Two new compounds, named penisclerotiorin A (1) and diaporthein C (8), and a new natural product, penidepsidone A (4), together with five known compounds (2, 3, 5-7) were isolated from the fungus Penicillium sclerotiorum GZU-XW03-2. Their structures were assigned using spectroscopic methods, quantum chemical calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Penisclerotiorin A (1) that belongs to the highly oxidized diphenyl ether is rare found in natural sources, and it was the sixth example of highly oxidized diphenyl ether analogues in natural sources. Penidepsidone A (4) is a new natural product and no any NMR spectral data were reported to date, in this paper, we firstly used the NMR calculations to confirm the intact structure by comparison of the experimental NMR data. Diaporthein C (8) represents the third example of pimarane diterpenes bearing a double bond at C-8 and C-9. In the bioassays, all of the isolates (1-8) were tested for their anti-inflammatory effects on the production of nitric oxide in lipopolysaccharide-induced microglial cells (RAW 264.7 cells). Compounds 2, 3 and 6 showed potent anti-inflammatory effects than the positive control (indomethacin, IC50, 24.0 mu M) with IC50 values of 11.52, 8.13 and 21.27 mu M, respectively.

Graphene has extensive application in various prospects due to its good stability, high conductivity, and large specific surface area. However, the dispersion of graphene in solvents can significantly affect the preparation of graphene-supported metal nanoparticles through wet chemistry methods. In this work, a density functional theory calculation is carried out to study the interaction between graphene and various solvent molecules. According to the calculation, there is a correlation between the interaction energy (E-a) and the dispersion concentration of graphene in different solvents. In addition, we use methanol, ethanol, or 2-propanol as solvents to prepare graphene-supported palladium nanoparticles. The size of the nanoparticles decreased with stronger interaction between graphene and solvent molecules when using methanol, ethanol, or 2-propanol as solvents. Furthermore, there is a good correlation with the size of the nanoparticles and interaction energies between graphene and solvent molecules, which confirmed that E-a is an effective descriptor for graphene dispersion in solvents. This work provides insightful information to understand the dispersion mechanism of graphene in solvents and preparation of graphene-supported metal nanoparticles through wet chemistry methods.

To achieve high photovoltaic performance of bulk hetero-junction organic solar cells (OSCs), a range of critical factors including absorption profiles, energy level alignment, charge carrier mobility and miscibility of donor and acceptor materials should be carefully considered. For electron-donating materials, the deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level that is beneficial for high open-circuit voltage is much appreciated. However, a new issue in charge transfer emerges when matching such a donor with an acceptor that has a shallower HOMO energy level. More to this point, the chemical strategies used to enhance the absorption coefficient of acceptors may lead to increased molecular crystallinity, and thus result in less controllable phase-separation of photoactive layer. Therefore, to realize balanced photovoltaic parameters, the donor-acceptor combinations should simultaneously address the absorption spectra, energy levels, and film morphologies. Here, we selected two non-fullerene acceptors, namely BTPT-4F and BTPTT-4F, to match with a wide-bandgap polymer donor P2F-EHp consisting of an imide-functionalized benzotriazole moiety, as these materials presented complementary absorption and well-matched energy levels. By delicately optimizing the blend film morphology, we demonstrated an unprecedented power conversion efficiency of over 16% for the device based on P2F-EHp:BTPTT-4F, suggesting the great promise of materials matching toward high-performance OSCs.

An efficient bifunctional NbOPO4 supported Ru catalyst (Ru-NbOPO4) was applied to the hydrodeoxygenation of aromatic ethers and phenols and the upgrading of bio-oil. Characterization results revealed that the Ru-NbOPO4 catalyst possessed strong acidity, including Lewis and Bronsted acids. The Lewis acid sites originated from the Nb-O bonding structures, including slightly distorted octahedral NbO6, regular tetrahedral NbO4 and highly distorted octahedral NbO6. In combination with the strong acidity of the Nb-O species and excellent hydrogenation activity of the metallic Ru, the bifunctional Ru-NbOPO4 catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic activity in the hydrodeoxygenation of aromatic ethers and phenols with different structures, and even real bio-oil to alkanes. The hydrocarbon yield after real bio-oil upgradation was up to 88.2 %. Carbon deposition and enlargement of the Ru nanoparticles resulted in slight deactivation of the catalyst. The catalytic activity could be mostly recovered after being calcined and reduced.

Environmental exposure to organohalogenated contaminants (OHCs), even at low concentrations, may cause detrimental effects on the development and health of wild birds. The present study investigated if environmental exposure to OHCs may influence the variation of multiple physiological parameters in Norwegian white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) nestlings. Plasma and feather samples were obtained from 70 nestlings at two archipelagos in Norway in 2015 and 2016. The selected physiological parameters were plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones (thyroxine, T4 and triiodothyronine, T3), plasma proteins (prealbumin, albumin, alpha(1)-, alpha(2)-, beta-and gamma-globulins) and selected blood clinical chemical parameters (BCCPs) associated with liver and kidney functioning. Feather concentrations of corticosterone (CORTf) were also included to investigate the overall stress level of the nestlings. Concentrations of all studied physiological parameters were within the ranges of those found in other species of free-living birds of prey nestlings and indicated that the white-tailed eagle nestlings were in good health. Our statistical models indicated that perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and legacy OHCs, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorinated pesticides and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, influenced only a minor fraction of the variation of plasma thyroid hormones, prealbumin and CORTf (5-15%), and partly explained the selected BCCPs (< 26%). Most of the variation in each studied physiological parameter was explained by variation between nests, which is most likely due to natural physiological variation of nestlings in these nests. This indicates the importance of accounting for between nest variation in future studies. In the present nestlings, OHC concentrations were relatively low and seem to have played a secondary role compared to natural variation concerning the variation of physiological parameters. However, our study also indicates a potential for OHC-induced effects on thyroid hormones, CORTf, prealbumin and BCCPs, which could be of concern in birds exposed to higher OHC concentrations than the present white-tailed eagle nestlings. A broad spectrum of applications of magnetic nanoparticles leads to the need for the precise tuning of their magnetic properties. In this study, a series of magnetite and zinc-ferrite nanoparticles were successfully prepared by modified high-temperature synthesis in a controlled gas atmosphere. Nanoparticles with different zinc to iron ratios and pure Fe3O4 were obtained. The structure of the nanoparticles was studied by transmission electron microscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy. These revealed the single domain character of the nanoparticles and the influence of the synthesis temperature and zinc to iron ratio on their shape and size. Chemical structure was characterized by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy coupled with an argon gas cluster ion beam (Ar-GCIB) allowed the study of subsequent layers of the nanoparticles without altering their chemical structure. This revealed the presence of a carbon layer on all nanoparticles consisting of capping agents used in the synthesis and revealed the core-shell character of the zinc ferrite particles. In addition, different types of zinc infusions in the nanoparticle structure were observed when using different Zn/Fe ratios. Finally, magnetic studies performed by means of vibrating sample magnetometry proved the superparamagnetic behavior of all the samples.

Marine plastic debris, including microplastics (<5 mm in size), comprises a suite of chemical ingredients and sorbed chemical contaminants. Thus, microplastics are a potential, and debated, source of anthropogenic chemicals for bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Several studies have investigated the role of microplastics as a vector of contaminants to marine organisms via modeling exercises, laboratory experiments, and field studies. Here, we examined relationships among chemical contaminants and microplastics in lanternfish (family Myctophidae), an important link in marine food webs, from the North Pacific Ocean as a case study from the field. We compared the body burden of several chemical groups (bisphenol A [BPA], nonylphenol [4-NP], octylphenol [4n-OP], alkylphenol ethoxylates [APEs], pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], and polybrominated diphenyl ethers [PBDEs]) in fish caught within and outside the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre where plastic is known to accumulate. We also tested whether there was a relationship between chemical concentrations in fish and plastic density at each sampling location. Mean concentrations of common plastic constituents (BPA, 4-NP, 4n-OP, APEs, and total PBDEs) were comparable between myctophids collected within and outside the North Pacific Gyre. Pesticides were higher in lanternfish caught outside the gyre and were associated with lower plastic density. Total PCBs were also higher in fish outside the gyre. In contrast, lower chlorinated PCB congeners were higher in fish residing in the accumulation zone and were correlated with higher plastic density. This finding is consistent with other studies demonstrating an association between lower chlorinated PCBs and plastics in biota and suggests that microplastic may be a transport mechanism for some chemicals in nature. Magnesium-stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (Mg-ACC), amorphous magnesium calcium silicate hydrate (MCSH), and hydroxyapatite (HAp) are prepared by a precipitation method. By cold-pressing these particles, it is possible to produce porous bulk discs with a narrow pore size distribution. These porous inorganic discs (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp) are investigated as stationary phases to study the chromatographic behavior and adsorption ability of rhodamine B, methylene blue, and ribonuclease. The adsorption affinities of different biomolecules can be easily observed and evaluated through this method. Furthermore, by infiltrating fabricated opaque porous discs with benzyl ether, which has a similar refractive index as the used inorganic particles (Mg-ACC, MCSH, and HAp), their optical properties significantly change and the discs become translucent. Moreover, by infiltrating the MCSH discs with a light-curing polymer, translucent composites with good surface hardness are fabricated. By doping particles with ions such as Ni2+, Co2+ , Fe3+, and Eu3+, the color and UV-visible spectrum of the bulk discs can be adjusted. Typically, by using iron-doped MCSH particles as the inorganic matrix, nanocomposites, which show a steep UV-absorption edge at 400 nm, are fabricated. Our work provides a simple and economical method to evaluate the affinity of biomolecules to inorganic materials and a novel way to fabricate translucent hard composite materials. The fabricated nanocomposite discs show a great UV shielding effect and superior surface hardness compared to polymethyl methacrylate and commercial sunglasses, suggesting their potential as new sunglass materials.

The study was aimed to evaluate the ability of native lichen Xanthoria (X.) parietina to biomonitor and bioaccumulate some heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb), PAHs, PCDDs, PCDFs, PCBs and PBDEs and to evaluate the use of the native X. parietina as a multi-tracer tool for scenarios characterized by different anthropogenic pressures. Samples of native X. parietina were collected in six different sites (two green, two residential and two industrial areas, respectively) and analyzed for the target compounds. The results show that X. parietina was a useful tool for the biomonitoring of air quality in the selected areas, and was able to bioaccumulate all the studied metals and POPs. In particular, the total concentrations dry weight (dw) ranged between 8.1 and 103.4 mg kg(-1) for metals, from 113 x 10(3) to 183 x 10(3) ng kg(-1) for PAHs, from 868 to 7685 ng kg(-1) for PCBs, from 14.3 to 113.8 ng kg(-1) for PCDDs/Fs (Sigma TEq = 0.9-7.1), and from 194 to 554 ng kg(-1) for PBDEs. Besides, in general, the levels of analytes recovered in the different samples of lichen show an increasing trend from green to industrial sites, especially for PCBs (mean values equal to 1218, 4253 and 7192 ng kg(-1) respectively for green, residential and industrial areas). The statistical approach, based on Pearson’s correlation and principal component analysis tests, showed that one of the industrial sites was well-separated from the others, that resulted grouped due to some similarities. The Name is Diphenyl oxide. Through research, I have a further understanding and discovery of 101-84-8.

Aluminides, intermetallic compounds of Al with at least one additional element, are promising materials particularly for high-temperature applications due to their physical and chemical properties. They are typically prepared starting from the elements using compacted, micrometer sized powders or multilayer systems, while the application of nanoparticles as precursors is much more uncommon although the high interface area can have advantages in the reactivity of the materials. We prepared Ni aluminides starting from submicron Al particles and Ni nanoparticles applying a self-propagating reaction. Upon applying separately prepared particles multiphase products containing Ni, Ni3Al, NiAl, Ni2Al3 as well as NiAl3 were observed depending on the sample size and heating rates. The preparation of single phase NiAl was possible applying particle mixtures synthesized by a two-step protocol. In a first step, submicron Al particles were synthesized via thermal decomposition of triisobuty-laluminum. On the surface of the formed Al particles nanocrystalline Ni was deposited in a second step via thermal decomposition of bis(cycloocta-1,5-dien)nickel(0) resulting in the formation of well-mixed Ni-Al particle blends. Heating of powder compacts or loose powders under an atmosphere of Ar resulted in the formation of single phase NiAl at low as well as at high heating rates with no other intermetallic phases being present.
