Restrictions of legacy brominated flame retardants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), have resulted in increased usage of alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs). Consequently, AHFRs contamination has caused a major concern in the scientific community. However, there is limited information on their presence in marine mussels. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels collected from 22 locations in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Our results revealed that Sigma AHFRs were ubiquitous in green mussels with concentrations in the range of 1.08-7.71 ng/g lipid weight (lw). Among target AHFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), decabromodiphenyl (DBDPE) and dechlorane plus (DP) were predominant with their mean values of 1.19, 1.00 and 0.82 ng/g lw, respectively. There were negligible stereoisomer enrichments of DP in green mussels based on f(anti) values, indicating a limited bioaccumulation and metabolism of DP in green mussels. In comparison with other locations, concentrations of the AHFRs in green mussels determined here were at moderate levels. Additionally, there were significant linear relationships between some AHFRs (e.g., HBB and PBEB), suggesting their similar commercial applications and sources in the environment. The estimated daily intakes of AHFRs through consumption of green mussels by the local population in South China were 0.05-0.14 ng/kg body weight/day and 0.17-0.44 ng/kg body weight/day based on the mean and 95th concentrations, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to report AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels.

This study reports the development of a continuous flow process enabling the synthesis of very small iron oxide nanoparticles (VSION) intended for T-1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The influence of parameters, such as the concentration/nature of surfactants, temperature, pressure and the residence time on the thermal decomposition of iron(III) acetylacetonate in organic media was evaluated. As observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the diameter of the resulting nanoparticle remains constant when modifying the residence time. However, significant differences were observed in the magnetic and relaxometric studies. This continuous flow experimental setup allowed the production of VSION with high flow rates (up to 2 mL.min(-1)), demonstrating the efficacy of such process compared to conventional batch procedure for the scale-up production of VSION.

The present article describes the synthesis of a new magnetic polyacrylonitrile-based Pd catalyst involving polyacrylonitrile modified via 2-aminopyridine as an efficient support to immobilize Pd nanoparticles. The simple reusability, easy separation and high stability of this Pd complex make it an excellent candidate to generate a C-O bond via Ph-X activation which is a really important subject in achieving biologically active compounds. It is worth to note access to good and high yields as well as broad substrate scope have resulted from superior reactivity of this catalyst complex. Furthermore, the structure of the magnetic polyacrylonitrile-based heterogeneous catalyst was characterized by fourier transmission infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD). A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

Due to their remarkable properties, task-specific ionic liquids have turned out to be progressively popular over the last few years in the field of green organic synthesis. Herein, for the first time, we report that a new task-specific nitrite-based ionic liquid such as 3-(ethoxycarbonyl)-1-(5-methyl-5-(nitrosooxy)hexyl) pyridin-1-ium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imides (TS-N-IL) derived from biodegradable ethyl nicotinate indeed acted as an efficient and eco-friendly reagent for the synthesis of highly valuable nitroaromatic compounds and drugs including nitroxynil, tolcapone, niclofolan, flutamide, niclosamide and nitrazepam. The bridging of an ionic liquid with nitrite group not only increases the yield and rate of direct C-N bond formation reaction but also allows easy product separation and recyclability of a byproduct. Nonvolatile nature, easy synthesis, merely stoichiometric need and mildness are a portion of the extra focal points of TS-N-IL while contrasted with tert-butyl nitrite an outstanding and highly-flammable reagent utilized largely in organic synthesis. The stability of a and beta nanoporous-crystalline (NC) forms of Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide (PPO), in the presence of guest molecules leading to crystallization in a and beta-form (alpha and beta-guests), is explored. Sorption of liquid guests at 30 degrees C and 60 degrees C is studied both for NC films and NC aerogels. WAXD and FTIR characterizations show that, for all considered conditions, NC alpha-phases after guest sorption/desorption remain unaltered. NC beta-phases, on the contrary, after alpha-guest sorption can be transformed in co-crystalline (CC) alpha-phases that after guest desorption are transformed in NC alpha-phases. All conducted experiments also show that possible planar orientations of NC films (c//or c perpendicular to orientations) remain essentially unaltered, after sorption of all considered guest molecules. The presently discovered beta ->alpha transition constitutes a route to obtain unoriented alpha-form films, which till now were not available by known preparation procedures.

As a kind of brominatedflame retardants (BFRs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are extensively used in different types of electronic equipment, furniture, plastics, and textiles. PBDEs are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that may impact human health and ecosystems. Here we highlight recent findings on the occurrence, contamination status, and transport of PBDEs in soil, water/sediment, and air. Four aspects are discussed in detail: (1) sources of PBDEs to the environment; (2) occurrence and transport of PBDEs in soil; (3) PBDEs in aquatic ecosystems (water/sediment) and their water-sediment partitioning; and (4) the occurrence of PBDEs in the atmosphere and their gas-particle partitioning. Future prospects for the investigation on PBDEs occurrence are also discussed based on current scientific and practical needs.

Control of the nanoscale molecular ordering and charge-carrier mobility of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) was achieved by the combined use of processing additives and thermal annealing. Evaluation of four processing additives (1,8-octanedithiol (ODT), diphenyl ether (DPE), 1-chloronaphthalene (CN), and 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO), which are commonly used for the fabrication of organic solar cells, revealed that the nanoscale molecular ordering and, therefore, the charge-carrier mobility, are largely affected by the additives, as demonstrated by spectral absorption, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. Thermal annealing selectively influenced the morphological changes, depending on the solubility of P3HT in the additive at high temperature. In the case of CN, in which P3HT can be dissolved at moderate temperature, significant molecular ordering was observed even without thermal annealing. For DIO, in which P3HT is only soluble at elevated temperature, the mobility reached 1.14 x 10(-1) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) only after annealing. ODT and DPE were not effective as processing additives in a single-component P3HT. This study provides insight for designing the processing conditions to control the morphology and charge-transport properties of polymers.

The synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) zeolites has garnered attention due to their superior properties for applications that span catalysis to selective separations. Prior studies of 2D zeolite catalysts demonstrated enhanced mass transport for improved catalyst lifetime and selectivity. Moreover, the significantly higher external surface area of 2D materials allows for reactions of bulky molecules too large to access interior pores. There are relatively few protocols for preparing 2D materials, owing to the difficultly of capping growth in one direction to only a few unit cells. To accomplish this, it is often necessary to employ complex, commercially unavailable organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) prepared via multistep synthesis. However, a small subset of zeolite structures exist as naturally layered materials where postsynthesis steps can be used to exfoliate samples and produce ultrathin 2D nanosheets. In this study, we selected a common layered zeolite, the MWW framework, to explore methods of preparing 2D nanosheets via one-pot synthesis in the absence of complex organic templates. Using a combination of high-resolution microscopy and spectroscopy, we show that 2D MMW-type layers with an average thickness of 3.5 nm (ca. 1.5 unit cells) can be generated using the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA), which operates as a dual OSDA and exfoliating agent to affect Al siting and to eliminate the need for postsynthesis exfoliation, respectively. We tested these 2D catalysts using a model reaction that assesses external (surface) Brmnsted acid sites and observed a marked increase in the conversion relative to three-dimensional MWW (MCM-22) and 2D layers prepared from postsynthesis exfoliation (ITQ-2). Collectively, our findings identify a facile and effective route to directly synthesize 2D MWW-type materials, which may prove to be more broadly applicable to other layered zeolites.

Lignin is an abundant source of aromatics, and the depolymerization of lignin provides significant potential for producing high-value chemicals. Selective hydrogenolysis of the C-O ether bond in lignin is an important strategy for the production of fuels and chemical feedstocks. In our study, catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin model compounds (beta-O-4, alpha-O-4 and 4-O-5 model compounds) over Ni3S2-CS catalysts was investigated. Hence, an array of 2D carbon nanostructure Ni3S2-CSs-X-Y derived catalysts were produced using different compositions at different temperatures (X = 0 mg, 0.2 mg, 0.4 mg, 0.6 mg, and 0.8 mg; Y = 600 degrees C, 700 degrees C, 800 degrees C, and 900 degrees C) were prepared and applied for hydrogenolysis of lignin model compounds and depolymerization of alkaline lignin. The highest conversion of lignin model compounds (beta-O-4 model compound) was up to 100% and the yield of the obtained corresponding ethylbenzene and phenol could achieve 92% and 86%, respectively, over the optimal Ni3S2-CSs-0.4-700 catalyst in iPrOH at 260 degrees C without external H-2. The 2D carbon nanostructure catalysts performed a good dispersion on the surface of the carbon nanosheets, which facilitated the cleavage of the lignin ether bonds. The physicochemical characterization studies were carried out by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD, Raman and XPS analyses. Based on the optimal reaction conditions (260 degrees C, 4 h, 2.0 MPa N-2), various model compounds (beta-O-4, alpha-O-4 and 4-O-5 model compounds) could also be effectively hydrotreated to produce the corresponding aromatic products. Furthermore, the optimal Ni3S2-CSs-0.4-700 catalyst could be carried out in the next five consecutive cycle experiments with a slight decrease in the transformation of lignin model compounds.
