A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

Hepatic cancer is a serious disease with high morbidity and mortality. Theranostic agents with effective diagnostic and therapeutic capability are highly needed for the treatment of hepatic cancer. Herein, we aimed to develop a novel mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA)-based theranostic agent for T1/T2 dual magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided cancer chemo-photothermal therapy. Superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-loaded MPDA NPs (MPDA@SPIO) was firstly prepared, followed by modifying with a targeted molecule of sialic acid (SA) and chelating with Fe3+ (SA-MPDA@SPIO/Fe3+ NPs). After that, doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded SA-MPDA@SPIO/Fe3+ NPs (SA-MPDA@SPIO/DOX/Fe3+) was prepared for tumor theranostics. The prepared SAPEG-MPDA@SPIO/ Fe3+ NPs were water-dispersible and biocompatible as evidenced by MTT assay. In vitro photothermal and relaxivity property suggested that the novel theranostic agent possessed excellent photothermal conversion capability and photostability, with relaxivity of being r(1) = 4.29 mM(-1)s(-1) and r(2) = 105.53 mM(-1)s(-1), respectively. SAPEG-MPDA@SPIO/Fe3+ NPs could effectively encapsulate the DOX, showing dual pH- and thermal-triggered drug release behavior. In vitro and in vivo studies revealed that SA-MPDA@SPIO/DOX/Fe3+ NPs could effectively target to the hepatic tumor tissue, which was possibly due to the specific interaction between SA and the overexpressed E-selectin. This behavior also endowed SA-MPDA@SPIO/DOX/Fe3+ NPs with a more precise T1-T2 dual mode contrast imaging effect than the one without SA modification. In addition, SAPEG-MPDA@SPIO/DOX/Fe3+ NPs displayed a superior therapeutic effect, which was due to its active targeting ability and combined effects of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy. These results demonstrated that SAPEG-MPDA@SPIO/DOX/Fe3+ NPs is an effective targeted nanoplatform for tumor theranostics, having potential value in the effective treatment of hepatic cancer.

The reactivity of azomethines based on trifluoroacetaldehyde hydrate in the Castagnoli-Cushman reaction (CCR) was researched. The impact of the nature of anhydrides explored on the reaction route was determined. The preparative procedures for the synthesis of N-substituted (3R*,4R*)-1-oxo-3-(trifluoromethyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-4-carboxylic and (1R*,2R*)-4-oxo-2-(trifluoromethyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[d]azepine-1-carboxylic acids in gram scales were elaborated. It was shown that the trifluoromethyl group remarkably decreased the reactivity of azomethines in CCR. The mechanism for the formation of different products depending on the anhydride’s nature was proposed.

The Wayne State University (WSU) experimental descriptor database is utilized to bench mark the current capability of the solvation parameter model for use as a quantitative structure-retention relationship tool for estimating retention in gas and reversed-phase liquid chromatography. The prediction error for the retention factors of varied compounds on six open-tubular columns for gas chromatography (Rtx-5 SIL MS, DB-35 ms, RtxCLPesticides, HP-88, HP-INNOWAX and SLB-IL76) and three packed columns for reversed phase liquid chromatography (SunFire C-18 , XBridge Shield RP18, and XBridge Phenyl) is used to establish expectations related to current practices. Each column data set was divided into a training set for calibration and a test set for validation employing a roughly 1 to 2 split, such that each test set contained about 40 to 80 varied compounds. The average absolute error for the prediction of retention factors by gas chromatography varied from about 0.1 to 0.4 on the retention factor scale with the larger error typical of stationary phases ranked as the most polar (or cohesive). For reversed-phase liquid chromatography the average error for the prediction of retention factors was 0.3 to 0.5 and generally larger than for gas chromatography. Statistical filters where utilized to identify a group of polycyclic aromatic compounds without hydrogen-bonding functional groups with a larger prediction error on the SunFire C-18 column than for other compounds of smaller size, flexible structure or containing hydrogen-bonding functional groups. The heterogeneity of the retention mechanism is speculated to be the main contribution to the prediction error for both gas and liquid chromatography using the solvation parameter model. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) triggered by ultrasound (US) has attracted increasing attention owing to its abilities to overcome critical limitations including low tissue-penetration depth and phototoxicity in photodynamic therapy. Herein, the design of a new type of sonosensitizer is revealed, namely, ultrasmall oxygen-deficient bimetallic oxide MnWOX nanoparticles, for multimodal imaging-guided enhanced SDT against cancer. As-made MnWOX nanoparticles with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) modification show high physiological stability and biocompatibility. Interestingly, such MnWOX-PEG nanoparticles exhibit highly efficient US-triggered production of O-1(2) and center dot OH, higher than that of previously reported sonosensitizers (e.g., protoporphyrin IX and titanium dioxide), because the oxygen-deficient structure of MnWOX serves as an electron trap site to prevent electron-hole recombination. The glutathione depletion capability of MnWOX-PEG can also further favor SDT-triggered cancer cell killing. With efficient tumor homing as illustrated by computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, MnWOX-PEG enables effective destruction of mouse tumors under US stimulation. After accomplishing its therapeutic functions, MnWOX-PEG can be metabolized by the mouse body without any long-term toxicity. Herein, a new type of sono-sensitizing agent with high SDT efficacy, multimodal imaging functions, and rapid clearance is presented, an agent which is promising for noninvasive SDT cancer treatment.

A quinoxaline-based porous organic polymer (Q-POP) as a mesoporous organic copolymer was developed as a new platform for the immobilization of CuNPs and copper nanocrystals. The prepared materials were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, ICP, TGA, SEM, HR-TEM, EDX, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The obtained catalyst presented extraordinary catalytic activity towards Ullmann C-O coupling reactions with high surface area, hierarchical porosity, and excellent thermal and chemical stability. Due to its high porosity, and synergistic effect of copper nanocrystals incorporated in the polymer composite, the as-synthesized catalyst was successfully utilized for the Ullmann C-O coupling reaction of phenols and different aryl halides to prepare various diaryl ether derivatives. All types of aryl halides (except aryl fluorides) were screened in the Ullmann C-O coupling reaction with phenols to produce diaryl ethers in good to excellent yields (70-97 %), and it was found that aryl iodides have the best results. Besides, due to the strong interactions between CuNPs, N, and O-atoms of quinoxaline moiety existing in the polymeric framework, the copper leaching from the support was not observed. Furthermore, the catalyst was recycled and reused for five consecutive runs without significant activity loss.

Conventional additives like 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) and 1-chloronaphthalene (CN) play an essential role in optimization of blend film morphology of polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, they have halogenated elements in their end groups, which are harmful to the environment and humans, limiting large-scale applications. In this work, a novel non-toxic and non-halogen additive, dibenzyl ether (DE), was introduced into PTB7-Th:PC71BM based PSCs, and the role of the DE additive was systemically investigated. The results showed that DE additive can not only adjust phase separation and optimize the morphology of blend film, but also promote the mobility of hole and electron. The grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) showed that the introduction of DE increased the interface area between PTB7-Th and PC71BM, which can promote exciton dissociation, and achieve better charge transport. Transient photovoltage (TPV) and transient photocurrent (TPC) measurements show that carrier recombination of the additive-containing devices can be effectively inhibited with improved charge transport efficiency of the active layer. Consequently, the devices with DE additive achieve power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.53% and a fill factor (FF) of 70.41%. Our non-toxic and non-halogen additive provides a potential solution for the preparation of environmental-friendly PSCs in the future.

Electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and large electroactive surface areas are the most important factors in determining the performance of various flexible electrodes in energy storage devices. Herein, a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly-induced metal electrodeposition approach is introduced to prepare a variety of highly porous 3D-current collectors with high flexibility, metallic conductivity, and large surface area. In this study, a few metal nanoparticle (NP) layers are LbL-assembled onto insulating paper for the preparation of conductive paper. Subsequent Ni electroplating of the metal NP-coated substrates reduces the sheet resistance from approximate to 10(3) to <0.1 omega sq(-1) while maintaining the porous structure of the pristine paper. Particularly, this approach is completely compatible with commercial electroplating processes, and thus can be directly extended to electroplating applications using a variety of other metals in addition to Ni. After depositing high-energy MnO NPs onto Ni-electroplated papers, the areal capacitance increases from 68 to 811 mF cm(-2) as the mass loading of MnO NPs increases from 0.16 to 4.31 mg cm(-2). An efficient method for the synthesis of chloroesters by the reaction of ethers with acyl chlorides catalyzed by nano-ZnO under solvent-free condition at room temperature was described. The method is compatible with a range of ethers including tricyclic ethers, tetracyclic ethers, pentacyclic ethers and hexacyclic ethers and have afforded the products with moderate to good yields. The ZnO could be reused up to three times and the product yield after three cycles is 87%.

This work deals with the synthesis of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in different solvents and their structural characterization for better understanding the oxygen donor solvent/zirconium precursor/NPs structure relationships. By selecting solvents over their capacity to produce different crystalline states from alkalinized zirconium alkoxide, spherical nanoparticles with a size of about 1.3-3 nm and a narrow size distribution were elaborated using a nonaqueous solvothermal sol-gel route. Conventional X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the average structure and crystallite size of the nanoparticles. Well-crystallized and single-phased nanoparticles with average monoclinic and tetragonal structure were obtained with benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol, respectively, and a much distorted structure was observed for the synthesis in anisole. The atomic pair distribution functions (PDF) of the samples were also analyzed to access the local structure of the nanoparticles. The PDF of the benzaldehyde-prepared sample is consistent with the monoclinic structure. However, the local structure of nanoparticles synthesized with benzyl alcohol does not fully conform to the tetragonal structure observed by XRD, but exhibits monoclinic-like distortions. Lastly, the anisole-prepared nanoparticles present large structural distortions at the medium range and monoclinic local structural features. The restructuring of this last sample was studied by post-treatments in different solvents and leads to the expression of the tetragonal polymorph. Moreover, it seems that the main structural features are obtained in the early stages of the nanoparticles’ formation.
