The dependence of the selective oxidation catalytic activity of Au-Pd supported on titanate nanotubes on the catalyst preparation method has been investigated. The most active Au-Pd/Ti-NT catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol is shown to be that prepared using colloidal synthesis and immobilization with PVA as a stabilizer, which has markedly superior catalytic activity compared to catalysts prepared by deposition-precipitation, adsorption, and dry impregnation methods. Au-Pd NPs stabilized by graphene oxide sheets and immobilized on Ti-NT has also been studied and while not optimum shows promising catalytic activity. The superior catalytic activity of the catalysts prepared by colloidal synthesis is attributed to the high metal dispersion on the external surfaces of Ti-NT, the narrow particle size distribution, and the high degree of Au-Pd alloying. This work also demonstrates that in the adsorption method of preparation using HAuCl4.3H(2)O and PdCl2 precursors, the uptake of Pd ions in solution by Ti-NT is proportional to the sodium content in Ti-NT, which implies that Na is involved in an ion-exchange reaction with Pd ions.

Comprehensive and updated information about polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in surface sediments from Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, is rather scarce. In this study, concentrations and profiles of 209 PCBs, 41 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 2,2 ‘,4,4 ‘,5,5 ‘-hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), 1,2-bis(2,4,6tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE), and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) were determined in sediment samples collected from the Red River and some inner-city rivers of Hanoi. Concentrations (ng/g dry weight, median and range) of pollutants decreased in the order: DBDPE (28; not detected ND – 59) approximate to PCBs (27; 1.7-50) > PBDEs (23; 0.20-61) > HBCD (1.2; ND – 5.2) > BTBPE (0.46; ND – 3.6) > BB-153 (0.004; ND – 0.014) > PBEB (ND). Pollutant levels in the inner-city river sediments were about one to two orders of magnitude higher than those measured in the Red River main stream sediments. Tri-to hexa-CBs are major homologs but detailed profiles vary between individual samples, reflecting source and/or seasonal variations. CB-11 and CB-209 were found at higher proportions in sediments than in technical PCB mixtures, suggesting their novel sources from pigments. Deca-BDE and DBDPE are the most predominant BFRs with an increasing trend predicted for DBDPE. A preliminary ecological risk assessment was conducted for these pollutants in sediments. Total PCBs and deca-BDE in a few inner-city river sediments may exhibit adverse effects on benthic organisms, but no serious risk was estimated in general.

Nanocasting is a convenient way for preparing highly porous, nanostructured soft materials. Mesoporous polymer nanocasts have been reported for over a decade, however, several aspects remain to be explored further. To do so, we report a comprehensive investigation of the physicochemical characteristics of high surface area functional organic polymers and copolymers obtained by nanocasting. Divinylbenzene, styrene and chloromethyl styrene were selectively polymerized within the pores of mesoporous SBA-15 or KIT-6 silicas. Following template removal, the resulting materials were characterized. The nanocast mesoporous polymers were also modified to introduce functional groups. The success of the functionalization was assessed analytically and by model catalytic tests. The study points to the advantages of the hard templating method for structuring organic materials but also its limitations.

The cleavage of C-O linkages in aryl ethers in biomass-derived lignin compounds without hydrogenation of the aromatic rings is a major challenge for the production of sustainable mono-aromatics. Conventional strategies over the heterogeneous metal catalysts require the addition of homogeneous base additives causing environmental problems. Herein, we propose a heterogeneous Ru/C catalyst modified by Br atoms for the selective direct cleavage of C-O bonds in diphenyl ether without hydrogenation of aromatic rings reaching the yield of benzene and phenol as high as 90.3 % and increased selectivity to mono-aromatics (97.3 vs. 46.2 % for initial Ru) during depolymerization of lignin. Characterization of the catalyst indicates selective poisoning by Br of terrace sites over Ru nanoparticles, which are active in the hydrogenation of aromatic rings, while the defect sites on the edges and corners remain available and provide higher intrinsic activity in the C-O bond cleavage.

Hydrothermal treatment of gadolinium nitrate and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) afforded a new metal-organic framework compound, {[Gd-4(NDC)(6)(H2O)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O}n(1). Compound 1 has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, therrmogravimetric analysis (TGA) and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. It is crystallized in the monoclinic system with the P2(1)/n space group. Four crystallographically distinct Gd (III) centres are interconnected with each other through bridged carboxylato oxygen atoms and water molecules to form tetranuclear secondary building units, which are further connected through the carboxylato ligand and the network propagates along the crystallographic ac plane to form a 2D structure. Subsequent reinforcement from the remaining carboxylato oxygen atoms gives rise to a robust 3D framework structure. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrates that compound 1 is fairly stable after dehydration under a nitrogen atmosphere. Notably, compound 1 is capable of catalyzing the O-arylation reaction efficiently between substituted phenols and bromoarene under heterogeneous conditions at 80 degrees C to afford unsymmetrical diarylethers. I found the field of Environmental Sciences & Ecology; Public, Environmental & Occupational Health very interesting. Saw the article Alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) in green mussels from the south China sea published in 2020.0. Application In Synthesis of Diphenyl oxide, Reprint Addresses Pan, CG (corresponding author), Guangxi Univ, Sch Marine Sci, Nanning 530004, Peoples R China.. The CAS is 101-84-8. Restrictions of legacy brominated flame retardants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), have resulted in increased usage of alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs). Consequently, AHFRs contamination has caused a major concern in the scientific community. However, there is limited information on their presence in marine mussels. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels collected from 22 locations in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Our results revealed that Sigma AHFRs were ubiquitous in green mussels with concentrations in the range of 1.08-7.71 ng/g lipid weight (lw). Among target AHFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), decabromodiphenyl (DBDPE) and dechlorane plus (DP) were predominant with their mean values of 1.19, 1.00 and 0.82 ng/g lw, respectively. There were negligible stereoisomer enrichments of DP in green mussels based on f(anti) values, indicating a limited bioaccumulation and metabolism of DP in green mussels. In comparison with other locations, concentrations of the AHFRs in green mussels determined here were at moderate levels. Additionally, there were significant linear relationships between some AHFRs (e.g., HBB and PBEB), suggesting their similar commercial applications and sources in the environment. The estimated daily intakes of AHFRs through consumption of green mussels by the local population in South China were 0.05-0.14 ng/kg body weight/day and 0.17-0.44 ng/kg body weight/day based on the mean and 95th concentrations, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to report AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels.

This study investigates the geometric and electronic properties of selected BFRs in their ground (S-0) and first singlet excited (S-1) states deploying methods of the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). We estimate the effect of the S-0 -> S-1 transition on the elongations of the C-Br bond, identify the frontier molecular orbitals involved in the excitation process and compute partial atomic charges for the most photoreactive bromine atoms. The bromine atom attached to an who position in HBB (with regard to C-C bond; 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexabromobiphenyl), TBBA (with respect to the hydroxyl group; 2,2′,6,6′-tetrabromobisphenol A), HBDE and BTBPE (in reference to C-O linkage; 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexabromodiphenylether and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane, respectively) bears the highest positive atomic charge. This suggests that, these positions undergo reductive debromination reactions to produce lower brominated molecules. Debromination reactions ensue primarily in the aromatic compounds substituted with the highest number of bromine atoms owing to the largest stretching of the C-Br bond in the first excited state. The analysis of the frontier molecular orbitals indicates that, excitations of BFRs proceed via pi ->pi*, or pi ->sigma* or n ->sigma* electronic transitions. The orbital analysis reveals that, the HOMO-LUMO energy gap (EH-L) for all investigated brominesubstituted aromatic molecules falls lower (1.85-4.91 eV) than for their non-brominated analogues (3.39-8.07 eV), in both aqueous and gaseous media. The excitation energies correlate with the EH-L values. The excitation energies and EH-L values display a linear negative correlation with the number of bromine atoms attached to the molecule. Spectral analysis of the gaseous-phase systems reveals that, the highly brominated aromatics endure lower excitation energies and exhibit red shifts of their absorption bands in comparison to their lower brominated congeners. We attained a satisfactory agreement between the experimentally measured absorption peak (lambda(max)) and the theoretically predicted oscillator strength (lambda(max)) for the UV-Vis spectra. This study further confirms that, halogenated aromatics only absorb light in the UV spectral region and that effective photodegradation of these pollutants requires the presence of photocatalysts.

Purpose: To describe factors (demographics and clinical characteristics) that predict patients who are at an increased risk of adverse events or unplanned return visits to a health-care facility following discharge direct to home (DDH) from intensive care units (ICUs). Methods: Prospective cohort study of all adult patients who survived their stay in our medical-surgical-trauma ICU between February 2016 and 2017 and were discharged directly home. Patients were followed for 8 weeks postdischarge. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with adverse events or unplanned return visits to a health-care facility following DDH from ICU. Results: A total of 129 DDH patients were enrolled and completed the 8-week follow-up. We identified 39 unplanned return visits (URVs). There was 0% mortality at 8 weeks postdischarge. Eight potential predictors of hospital URVs (P< .2) were identified in the univariable analysis: prior substance abuse (odds ratio [OR] of URV of 2.50 [95% confidence interval: 1.08-5.80], hepatitis (OR: 6.92 [1.68-28.48]), sepsis (OR: 11.03 [1.19-102.29]), admission nine equivalents of nursing manpower score (NEMS) <24 (OR: 2.28 [1.03-5.04], no fixed address (OR: 22.9 [1.2-437.3]), ICU length of stay (LOS) <2 days (OR: 2.95 [1.28-6.78]), home discharge within London, Ontario (OR: 2.44 [1.00-5.92]), and left against medical advice (AMA; OR: 6.06 [2.04-17.98]). Conclusions: Our study identified 8 covariates that were potential predictors of URV: prior substance abuse, hepatitis, sepsis, admission NEMS <24, no fixed address, ICU LOS <2 days, home discharge within London, Ontario, and left AMA. The practice of direct discharges home from the ICU would benefit from adequately powered multicenter study in order to construct a clinical prediction model (that would require further testing and validation). The increasing risk of fossil fuels depletion due to surging energy demand has accelerated the search of alternative renewable sources. Lignin, one of the major components of lignocellulosic biomass, is the only abundant renewable natural resource for aromatic compounds. In this work, the effects of metals and process parameters were discussed via the catalytic hydrogenolysis of beta-O-4 lignin model compound, 2-phenethyl phenyl ether. The best results were obtained over Rh/Nb2O5 with an overall conversion of 99.3% and exceptional selectivity of 98.9% to aromatic products when the hydrogenolysis was carried out at 260 degrees C and 0.1 MPa H-2 for 4 h. The high efficiency is mainly attributed to the cooperation between Rh and NbOx at the perimeter sites, in which Rh particles are responsible for the dissociation of H-2 and NbOx for activating CeO bonds. With respect to depolymerize of ash wood lignin, the liquid products were mostly aromatics over Rh/Nb2O5 under 0.1 MPa H-2. The results achieved in this work provide a promising prospect towards valorization of lignin into production of valuable aromatic compounds under low hydrogen pressure.

Because of the intrinsic advantages, Suzuki coupling reactions have been one of the most popular coupling reactions in organic synthesis, however developing a high-performance heterogeneous catalyst for Suzuki coupling reactions in aqueous media at low temperature (e.g. room temperature) is still a challenge. Herein, a heterogeneous catalyst with coordinated Pd as active site and a designed conjugated phenanthroline based porous polymer (CPP) as support was fabricated. Systematically investigation on CPP support by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that the derived CPP catalyst support owns a porous structure, moderately good surface area (141 m(2)/g) and an excellent thermal stability. As a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of biphenyl derivatives via Suzuki coupling, Pd/CPP achieves an excellent catalytic performance and recycling ability towards Suzuki reaction of various reactants at room temperature in ethanol-water medium.
