The dependence of the selective oxidation catalytic activity of Au-Pd supported on titanate nanotubes on the catalyst preparation method has been investigated. The most active Au-Pd/Ti-NT catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol is shown to be that prepared using colloidal synthesis and immobilization with PVA as a stabilizer, which has markedly superior catalytic activity compared to catalysts prepared by deposition-precipitation, adsorption, and dry impregnation methods. Au-Pd NPs stabilized by graphene oxide sheets and immobilized on Ti-NT has also been studied and while not optimum shows promising catalytic activity. The superior catalytic activity of the catalysts prepared by colloidal synthesis is attributed to the high metal dispersion on the external surfaces of Ti-NT, the narrow particle size distribution, and the high degree of Au-Pd alloying. This work also demonstrates that in the adsorption method of preparation using HAuCl4.3H(2)O and PdCl2 precursors, the uptake of Pd ions in solution by Ti-NT is proportional to the sodium content in Ti-NT, which implies that Na is involved in an ion-exchange reaction with Pd ions.

Aim: Organophosphorus compounds are irreversible inhibitors of AChE. Without immediate countermeasure, intoxication leads quickly to death. None of the clinically-used causal antidotes can ensure a good prognosis for any poisoned patient. When fallen into the wrong hands, organophosphates represent a serious threat to mankind. Results & methodology: Herein, we describe two novel compounds as unique merged molecules built on a tacrine scaffold against organophosphorus intoxication. These reactivators of AChE have balanced physicochemical properties, and should be able to cross the blood-brain barrier with a slightly lowered cytotoxicity profile compared to reference tacrine. In the present study, we report the synthesis of a series of copper(II) complexes with a wide range of ligands and their testing in the copper catalyzed Chan-Evans-Lam (CEL) coupling of aniline and phenylboronic acid. The efficiency of the coupling was directly connected with the ease of the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) of the complexes. The most efficient catalyst was derived from 4-t-butyl-2,5-bis[(quinolinylimino)methyl]phenolate and two Cu(II) ions. Depending on the counter-anion nature and the concentration of the reaction mixture, the reaction can be directed to predominant C-N-bond formation. Forty-three derivatives of diphenylamine were prepared under the optimized conditions. The proposed mechanism of the catalysis was based on the reduction potential of a series of complexes, molecular weight measurements of the catalytic complex in MeOH and the kinetic studies of aniline and phenylboronic acid coupling. In addition, an H-1 NMR experiment in a sealed NMR tube, without external oxygen supply available, proved that no complete Cu(II) to Cu(I) conversion was observed under the condition, ruling out the usually accepted mechanism of the C-N coupling, which included the oxygenation of the intermediately formed Cu(I) complexes after the key step of C-N conversion had already been completed. Instead, a mechanism was proposed, involving an oxygen molecule coordinated to two copper ions in the key C-N bond formation without any detectable conversion of the Cu(II) complexes to Cu(I).

This paper studies the cooperative effect of Au nanoparticles deposited on vanadyl pyrophosphate oxide (VPO) in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol. VPO was prepared using the classical method by thermally treating VOHPO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O precursor in reacting atmosphere at 420 degrees C for a period of 72 h. Au nanoparticles were deposited by incipient wetness method. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, TEM, XPS and Raman. The bulk VPO catalyst contains vanadyl pyrophosphate phase ((VO)(2)P2O7), and a small amount of VOPO4. The catalytic system exhibits a high activity in the base-free liquid phase oxidation of alcohols compared to Au on activated carbon, classic catalyst used for this type of reaction. Au/VPO showed a high peculiar selectivity to benzyl benzoate (76%), an important product used in the pharmaceutical and perfume industries. This behavior might be ascribed to the presence of strong acid sites of VPO, as determined by liquid phase titration. Stability tests performed on Au/VPO showed a deactivation of 10% after the first run, but a constant conversion along the following five cycles. This phenomenon can be attributed to the increase of mean Au particle size (from 19.1 to 23.4 nm) after recycling tests as well as the partial leaching of Au and V in the reaction media. Moreover, XRD evidenced a modification in the VPO structure with the partial formation of VOHPO4 center dot 0.5H(2)O phase.

A novel Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation of arenes to access valuable 1-fluoroalkyl-1,1-biaryl compounds is established under mild conditions. Synthesis of size-controlled anisotropic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles allows designing next-generation magnetic nanosystems with predetermined magnetic properties suited for particular applications in the biomedical, information, and environment fields. In this work, we report a reproducible and economical approach for fabricating anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles via the thermal decomposition method. Controlling the reaction environment, i.e. the degassing pressure, is essential to obtain the reproducible synthesis of anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles along with monodispersity in the size and shape. At low degassing pressure, Fe3O4 nanocubes are formed, and an increase in degassing pressure leads to the formation of Fe3O4 octahedral nanoparticles. To achieve good reproducibility (with respect to size and shape) between different batches, our finding reveals the importance of maintaing the same degassing pressure. The size of the anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be varied by changing the heating rate and the solvent amount. The amount of solvent has also an influence on the shape of the nanoparticles, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles of flower morphology are obtained at a high solvent amount. The work also provides new conceptual fundamental insights into understanding the growth mechanism of anisotropic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and thus advancing the field of materials chemistry for rationally designing anisotropic nanoparticles with tunable magnetic properties.

Sixty-one serum samples from a Norwegian cohort were analyzed for 43 emerging and legacy halogenated flame retardants (HFRs). BDE-47, -153, -197 and -209 were detected in > 56% of the samples with median concentrations of 0.23, 1.0, 0.64 and 1.5 ng/g lipid, respectively. BDE-49, -85, -99, -100, -154, -206, -207, 208 as well as HBB, syn- and anti-DDC-CO, OBTMPI, DBDPE, alpha-HBCDD and TBBPA were also detected in some serum samples (detection frequencies of 2-36%). Other tri-octaBDEs, TBP-AE, alpha- and beta-DBE-DBCH, BATE, pTBX, alpha beta-TBCO, PBBz, TBCT, PBT, PBEB, DPTE, EH-TBB, BTBPE, BEH-TEBP, HCDBCO, beta- and gamma-HBCDD were below the limits of detection (mLOD). Concentrations of individual BDE congeners detected in this study were within the range from previous European studies. Positive correlations were seen between concentrations of BDE-47 in dust and BDE-153 in serum, between BDE-153 in dust and BDE-153 in serum, and between BDE-153 masses in handwipes and BDE-47 concentrations in serum (Spearman’s rank, 0.29 < r < 0.43). Associations between the number of phones/mobiles, numbers of electronic equipment per person in the home and the consumption of specific food categories (such as soups/spices/sauces and alcoholic beverages) with BDE-47 and -153 serum levels were confirmed by multivariate linear regression analyses. The measured median serum level of BDE-47 was slightly over-predicted by a factor of 5.5 whereas other BDE congeners were under-predicted by factors of 13-6000 when compared to serum concentrations predicted from external exposure media (inhalation, dermal uptake, dietary intake from duplicate diet and dust ingestion) using a simple one compartment pharmacokinetic (PK) model. BDE-153 was not detected and BDE-197 not analyzed in food so no dietary intake assessments for these could be made, which may partially explain the discrepancies between their measured and predicted serum concentrations. Overall, our results suggest that exposure via diet is the most important exposure pathway for BDE-47 and -209, with diet being responsible for more than 96% of the total daily intake of these two BDEs in the Norwegian cohort. Obtaining bulk materials ordered at the nanoscale using nanoparticles as building blocks is a new challenge for scientists and is of primary interest in some research areas. In this study, we developed a simple one-pot route towards nanostructured hybrid materials based on uranium oxide through a non-hydrolytic condensation process under mild solvothermal conditions (T = 160 degrees C) using ditopic organic linkers as structuring agents. The obtained materials present a sand rose morphology composed of agglomerated nanometric sheets with a lamellar substructure. Nanometric sheets are composed of inorganic fringes consisting of a studtite phase [(UO2)O-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O that alternates with organic fringes formed by the structuring organic linker. A multiparametric study based on SAXS experiments and TEM analyses has highlighted the control of structural parameters by varying some synthesis conditions. The interlamellar distances are tunable from 1.60 nm to 1.94 nm through the length of the structuring linker and the inter-sheet distance from 1.85 nm to 2.10 nm through synthesis temperature. This efficient one-pot route appears to be very promising for the production of tunable multiscale nanostructured hybrid materials and can be implemented in many research areas, paving the way for various applications.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are extensively used as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in different types of materials, which have been listed as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention in 2009 and 2017. Due to their ubiquities in the environment and toxicities, PBDEs have posed great threat to both human health and ecosystems. The aim of this review is to offer a comprehensive understanding of the exposure pathways, levels and trends and associated health risks of PBDEs in human body in a global scale. We systematically reviewed and described the scientific data of PBDE researches worldwide from 2010 to March 2020, focusing on the following three areas: (1) sources and human external exposure pathways of PBDEs; (2) PBDE levels and trends in humans; (3) human data of PBDEs toxicity. Dietary intake and dust ingestion are dominant human exposure pathways. PBDEs were widely detected in human samples, especially in human serum and human milk. Data showed that PBDEs are generally declining in human samples worldwide as a result of their phasing out. Due to the common use of PBDEs, their levels in humans from the USA were generally higher than that in other countries. High concentrations of PBDEs have been detected in humans from PBDE production regions and e-waste recycling sites. BDE-47, -153 and -99 were proved to be the primary congeners in humans. Human toxicity data demonstrated that PBDEs have extensively endocrine disruption effects, developmental effects, and carcinogenic effects among different populations.
