Low-Cost Regulating Lithium Deposition Behaviors by Transition Metal Oxide Coating on Separator

The application of lithium metal anode, despite being of the highest capacity, is hindered by low Coulombic efficiency (CE) and serious lithium dendrites formation. A strategy of transition metal oxides (TMOs) particles coated porous polypropylene (PP) separator is developed to regulate lithium deposition behaviors through in situ forming artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) passivating layers. By virtue of quite low solubilities of TMOs in the electrolyte, the concentration of TMOs in the electrolyte can be maintained at a constant and the dissolved TMOs can be reduced to produce Li2O and Mn particles, which not only function as lithium nucleating seeds but are also involved in the formation of the SEI layer. The sustainably existed trace of TMOs ensures the artificial SEI layer can be re-healed once damaged by the volume expansion of lithium. Size-Based Cationic Molecular Sieving through Solid-State Nanochannels

The molecular sieving behavior of soft-etched polyimide membranes having negatively charged nanochannels is described experimentally and theoretically using alkali metal-crown ether cationic complexes and alkylammonium cations. To this end, the electrical conduction and current rectification obtained with different alkali electrolyte solutions (LiCl, NaCl, and KCl) and crown ether molecules (12-crown-4, 15-crown-5, and 18-crown-6) are studied. The results suggest that only the [Li(12C4)](+) complex can readily permeate through the nanochannels because significant current decreases are obtained in the cases of the [Na(15C5)](+) and [K(18C6)](+) complexes. In solutions of organic cations ranging from ammonium (NH4+) to alkylammonium (R4N+) with increasing molecular size, only the smaller ions can conduct high electric currents, suggesting again that the membrane channels are in the nanometer range. Taken together, the observed current decreases and rectification phenomena demonstrate that the functionalized membranes allow a versatile combination of molecular and electrostatic sieving.

A review of electrically conductive poly(ether ether ketone) materials

Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a high-performance thermoplastic with a distinctive combination of corrosion resistance, thermo-oxidative stability and outstanding physical and mechanical properties at high temperatures. A pertinent step forward in the development of this thermoplastic has been the inclusion of electrically conductive fillers to expand its functionality. In this review an overview of the research on electrically conductive PEEK composites is provided. Conductive filler type, fabrication methods, characterization details and different properties are described. Carbon nanotubes, graphene nanoplatelets and other organic and inorganic conductive fillers such as expanded graphite and nickel have been incorporated into PEEK by techniques such as extrusion, injection moulding and cold and hot compression moulding and in some cases with pre-processing steps including mechanochemical modifications in organic solvents. The influences of type, loading and compatibilization of fillers and processing conditions on the mechanical and electrical conductivity properties of the composites are analysed and compared. The incorporated fillers have been able to enhance the electrical conductivity of the PEEK composites to either the semiconducting or conductive regions. PEEK composites containing carbon nanotubes compatibilized by polysulfones and poly(ether imide) achieved electrical conductivity values in the semiconducting region at the lowest electrical percolation threshold of 0.1 wt%. Additionally, the inclusion of 10 wt% expanded graphite and 10 vol% inorganic macroparticles of nickel noticeably improved the electrical conductivity of PEEK into the conductive region. Effects of tea tree oil supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune status and microbial community in weaned pigs

The objective of this study was to determine whether dietary tea tree oil (TTO) supplementation could effectively replace the antibiotics through modulating the antioxidant capacity and intestinal microbiota profile, and then decreasing the diarrhoea incidence and improving the growth performance of weaned pigs. A total of 216 weaned pigs with initial body weights (BW) of 9.19 +/- 1.86 kg were randomly allocated to three dietary treatments in a completely randomised design. The dietary treatments included a corn-soybean meal basal diet (CON) without any antibiotics, and two experimental diets formulated by adding 75 mg/kg aureomycin (AGP) or 100 mg/kg TTO into the basal diet, respectively. Pigs fed the TTO diet showed greater gain to feed ratio (p < 0.05) than those fed CON and AGP diets during d 0-14 and d 14-28. Both dietary TTO and AGP supplementation tended to increase the average daily gain of weaned pigs during d 14-28 (p = 0.06) and the overall 28-d period (p = 0.07), and significantly reduced (p < 0.05) the diarrhoea incidence during d 0-14 compared with the CON treatment. In addition, dietary TTO supplementation improved the apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and ether extract (p < 0.05), and increased (p < 0.05) the propionate and butyrate concentrations in faecal samples of weaned pigs. Moreover, pigs fed the TTO diet showed greater total antioxidant capacity, greater superoxide dismutase and interleukin-10 concentrations, and lower malondialdehyde concentration in serum than those fed the CON diet (p < 0.05). Furthermore, pigs fed the TTO diet demonstrated greater relative abundance of Clostridiaceae_1, while those fed the AGP diet exhibited greater relative abundance of Lactobacillaceae at family level. In conclusion, dietary TTO supplementation could improve growth performance in weaned pigs, which could be mainly attributed to the benefits on nutrient digestibility, antioxidative capacity and microbial community profile. The effect of counter-ion substitution on poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) amphoteric ion exchange membranes for vanadium redox flow battery

The study proposed a novel method to prepare poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) amphoteric ion exchange membranes (Q/S-M) with both increased efficiency and chemical stability for vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) applications. Q/S-M membranes were obtained after the successive amination and acidification process of blend base membranes prepared from brominated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) (BPPEK) and sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) substituted by counter-ions (SPPEK-M), where M was defined as counter-ions: Li+, Na+ and K+. The study analyzed the effect of counter-ion size on properties of Q/S-M membranes, which were compared with those for Q/S membrane obtained from BPPEK and SPPEK in acid form. Q/S and Q/S-M membranes maintained the same composition of ionic groups. The Q/S-M membranes induced by bigger counter-ion size showed the increasing of water content and ion diffusion rate, which was higher than that of Q/S membrane. Related to Q/S membrane, Q/S-K membrane possessed almost half area resistance (0.67 Omega cm(2) vs 1.43 Omega cm(2)), and the value was close to that of Nafion115. Q/S-M membranes exhibited a 96.0-98.8% decrease in VO2+ permeability over Nafion115. Q/S-K membrane displayed a 6.5% increase in VE and correspondingly a 6.2% increase in EE over Q/S membrane, maintaining superior EE than Nafion115 (89.7% vs 86.5%). The ex-situ degradation test in VO2+ solutions indicated that despite close EE, Q/S-K membrane showed superior chemical stability over amphoteric ion exchange membranes (AIEMs) in our previous works. There was no obvious efficiency decay of Q/S-K membrane during 100-cycles test, indicating the good duration in operating VRB.

Accurate and rapid detection of Fasciola hepatica copro-DNA in sheep using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique

Fascioliasis is a parasitic infection caused by Fasciola spp. in humans and animals. Despite significant advances in vaccination and new therapeutic agents, little attention has been paid to validate methods for the diagnosis of fascioliasis in animals. This study aimed to compare the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique with PCR assay for the diagnosis of F. hepatica in sheep. In this cross-sectional study, 195 stool samples were collected from sheep for 3 months in Lorestan province, West of Iran. Specimens’ parasitological examination was performed by using the direct wet mount and formalin-ether concentration method. After DNA extraction from the samples, molecular analysis was done using PCR and LAMP techniques based on the Fasciola ribosomal intergenic spacer (IGS) sequence. Of 195 specimens of sheep, 11 specimens were identified as F. hepatica-positive infection by using microscopic, PCR and LAMP assays. Kappa agreement test results showed that there was a significant agreement between the results of microscopic examination diagnostic tests, PCR and LAMP (Kappa = 0.51-0.72 and p < .001). According to the results of chi-square comparisons between parasite prevalence applying different techniques and variables of age, sex breed, and type of drinking water, there was no significant relationship (p >= .05). However, most of the infected sheep with Fasciola were 3- to 4-year-old females, of the Lori breed and consumed tap water. In many endemic areas, successful prevention and treatment of fascioliasis in animals depend on rapid and accurate diagnosis. Based on the results of the Kappa agreement, the significant agreement among the results of the microscopic examination, PCR and LAMP indicates the accuracy and reliability of these tests in the diagnosis of F. hepatica in sheep. Perinatal exposure to BDE-47 exacerbated autistic-like behaviors and impairments of dendritic development in a valproic acid-induced rat model of autism

Perinatal exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) may be a potential risk factor for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). BDE-47 is one of the most common PBDEs and poses serious health hazards on the central nervous system (CNS). However, effects of perinatal exposure to BDE-47 on social behaviors and the potential mechanisms are largely unexplored. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether BDE-47 exposure during gestation and lactation led to autistic-like behaviors in offspring rats in the present study. Valproic acid (VPA), which is widely used to establish animal model of ASD, was also adopted to induce autistic-like behaviors. A battery of tests was conducted to evaluate social and repetitive behaviors in offspring rats. We found that perinatal exposure to BDE-47 caused mild autistic-like behaviors in offspring, which were similar but less severe to those observed in pups maternally exposed to VPA. Moreover, perinatal exposure to BDE-47 aggravated the autistic-like behaviors in pups maternally exposed to VPA. Abnormal dendritic development is known to be deeply associated with autistic-like behaviors. Golgi-Cox staining was used to observe the morphological characteristics of dendrites in the prefrontal cortex of pups. We found perinatal exposure to BDE-47 reduced dendritic length and complexity of branching pattern, and spine density in the offspring prefrontal cortex, which may contribute to autistic-like behaviors observed in the present study. Perinatal exposure to BDE-47 also exacerbated the impairments of dendritic development in pups maternally exposed to VPA. Besides, our study also provided the evidence that the inhibition of BDNF-CREB signaling, a key regulator of dendritic development, may be involved in the dendritic impairments induced by perinatal exposure to BDE-47 and/or VPA, and the consequent autistic-like behaviors.

Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of aryl diazonium salts are generally assumed to proceed via cationic Pd-II intermediates which in turn would be highly reactive in the subsequent transmetalation step. Contrary to this belief, we herein report our observation and rationalization of opposing reactivities of ArN2+ in Suzuki (=effective) and Stille (=ineffective) cross-couplings in MeOH. Our systematic experimental and computational studies on the roles of transmetalating agent, solvent, base and the likely involvement of in situ formed diazoether derivatives challenge the currently accepted mechanism. Our data suggest that the observed solvent dichotomy is primarily due to Pd-II-methoxy intermediates being formed, which are unreactive with arylstannanes, but highly reactive with arylboronic acids, complementing the Suzuki Pd-oxy mechanism with the direct demonstration of transmetalation of a Pd-II-alkoxy complex. Lewis acids were found to circumvent this reactivity divergence, promoting efficient couplings regardless of the employed conditions or coupling partners.

A modified reduced graphite oxide anode for sodium ion storage in ether-based electrolyte

In this work, reduced graphite oxide (rGO) with a long-range-ordered layered structure and an expanded interlayer spacing is synthesized and utilized as an anode for sodium ion storage. Unlike Na+-solvent co-intercalation in flake graphite, the interaction between Na-ions and graphene layers of the rGO shows a capacitive behavior. All the surface defects, pores, and functional groups generated on the surface of rGO can contribute to additional capacity of sodium storage. Thereby, a reversible capacity of 145.7 mAh g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and a rate performance of 131.7 mAh g(-1) at 1.8 A g(-1) could be obtained. Capacity retention of 87.7 % after 900 cycles at 400 mA g(-1) was also achieved. Further enhancement in cycling stability, with little capacity decay after 1500 cycles, was obtained after incorporating Ag onto the surface of the rGO. The rGO-Ag anode delivered higher energy density and power density as compared to rGO at the same current density. Even at a power density of 5493 W kg(-1) (3A g(-1), 24 C), the energy density was as high as 236.2 Wh kg(-1). Catalytic Conversion of Pyrolysis Oil to Alcohols and Alkanes in Supercritical Methanol over the CuMgAlOx Catalyst

Pyrolysis oil (PO) is an inexpensive biofuel produced via the fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass. However, PO is unstable and has low energy density, making it unsuitable as a fuel in conventional engines without upgrading. Supercritical methanol depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation were used to convert PO to a mixture of alkanes and alcohols in a continuous packed-bed reaction using the CuMgAlOx catalyst. The PO was pretreated at low temperature to convert acids, aldehydes, and ketones. The pretreated PO was converted continuously for 11 h until the packed bed plugged from coke formation. The catalyst deactivated over time from the deposition of high molecular weight pyrolytic lignin (PL) species. Oxygenates and anhydrosugars in the sugar-rich aqueous fraction of PO were converted to C-2-C-6 alcohols, esters, and ethers through a mixed hydrodeoxygenation and Guerbet coupling reaction pathway. PL was converted to a mixture of oxygenated aromatics including naphthenes and cyclohexanols.
