Here, we report the first example of the utilization of p-nitro-tetradecyloxy-calix[4]arene (C4A-NO2) as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The statically coated C4A-NO2 column exhibited a high column efficiency of 3815 plates per m and moderate polarity. The C4A-NO2 column was investigated for its separation performance and retention behaviours by utilizing a wide variety of isomer mixtures, covering alkylated benzenes and naphthalenes, alkenes, furans, alcohols, benzaldehydes, phenols and halogenated anilines. Importantly, the C4A-NO2 column exhibited high resolving capability for both aliphatic and aromatic isomers. Particularly, it displayed advantageous resolving capability over the commercial DB-17 column for halogenated aniline isomers. This work provides a good reference for designing calixarene derivatives as GC stationary phases, which is important for developing a family of stationary phases with specific selectivity.

A green recyclable cellulose-supported Pd(salen)-type catalyst was synthesized through sequential three steps: chlorination with thionyl chloride, modification by ethylenediamine, and the formation of Schiff base with salicylaldehyde to immobilize palladium chloride through multiple binding sites. This novel heterogeneous cellulosic Pd(salen)-type catalytic complex was fully characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XPS, ICP-AES and TG. The traditional cross-coupling chemistry, such as Suzuki, Heck, Sonogashira, Buchwald-Hartwig amination and etherification, was then investigated in the presence of the above cellulose-palladium nanoparticle. Studies have shown that the synthesized catalyst shows high activity and efficiency for all types of transformations, providing the corresponding carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom coupling products in a general and mild manner. Here we present a protocol for analyses of axon regeneration and density in unsectioned adult mouse spinal cord. This includes methods for injury and tracing of dorsal column sensory and corticospinal axons; clearing and staining of unsectioned spinal cord; visualization of axon degeneration and regeneration in cleared and uncleared specimens using two-photon microscopy; and either manual or semi-automatic analysis of axon density and regeneration in 3D space using Imaris and ImageJ software. This protocol can be used to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying nervous system degeneration and regeneration and to establish the therapeutic efficacy of candidate neuroregenerative treatments. Because tissue sectioning is not required, this protocol enables unambiguous evaluation of regeneration and greatly accelerates the speed at which analyses can be conducted. Surgical procedures take < 30 min per mouse, with a wait period of 2 weeks between axonal injury and tracing and 2-8 weeks between tracing and tissue processing. Clearing and immunolabeling take similar to 1-2 weeks, depending on the size of the sample. Imaging and analysis can be performed in 1 d. Isohexides are versatile carbohydrate-based building blocks for designing biodegradable polymers with tunable biodegradability and enhanced material properties owing to their unique high structural rigidity and hydrophilicity. However, the limited reactivity and thermal stability of isohexides, especially the isomers with endo-hydroxyl groups, hamper their practical applications. In this work, fully aliphatic copolyesters based on two isohexide stereoisomers, isosorbide (IS) and isomannide (IM), were comparatively synthesized via a mild lipase-catalyzed polymerization [enzymatic polymerization (EP)] technique. The products were obtained with fairly high molecular weights (M-n values: 15,300-31,500 g.mol(-1)), negligible degree of discoloration, and 20-40 degrees C higher thermal stabilities (T-d,T-5% : 335-360 degrees C) compared to those of their counterparts obtained by melt polymerization (MP). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that the endo-OH is preferred to the exo-OH under the EP process having a high hydrogen-bonding frequency with the catalytic site of CALB (lipase immobilized from Candida antarctica, CALB), and it also requires considerably low energy (70-100 kJ.mol(-1)) to form the second tetrahedral transition-state intermediates. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) study further elucidates the interesting influence of the EP process on inducing specific beta-type crystalline structures.

Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE, with the formula of CH3O-(CH2O)(n)-CH3), as a promising environmentally benign diesel fuel or additive with an enormous potential in the reduction of soot and NIC, emissions, can be efficiently synthesized from methanol derivatives such as dimethoxymethane (DMM) and trioxymethylene (TOM), which requests a proper catalyst of high performance. In this work, the catalytic performance of graphene oxide (GO) in the synthesis of PODEn as well as its relation to the catalyst structure was thoroughly investigated. The results indicate that GO is an excellent catalyst in the synthesis of PODEn from DMM and TOM; a TOM conversion of 94.6% and selectivity of 86.0% to PODE2-8 are achieved under mild reaction conditions, which is superior to the majority of the state-of-the-art catalysts. Meanwhile, the active species and characteristic layer structure of GO sheets catalytically responsible for PODEn formation were discriminated through selectively removing certain surface functional groups, thermally annealing at different temperatures, and carefully comparing with a series of model compounds. The results illustrate that the superior catalytic performance of GO in the PODEn synthesis should be ascribed to a synergy between the surface sulfonyl, hydroxyl and carboxyl groups present on the GO surface and the unique layered structure of GO sheets, wherein the surface sulfonyl groups act as the main active sites. The insights shown in this work are beneficial to a deep understanding on the catalytic principle of GO and development of efficient catalyst for the synthesis of PODEn.

Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) has recently attracted great concerns due to its potential contribution to climate change. It was reported that dissolved Fe(III) species can act as an efficient oxidant to catalyze the polymerization of volatile phenol substances, subsequently forming atmospheric BrC in aerosols. Since Fe in the atmosphere is commonly associated with clay mineral dusts, the transformation of phenol substances on Fe-bearing clay mineral surface is potentially important for BrC formation. In this study, taking guaiacol as the model phenol substance, its brown carbon formation process was investigated on Fe(III) modified montmorillonite under different relative humidities (RHs). The spectroscopic features and compositions of the produced BrC were systematically characterized. The results demonstrated that the interface FeOH2+ is the key species to promote the polymerization of guaiacol, and RH plays a significant role to influence the surface acidity of clay and the gas-to-particle adsorption of guaiacol. The BrC was produced with the most abundance and variety under moderate RH (similar to 33%), while higher RH (similar to 100%) accelerated the polymerization rate. Since aerosol moisture content might not largely influence the hydroxylation states of the surface bearing Fe(III) species, it signifies the importance of clay associated Fe(III) to catalyze the BrC formation in varied conditions Our study highlights the importance of clay mineral dust on the formation of BrC, and reveals the brown carbon formation pathways under environmentally relevant conditions.

As a fundamental type of carbonylation reaction, the alkoxy- and hydroxy-carbonylation of unsaturated hydrocarbons constitutes one of the most important industrial applications of homogeneous catalysis. However, owing to the difficulties in controlling multi-selectivities for asymmetric hydrocarbonylation of alkenes, this reaction is typically limited to vinylarenes and analogues. In this work, a highly efficient asymmetric alkoxy- and hydroxy-carbonylation of beta-carbonyl functionalized alkenes was developed, providing practical and easy access to various densely functionalized chiral molecules with high optical purity from broadly available alkenes, CO, and nucleophiles (>90 examples, 84-99 % ee). This protocol features mild reaction conditions and a broad substrate scope, and the products can be readily transformed into a diverse array of chiral heterocycles. Control experiments revealed the key role of the beta-carbonyl group in determining the enantioselectivity and promoting the activity, which facilitates chiral induction by coordination to the transition metal as rationalized by DFT calculations. The strategy of utilizing an innate functional group as the directing group on the alkene substrate might find further applications in catalytic asymmetric hydrocarbonylation reactions.

The design of novel materials to use simultaneously in an ocular system for driven therapeutics and wound healing is still challenging. Here, we produced nanocomposites of tungsten disulfide carriers with spherical cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) as core inside a cubic iron oxide NPs shell (WS2/s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that 10 nm s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4 NPs were attached on the WS2 sheet surfaces. The cytotoxicity of the WS2 sheets and nanocomposites were evaluated on bovine cornea endothelial cells (BCECs) using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay for a duration of three days. The MTT assay results showed low toxicity of the WS2 sheets on BCECs by 67% cell viability at 100 mu g/mL in 24 h, while the nanocomposites show 50% cell viability in the same conditions. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of nanocomposites revealed the excellent T-2-weighted imaging with an r(2) contrast of 108 mM(-1) S-1. The in vitro photothermal therapy based on WS2 sheets and WS2/s-CoFe2O4 @c-Fe3O4 nanocomposites using 808 nm laser showed that the maximum thermal energy dispatched in medium at different applied power densities (1200 mw, 1800, 2200, 2600 mW) was for 0.1 mg/mL of the sample solution. The migration assay of BCECs showed that the wound healing was approximately 20% slower for the cell exposed by nanocomposites compared with the control (no exposed BCECs). We believe that WS2/s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4 nanocomposites have a synergic effect as photothermal therapy agents for eye diseases and could be a target in an ocular system using MRI.

This paper studies the cooperative effect of Au nanoparticles deposited on vanadyl pyrophosphate oxide (VPO) in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol. VPO was prepared using the classical method by thermally treating VOHPO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O precursor in reacting atmosphere at 420 degrees C for a period of 72 h. Au nanoparticles were deposited by incipient wetness method. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, TEM, XPS and Raman. The bulk VPO catalyst contains vanadyl pyrophosphate phase ((VO)(2)P2O7), and a small amount of VOPO4. The catalytic system exhibits a high activity in the base-free liquid phase oxidation of alcohols compared to Au on activated carbon, classic catalyst used for this type of reaction. Au/VPO showed a high peculiar selectivity to benzyl benzoate (76%), an important product used in the pharmaceutical and perfume industries. This behavior might be ascribed to the presence of strong acid sites of VPO, as determined by liquid phase titration. Stability tests performed on Au/VPO showed a deactivation of 10% after the first run, but a constant conversion along the following five cycles. This phenomenon can be attributed to the increase of mean Au particle size (from 19.1 to 23.4 nm) after recycling tests as well as the partial leaching of Au and V in the reaction media. Moreover, XRD evidenced a modification in the VPO structure with the partial formation of VOHPO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O phase.
