A series of high-performance organic semiconductors, which are modulated by introducing heteroatoms to rationally control molecular packing and charge carrier transport, have been successfully reported. However, a fundamental physical understanding of the impact of chalcogen atoms on intermolecular interactions between donors and acceptors as well as photophysical process in photovoltaic cells is still lagging. Herein, a detailed investigation on rylene imide-based solar cells is carried out to reveal the role of chalcogen atoms in controlling intermolecular interactions, molecular orientation in bulk and at the donor acceptor interface, and polaron-pair dissociation. Compared to their Se-atom-free assisted counterparts, poly{[4,8-bis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-fluoro-2-thienyl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene2,6-diyl]-alt-[2,5-thiophenediyl[5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4,8-dioxo-4H,8H-benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c’]dithiophene-1,3-diyl]]} (PBDB-TF): selenium-annulated triperylene hexaimide (TPH-Se) bulk heterojunctions preserve face-on orientation and possess smaller domain size, which are partially attributed to the Se center dot center dot center dot O van der Waals contacts between the acceptor and polymer chain. This feature enables PBDB-TF:TPH-Se interfaces with enhanced pi-orbital overlap, improved charge transfer, a narrowed charge transfer band, and suppressed polaron-pair binding energy. Consequently, all of the Se-containing solar cells investigated in this manuscript exhibit higher short-circuit current densities and conversion efficiencies than those in Se-atom-free devices. Our results reveal an important molecular design strategy for high-performance rylene imide-based acceptors: efficiently improving the electronic interactions at the D-A interface to increase polaron-pair dissociation and suppress geminate recombination.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), a promising strategy for converting electricity to value-added H-2 fuel, is a key half reaction of the overall water splitting. However, HER is suffering from the sluggish kinetics in alkaline. We here demonstrate a highly efficient catalyst for alkaline HER via surface and interface engineering of RhOOH nanosheets (NSs). The surface structure of RhOOH NSs can be precisely tuned by altering the cyclic voltammogram cycles (CVs) in the activation process, leading to the formation of strongly synergized RhOOH/Rh interface for boosted HER activity in alkaline. The optimized catalyst exhibits a promising alkaline HER performance with overpotential of 18 mV at current density of 10 mA center dot cm(2) and Tafel slope of 19.3 mV center dot dec(-1) in 1 M KOH, which surpasses the commercial Pt/C, Rh NSs/C and RhOOH NSs/C. Detailed experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the synergy between RhOOH and Rh significantly promotes the H2O adsorption/ dissociation to form Had and the Had desorption to produce H-2.

Optical tissue clearing using dibenzyl ether (DBE) or BABB (1 part benzyl alcohol and 2 parts benzyl benzoate) is easy in application and allows deep-tissue imaging of a wide range of specimens. A hydrogen bond (HB) is an essential interaction in countless phenomena, regulating the chemistry of life. HBs are characterized by two features, strength and directionality, with a high degree of heterogeneity across different chemical groups. These characteristics are dependent on the electronic configuration of the atoms involved in the interaction, which, in turn, is influenced strongly by the local molecular environment. Studies based on the analysis of HB in the solid phase, such as X-ray crystallography, suffer from significant biases due to packing forces. These will tend to better describe strong HBs at the expenses of weak ones, which will be either distorted or under-represented. Using quantum mechanics (QM), we calculated interaction energies for about a hundred acceptors and donors in a rigorously defined set of geometries. We performed 180,000 independent QM calculations, covering all relevant angular components, mapping strength and directionality in a context free from external biases, with both single-site and cooperative HBs. By quantifying directionality, we show that there is no correlation with strength; therefore, these two components need to be addressed separately. Results demonstrate that there are very strong HB acceptors (e.g., dimethyl sulfoxide) with nearly isotropic interactions and weak ones (e.g., thioacetone) with a sharp directional profile. Similarly, groups can have comparable directional propensity but be very distant in the strength spectrum (e.g., thioacetone and pyridine). Results provide a new perspective on the way HB directionality is described, with implications for biophysics and molecular recognition that ultimately can influence chemical biology, protein engineering, and drug design.

A tricomponent catalyst comprising titanium tetrachloride, triisobutyl aluminum and diphenyl ether is developed for the highly cis-1,4-selective polymerization of isoprene. The influence of the content of diphenyl ether and its complexation order on polymerization, microstructure and performance of polyisoprene are studied. The polyisoprene synthesized presents high monomer conversion (91-99%). With the increasing of diphenyl ether content, intrinsic viscosity and viscosity-average molecular weight of polyisoprene increase. The molar percentage of cis-1,4-unit is almost unaffected by diphenyl ether and different complexation sequence. The polyisoprene reveals comparable T-g (-61.31 degrees C) and mechanical strengths (11.14MPa, 667%) to commercially available LHIR-80 synthesized with neodymium. However, the viscosity and viscosity-average molecular weight of the former are lower than that of the latter, which avails the processability and maintains excellent mechanical properties.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widespread persistent organic pollutants (POPs) because of their extensive use in diverse electronic products, which have posed great threats to human health and ecosystem. In this study, a total of 54 soil samples were collected from an e-waste recycling area in Tianjin, northern China for analyzing the occurrence and distribution of 14 PBDE congeners. The concentrations of BDE 209, Sigma 13PBDEs and E14PBDEs in the soils from Ziya e-waste recycling area were 2.9-2666 ng/g dw (dry weight) (average 90 ng/g dw), 3.0-41 ng/g dw (average 13 ng/g dw) and 5.9-2699 ng/g dw (average 103 ng/g dw), respectively. The Sigma 14PBDEs concentration showed a dramatic decrease from the central area to the surrounding area. Generally, PBDEs in the northern part showed higher levels than the southern part of the e-waste recycling area due to the wind direction in Tianjin. Deep soil was less polluted by PBDEs, which largely comes from the deposition, migration and infiltration of PBDEs in the surface soils. Overall, PBDEs level in the studied area was much lower than some typical e-waste recycling areas in south China, such as Guiyu and Qingyuan, but significantly higher than the non-e-waste recycling areas. BDE 209, BDE 138 and BDE 28 were the three dominant PBDE congeners in the soil. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that the commercial penta-BDEs and deca-BDE could be considered as the main sources of PBDEs pollution in this region. Redundancy analysis (RDA) suggested that the local PBDEs sources rather than soil properties influenced the PBDEs distribution in Ziya e-waste recycling area. This study systematically revealed the occurrence and distribution of PBDEs in soils from the biggest established circular economy park in northern China.

Despite the introduction of restrictive regulations in the USA and the European Union, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are still found in various types of environmental and biological samples at significant concentration levels. The presence of these persistent organic pollutants in the environment raises important issues because of their negative impact on immunological and neurological systems, and on the hormonal balances in living organisms. From the analytical point of view, the final determination of PBDEs would entail substantial challenges, because it would necessitate conducting the pre-concentration of analytes, or sample clean up. The aim of the present study is to demonstrate the analytical application potential of developed dummy molecularly imprinted polymers as solid-phase extraction sorbents for the selective recognition of low-mass PBDEs. The 4,4′-dihydroxydiphenyl ether was employed as a dummy template of low-mass PBDEs. The developed types of the sorption materials were used in the sample preparation stage of the analytical procedure to determine the PBDE-47 and PBDE-99 levels in selected representatives of environmental samples reference materials of soil and bottom sediments. The recovery values of PBDE-47 and PBDE-99 from the studied solid samples ranged from 60% to 87%, depending on the applied DMIPs type.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an approved modality for the treatment of various types of maligancies and diseased states. However, most of the available photosensitizers (PS) are highly hydrophobic, which limits their solubility and dispersion in biological fluids and can lead to self-quenching and sub-optimal therapeutic efficacy. In this study, chlorin e6 (Ce6)-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) nanoclusters (Ce6-SCs) were prepared via an oil-in-water emulsion. The physical chemical properties of the Ce6-SCs were systematically evaluated. Dual-mode imaging and PDT was subsequently performed in tumor-bearing mice. Chlorin e6 is capable of solubilizing hydrophobic SPION into stable, water-soluble nanoclusters without the use of any additional amphiphiles or carriers. The method is reproducible and the Ce6-SCs are highly stable under physiological conditions. The Ce6-SCs have an average diameter of 92 nm and low polydispersity (average PDI < 0.2). Encapsulation efficiency of both Ce6 and SPION is approximate to 100%, and the total Ce6 payload can be as high as 56% of the total weight (Ce6 + Fe). The Ce6-SCs localize within tumors via enhanced permeability and retention and are detectable by magnetic resonance (MR) and optical imaging. Studies of environmentally benign catalytic methods are of great value in modern chemical synthesis, especially the chemo-selective construction of chemical bonds under green conditions. This work elucidates such preferential synthesis of C-N bond over C-O bond via selective N-arylation of 3-aminophenols using 1,3-bis-[2-hydroxyphenyl] imidazolium chloride (IHPHCl) and copper iodide as catalyst (1 mol %) in aqueous medium. Presence of chelating group (-OH) on IHPHCl enhances N-selectivity. Overall this is a simple and green method for selective N-arylation of 3-aminophenols with good substrate scope and yields (60-88 %). GC-MS, HRMS and other spectroscopic techniques were utilised in detailing the kinetics and mechanistic aspects.

This work deals with the synthesis of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in different solvents and their structural characterization for better understanding the oxygen donor solvent/zirconium precursor/NPs structure relationships. By selecting solvents over their capacity to produce different crystalline states from alkalinized zirconium alkoxide, spherical nanoparticles with a size of about 1.3-3 nm and a narrow size distribution were elaborated using a nonaqueous solvothermal sol-gel route. Conventional X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the average structure and crystallite size of the nanoparticles. Well-crystallized and single-phased nanoparticles with average monoclinic and tetragonal structure were obtained with benzaldehyde and benzyl alcohol, respectively, and a much distorted structure was observed for the synthesis in anisole. The atomic pair distribution functions (PDF) of the samples were also analyzed to access the local structure of the nanoparticles. The PDF of the benzaldehyde-prepared sample is consistent with the monoclinic structure. However, the local structure of nanoparticles synthesized with benzyl alcohol does not fully conform to the tetragonal structure observed by XRD, but exhibits monoclinic-like distortions. Lastly, the anisole-prepared nanoparticles present large structural distortions at the medium range and monoclinic local structural features. The restructuring of this last sample was studied by post-treatments in different solvents and leads to the expression of the tetragonal polymorph. Moreover, it seems that the main structural features are obtained in the early stages of the nanoparticles’ formation.
