the used inorganic particles (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp), their optical properties significantly change and the discs become translucent. Moreover, by infiltrating the MCSH discs with a light-curing polymer, translucent composites with good surface hardness are fabricated. By doping particles with ions such as Ni2+, Co2+ , Fe3+, and Eu3+, the color and UV-visible spectrum of the bulk discs can be adjusted. Typically, by using iron-doped MCSH particles as the inorganic matrix, nanocomposites, which show a steep UV-absorption edge at 400 nm, are fabricated. Our work provides a simple and economical method to evaluate the affinity of biomolecules to inorganic materials and a novel way to fabricate translucent hard composite materials. The fabricated nanocomposite discs show a great UV shielding effect and superior surface hardness compared to polymethyl methacrylate and commercial sunglasses, suggesting their potential as new sunglass materials.

As a fundamental type of carbonylation reaction, the alkoxy- and hydroxy-carbonylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons constitutes one of the most important industrial applications of homogeneous catalysis. However, owing to the difficulties in controlling multi-selectivities for asymmetric hydrocarbonylation of alkenes, this reaction is typically limited to vinylarenes and analogues. In this work, a highly efficient asymmetric alkoxy- and hydroxy-carbonylation of beta-carbonyl functionalized alkenes was developed, providing practical and easy access to various densely functionalized chiral molecules with high optical purity from broadly available alkenes, CO, and nucleophiles (>90 examples, 84-99 % ee). This protocol features mild reaction conditions and a broad substrate scope, and the products can be readily transformed into a diverse array of chiral heterocycles. Control experiments revealed the key role of the beta-carbonyl group in determining the enantioselectivity and promoting the activity, which facilitates chiral induction by coordination to the transition metal as rationalized by DFT calculations. The strategy of utilizing an innate functional group as the directing group on the alkene substrate might find further applications in catalytic asymmetric hydrocarbonylation reactions.

This study reports the development of a continuous flow process enabling the synthesis of very small iron oxide nanoparticles (VSION) intended for T-1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The influence of parameters, such as the concentration/nature of surfactants, temperature, pressure and the residence time on the thermal decomposition of iron(III) acetylacetonate in organic media was evaluated. As observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the diameter of the resulting nanoparticle remains constant when modifying the residence time. However, significant differences were observed in the magnetic and relaxometric studies. This continuous flow experimental setup allowed the production of VSION with high flow rates (up to 2 mL.min(-1)), demonstrating the efficacy of such process compared to conventional batch procedure for the scale-up production of VSION.

Electrolyte instability is one of the most challenging impediments to enabling lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries for practical use. The use of physical organic chemistry principles to rationally design new molecular components may enable the discovery of electrolytes with stability profiles that cannot be achieved with existing formulations. Here, we report on the development of sulfamide- and sulfonamide-based small molecules that are liquids at room temperature, capable of dissolving reasonably high concentration of Li salts (e.g., lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide [LiTFSI]), and exceptionally stable under the harsh chemical and electrochemical conditions of aprotic Li-O-2 batteries. In particular, N,N-dimethyl-trifluoromethanesulfonamide was found to be highly resistant to chemical degradation by peroxide and superoxide, stable against electrochemical oxidation up to 4.5 V-Li, and stable for >90 cycles in a Li-O-2 cell when cycled at <4.2 V-Li. Composite worm-like micelles (CWMs) that encapsulate a large number of superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles (SMNPs) within the core while still having a small width should have a high magnetic resonance sensitivity and simultaneously a desirable circulation behaviour in biological systems. However, the preparation of such CWMs is still a challenge. Herein we report the fabrication of CWMsviatwo-stage self-assembly of SMNPs guided by a block copolymer and DNA, respectively. First, poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) co-assembled with SMNPs to form spherical composite micelles, guiding the clustering of multiple SMNPs within the core of the micelles. Then, at the second stage, DNA co-assembled with and guided the linear aggregation and fusion of the micelles, resulting in the CWM encapsulating a large number of SMNPs in the linear core. As a proof of concept, CWMs with aT(2)relaxivity as high as 704 mM(-1)s(-1)and a low MRI detection limit of 2.2 mu g mL(-1)(similar to 0.02 nM CWMs) were prepared; it is significant that theT(2)relaxivity of the SMNPs assembled in the CWMs is around 20 times that of the same SMNPs in the same amount but individually dispersed in the suspension. Additionally, although heavily loaded with SMNPs, the CWMs have a width as small as 20.5 nm and a core-shell structure with PEG as the shell. These features should make the CWMs very promising in their use as ultra-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging probes.

The vesicular glutamate transporter (VGLUT) facilitates the uptake of glutamate (Glu) into neuronal vesicles. VGLUT has not yet been fully characterized pharmacologically but a body of work established that certain azo-dyes bearing two Glu isosteres via a linker were potent inhibitors. However, the distance between the isostere groups that convey potent inhibition has not been delineated. This report describes the synthesis and pharmacologic assessment of Congo Red analogs that contain one or two glutamate isostere or mimic groups; the latter varied in the interatomic distance and spacer properties to probe strategic binding interactions within VGLUT. The more potent inhibitors had two glutamate isosteres symmetrically linked to a central aromatic group and showed IC50 values similar to 0.3-2.0 mu M at VGLUT. These compounds contained phenyl, diphenyl ether (PhOPh) or 1,2-diphenylethane as the linker connecting 4-aminonaphthalene sulfonic acid groups. A homology model for VGLUT2 using d-galactonate transporter (DgoT) to dock and identify R88, H199 and F219 as key protein interactions with Trypan Blue, Congo Red and selected potent analogs prepared and tested in this report.
