In this study, we have designed and synthesized a low-bandgap polymer, DPP-Qx, using quinoxaline (Qx), a non-alkylated weak acceptor, with diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as an electron donor. The incorporation of Qx into DPP leads to the highest occupied molecular orbital level at -5.1 eV with a narrow optical bandgap (1.25 eV). The synthesized polymer is utilized in photovoltaics, and the photovoltaic properties are studied. This DPP-Qx with fullerene acceptors in polymer solar cells (PSCs) exhibits efficiency of 3.26%. Moreover, a minimum energy loss of 0.57 eV along with high extended external quantum efficiency is achieved with the DPP-Qx electron donor. The thermal, electrical and optical properties, energy levels and hole mobility of the synthesized polymer are studied and discussed.

To facilitate faster selectivity evaluation of wall-coated, open-tubular columns using the solvation parameter model a reduced set of calibration compounds is identified and validated for the temperature ranges 60-140 degrees C and 160-260 degrees C. The Kennard-Stone uniform mapping algorithm is used to identify the calibration compounds from a larger database of compounds with known retention properties previously adopted for column selectivity evaluation. Thirty-five compounds for each temperature range are required to minimize the standard deviation of the system constants used for selectivity evaluation and to minimize differences between system constants determined by conventional calibration and the reduced calibration compounds. The models for the reduced calibration compounds on ten siloxane-based and poly(ethylene glycol) stationary phases have a coefficient of determination of 0.984 to 0.998 and standard error of the estimate of 0.012 to 0.30. The predictive capability of models is evaluated for the reduced sets of calibration compounds using external test sets with ranking of the calibration models by changes in the average error, average absolute error and root mean square error of prediction for the test sets. For the selected thirty-five reduced calibration compounds the range for the average absolute error was 0.014 to 0.033 and 0.016 to 0.040 for the root mean square error of prediction for the independent test sets. Pb-210-dated sediment cores and surface sediments from Lake Chapala (LC), Mexico, were analyzed to assess the temporal trends in concentrations and fluxes of persistent organic pollutants (POPs: PAHs, PCBs and PBDEs). Total sediment concentrations of PAHs (95-1,482 ng g(-1)), PCBs (9-27 ng g(-1)) and PBDEs (0.2-2.5 ng g(-1)) were indicative of moderate to intense contamination. The POP concentrations have progressively increased since the 1990s. The light molecular weight PAHs, and the prevalence of PCB congeners with low-chlorination levels (e.g., di- to tri-CB) and low-to medium-brominated (tri- to penta-BDE) PBDEs in most sections of the sediment profiles, suggested that these POPs have most likely reached these sediments by long-range atmospheric transport from distant sources; although the significant presence of heavier PAH, PCB and PBDE congeners in the topmost sediments, indicate that other nearby and local sources (soil erosion from the catchment, urban and industrial wastewaters discharges, as well as navigation) might have also contributed to the recent input of POPs to LC. Taking into account the relevance of LC as regional freshwater supply and commercial fishing ground, the potential risk posed by the organic contaminated sediments to the biota and human population should not be underestimated.

Here we present a protocol for analyses of axon regeneration and density in unsectioned adult mouse spinal cord. This includes methods for injury and tracing of dorsal column sensory and corticospinal axons; clearing and staining of unsectioned spinal cord; visualization of axon degeneration and regeneration in cleared and uncleared specimens using two-photon microscopy; and either manual or semi-automatic analysis of axon density and regeneration in 3D space using Imaris and ImageJ software. This protocol can be used to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying nervous system degeneration and regeneration and to establish the therapeutic efficacy of candidate neuroregenerative treatments. Because tissue sectioning is not required, this protocol enables unambiguous evaluation of regeneration and greatly accelerates the speed at which analyses can be conducted. Surgical procedures take < 30 min per mouse, with a wait period of 2 weeks between axonal injury and tracing and 2-8 weeks between tracing and tissue processing. A multitude of metrics exist to assign scores to synthetic routes within computer-aided synthesis planning (CASP) tools. A quantitative scoring method is necessary to identify the most promising synthetic approaches to a molecule. However, current CASP tools are limited in their capacity to evaluate reaction selectivity and are unable to fully account for the effect of side products on the purification sequences associated with chemical syntheses. We develop a novel quantitative metric called ExtractionScore for evaluating synthetic routes based on the predicted identities of side products as well as the separability of major and side products by liquid-liquid extraction based on chemical property prediction. By comparing industrially practiced routes to a collection of 200 pharmaceutically relevant compounds with routes suggested by state-of-the-art CASP software, we show that ExtractionScore may improve retrosynthetic recommendations by incorporating information about the formation of side products.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an approved modality for the treatment of various types of maligancies and diseased states. However, most of the available photosensitizers (PS) are highly hydrophobic, which limits their solubility and dispersion in biological fluids and can lead to self-quenching and sub-optimal therapeutic efficacy. In this study, chlorin e6 (Ce6)-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) nanoclusters (Ce6-SCs) were prepared via an oil-in-water emulsion. The physical chemical properties of the Ce6-SCs were systematically evaluated. Dual-mode imaging and PDT was subsequently performed in tumor-bearing mice. Chlorin e6 is capable of solubilizing hydrophobic SPION into stable, water-soluble nanoclusters without the use of any additional amphiphiles or carriers. The method is reproducible and the Ce6-SCs are highly stable under physiological conditions. The Ce6-SCs have an average diameter of 92 nm and low polydispersity (average PDI < 0.2). Encapsulation efficiency of both Ce6 and SPION is approximate to 100%, and the total Ce6 payload can be as high as 56% of the total weight (Ce6 + Fe). The Ce6-SCs localize within tumors via enhanced permeability and retention and are detectable by magnetic resonance (MR) and optical imaging. A novel and highly active zeolite Y/ZSM-5 composite zeolite (CZ)-supported nickel catalyst (Ni/CZ with 10% of Ni loading) was prepared by modified deposition-precipitation to uniformly disperse Ni nanoparticles (NNPs) onto CZ. Hecaogou subbituminous coal was exhaustively extracted with isometric carbon disulfide/acetone mixed solvent to afford the extractable portion and inextractable portion (IEP). Ethanol-soluble portion (ESP) was obtained by ethanolyzing the IEP at 300 degrees C and subjected to catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) over Ni-10%/CZ at 160 degrees C to afford catalytically hydroconverted ESP (CHCESP). Both ESP and CHCESP were analyzed with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), and quadrupole exactive orbitrap mass spectrometer. The results show that the relative contents (RCs) of both chain alkanes and hydroarenes in CHCESP are significantly higher than those in ESP and cyclanes and alkenes were only detected in CHCESP, while the RCs of both arenes and oxygen-containing organic compounds in CHCESP are much lower than those in ESP and nitrogen- and/or sulfur-containing organic compounds were only detected in ESP with GC/MS. According to the CHC of oxybis(methylene)dibenzene (OBMDB), Ni-10%/CZ can effectively activate H-2 to biatomic active hydrogen (H center dot center dot center dot H) and the resulting H center dot center dot center dot H was heterolytically split into an immobile H- attached on Ni/CZ and a mobile H+. H+ transfers to an oxygen atom (OA) in OBMDB and cleaves the C-O bridged bond to produce phenylmethanol (PM) and benzylium, followed by H- abstraction from the Ni/CZ surface by benzylium to form toluene. H+ transfer to the OA in PM also leads to the cleavage of the C-O bond in PM to produce H2O and benzylium, which abstracts H- from the Ni/CZ surface to yield toluene. H center dot center dot center dot H transfer to the benzene ring in toluene generates methylcyclohexane. Therefore, Ni-10%/CZ catalyzes both H+ and H center dot center dot center dot H transfer. The coupling reactions of phenols and nitrogen hetereocycles with aryl halide were catalyzed by a highly active, readily available and easily recoverable heterogeneous Cu catalyst which was prepared by simply stirring an suspension of chitosan in solvent with copper compound. The result showed that chitosan@Cu2O catalyst catalyzed the coupling reactions of aryl halides with phenols and nitrogen hetereocycles to readily give the corresponding products in moderate to excellent yields. A rapid, sensitive, and practical QuEChERS method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 chemical adjuvant residues in samples of fruits (apple, nectarine, grape) and vegetables (tomato, cucumber, spinach). All target compounds were separated in less than 16 min. Samples were extracted with acetonitrile, and the types of extraction salt and cleanup sorbent were optimized. The optimized method was validated by evaluating the linearity, accuracy, precision, and matrix effect. The recoveries of the 16 pesticides adjuvants ranged from 61.2 to 116.3% with relative standard deviations lower than 11.6%. Limits of detection ranged from 0.21 to 3.02 mu g/kg, and limits of quantification ranged from 0.71 to 10.07 mu g/kg. Finally, the developed method was successfully employed to identify and quantify pesticide adjuvant residues in the analysis of 30 real fruit and vegetable samples.

Electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and large electroactive surface areas are the most important factors in determining the performance of various flexible electrodes in energy storage devices. Herein, a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly-induced metal electrodeposition approach is introduced to prepare a variety of highly porous 3D-current collectors with high flexibility, metallic conductivity, and large surface area. In this study, a few metal nanoparticle (NP) layers are LbL-assembled onto insulating paper for the preparation of conductive paper.
