Metal-Lewis acid cooperation provides new opportunities in catalysis. In this work, we report a new type of palladium-borane cooperation involving anionic Pd-0 species. The air-stable DPB palladium complex 1 (DPB=diphosphine-borane) was prepared and reacted with KH to give the Pd-0 borohydride 2, the first monomeric anionic Pd-0 species to be structurally characterized. The boron moiety acts as an acceptor towards Pd in 1 via Pd -> B interaction, but as a donor in 2 thanks to B-H-Pd bridging. This enables the activation of C-Cl bonds and the system is amenable to catalysis, as demonstrated by the hydro-/deutero-dehalogenation of a variety of (hetero)aryl chlorides (20 examples, average yield 85 %).

Hierarchically porous P substituted HZSM-5 (H[P, Al]-ZSM-5-AT-0.05 M ) was successfully synthesized by isomorphous substitution method with introduced P atoms into ZSM-5 zeolite frameworks followed by alkali treatment. H[P, Al]-ZSM-5-AT-0.05 M was characterized by XRD, ICP-OES, SEM, FT-IR, N-2 adsorption-desorption, NH3-TPD, XPS, Py-IR, and TG-DTA, respectively. The surface area, pore volume, particle size and P/Al (molar ratio) are 328 m(2).g(-1), 0.23 cm(3).g(-1), 563 nm and 0.027, respectively. The catalytic performance of H[P, Al]-ZSM-5-AT-0.05 M in coupling reaction of methanol with 1-butene was investigated in the fixed-bed reactor. On the condition of reaction temperature at 500 degrees C under atmosphere pressure, the main product is propylene with the selectivity and yield of 33.7% and 31.0%, respectively. Hydrogen transfer index was calculated to 0.24. Moreover, its diffusion limitation was investigated with the self-etherification of benzyl alcohol reaction. The value of Thiele modulus (eta) and effectiveness factor (phi) are 0.08 and 16.9, respectively.

In this work, 1,4-diphenyltriphenylene-grafted (14.2%) polysiloxane (DPTP) was successfully synthesized and statically coated on capillary columns as a stationary phase for gas chromatography. The DPTP columns exhibited excellent efficiencies of 3646 plates m(-1) for a 30 m column and 3125 plates m(-1) for a 10 m column, as evidenced by naphthalene measurements at 120 degrees C, which demonstrated the good film-forming ability of DPTP. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the weight of DPTP is reduced by 2% at 380 degrees C. Separation of the polyethylene pyrolysis product indicated that the maximum allowable operating temperature of the DPTP column is 360 degrees C. The moderate polarity of the DPTP column was investigated in terms of McReynolds constants. The DPTP column was utilized to separate analytes, including aromatic isomers, fatty acid esters, ethers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds, on the basis of the column’s strong pi-pi stacking, dipole-induced dipole, and dispersion interactions with solutes. In general, the DPTP column offers great potential as a novel stationary phase for separating various analytes due to its special structure and remarkable separation performance.

The composition of metal oxide nanoparticles is of great importance for their applications because defects and/or deviation from stoichiometry strongly affect their physical properties. We report here on the crucial role of synthesis parameters such as solvent, ligand, and iron precursors on the composition of spinel iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized by the thermal decomposition method. At first, the investigation of the thermal decomposition of iron stearates bearing either two or three stearate chains by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and Mossbauer spectrometry as a function of temperature and syntheses with only oleic acid and iron stearate confirmed that the composition of the first nuclei is wustite Fe1-xO. The synthesis of nanoparticles with high sizes requires the use of very high boiling point solvents to ensure an effective growth step. We observed that when the grain growth and oxidation kinetics are similar, nanoparticles with a spinel composition and no defects are produced. An oxidation rate slower than the nuclei growth rate favors the formation of core-shell Fe1-xO@Fe3-xO4 NPs. The oxidation kinetics is shown to be influenced by surfactant and solvent natures. Indeed, surfactants such as oleic acid form a dense monolayer at the nuclei surface, and oxidation kinetics will depend on this monolayer permeability. Temperature, solvents with high surfactant affinity, deprotonated surfactants, or decomposition products of solvents affect the monolayer stability and thus the nanoparticle composition. The solvents’ nature and solvent-mediated ligand-ligand interactions are thus evidenced to be important parameters to control the formation of defect-free and stoichiometric oxide nanoparticles.

Nanocasting is a convenient way for preparing highly porous, nanostructured soft materials. Mesoporous polymer nanocasts have been reported for over a decade, however, several aspects remain to be explored further. To do so, we report a comprehensive investigation of the physicochemical characteristics of high surface area functional organic polymers and copolymers obtained by nanocasting. Divinylbenzene, styrene and chloromethyl styrene were selectively polymerized within the pores of mesoporous SBA-15 or KIT-6 silicas. Following template removal, the resulting materials were characterized. The nanocast mesoporous polymers were also modified to introduce functional groups. The success of the functionalization was assessed analytically and by model catalytic tests. The study points to the advantages of the hard templating method for structuring organic materials but also its limitations.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are commonly used as flame retardants (FRs) and plasticizers. The usage of OPEs has increased recently due to the ban of several brominated flame retardants, but information on levels in the environment, including the indoor environment is still limited. We investigated the occurrence and distribution of 12 OPEs in urban house dust from Vancouver, Canada; Istanbul, Turkey; and Cairo, Egypt. The medianSOPE concentration was 41.4 mu g/g in the Vancouver samples while median levels in Istanbul and Cairo were significantly lower. The median composition profiles of OPEs in Vancouver and Cairo were dominated by tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), accounting for 56 and 92% of total OPEs respectively while it showed a detection frequency of only 14% in Istanbul. Tris (2-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant chlorinated OPE representing 20 and 36% of the total OPEs in Vancouver and Istanbul respectively, but was below the detection limit in the Cairo dust samples. Consistent with other studies, SOPE concentrations were similar to 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher than PBDEs and currently used flame retardants in the same dust samples. The mean estimated daily intakes (EDI) of SOPE from dust were 115, 38 and 9 ng/kg/bw/day in Vancouver, Cairo and Istanbul respectively for toddlers where adults were similar to 10 times lower. The total toddler OPE intake ranged from 115 to 2900, 38 to 845 and from9 to 240 ng/kg bw/day across the three cities. TBOEP had the largest contribution to the EDI in both toddler and adults, where toddler TBOEP exposures via dust represented 4% to 80%, 2% to 44% and 0.1% to 6% of the Reference Doses (RfD) in the mean and high intake scenarios for toddlers in Vancouver, Cairo and Istanbul respectively. The crude electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has caused severe contamination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the local environment, begging the question of whether wildlife like birds living at e-waste sites are suffering from adverse effects. We examined several oxidative status markers and their relationships with hepatic concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) that inhabit an e-waste site in South China. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Sigma PCBs (19100 ng/g) and Sigma PBDEs (507 ng/g) in kingfishers from e-waste site were several orders of magnitude higher than those in the species from a reference site. Correspondingly, hepatic concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in kingfishers from the e-waste site were significantly higher than those detected in the reference population, suggesting oxidative distress in the birds breeding at the e-waste site. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the liver from the exposed group were significantly lower compared with the reference group, while the opposite trend was observed for glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Significantly positive correlations were observed between PCB or PBDE concentrations and the levels of MDA and ROS; while negative correlations were found for enzymatic activities of SOD and CAT. Overall, our results may suggest a potential linkage between exposure to e-waste-derived pollutants and elevated oxidative stress, thereby indicating a potential oxidative stress-related health effects in common kingfisher breeding at the e-waste site.

This study aimed to establish marine water quality criteria (MWQC) for emerging chemicals of concern (ECCs) for protecting aquatic life in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of South China. Despite the frequent occurrence and elevated concentrations of these ECCs in the GBA, there is a lack of regional MWQC for these contaminants. We screened 21 common ECCs that were classified into the following six groups: (1) new persistent organic contaminants; (2) brominated flame retardants; (3) perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances; (4) pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs); (5) plasticizers; and (6) personal care products. Globally, MWQC for PhACs remain largely unavailable despite their increasing occurrence in marine environments. Using an integrative scientific approach, we derived interim MWQC for the GBA with specific protection goals. The approach described herein can be applied for the derivation of MWQC for ECCs and the establishment of guidelines for ecological risk assessment in the GBA and other regions.

The characterization results showed that the high-purity nano-AFe(2)O(4) particles were uniformly loaded on mesoporous gamma-Al2O3. Further, it was confirmed that among the several catalysts prepared, the amount of oxygen vacancies (O-vs), Lewis acid sites (LAS), and BrOnsted acid sites (BAS) of the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst were the highest. This meant that the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst had a strong adsorption capacity for toluene and ozone (O-3), and had a strong catalytic activity. When the temperature was 293 K and the space velocity was 1500 h(-1), the mol ratio of O-3 to toluene was 6, the degradation rate of toluene (600 mg m(-3)) can reach an optimum of 99.8%. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fourier infrared (FT-IR) proved superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals by catalytic ozonation. Moreover, the GC-MS analysis results indicated that the toluene degradation began with the oxidation of methyl groups on the benzene ring, eventually producing CO2 and H2O. After repeated experiments, the toluene degradation rate remained stable, and the residual content of O-3 in each litre of produced gas was less than 1 mg L-1, thereby indicating that the ZnFe2O4/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst had excellent reusability and showed great potential for the treatment of toluene waste gas.
