Annual air samples were collected at various sites in the Fildes Peninsula, West Antarctica from December 2010 to January 2018 using XAD-2 resin passive air samplers to investigate concentrations, temporal trends and potential sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Antarctic air. Relatively low concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (Sigma(19)PCBs: 1.5-29.7 pg/m(3)), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (Sigma 12PBDEs: 0.2-2.9 pg/m(3)) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) (Sigma(13)OCPs: 101-278 pg/m(3)) were found in the atmosphere of West Antarctica. PCB-11, BDE-47 and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were the predominant compounds in the atmosphere. The concentrations of PCBs, HCHs, DDTs and endosulfans were found to show decreasing temporal trends, whereas uniform temporal trends were observed for HCB. The atmospheric half-life values for PCBs, HCHs, DDTs and endosulfans in Antarctic air were estimated for the first time, using regressions of the natural logarithm of the concentrations versus the number of years, obtaining the values of 2.0, 2.0, 2.4 and 1.2 year, respectively. An increasing ratio of alpha-HCH/gamma-HCH indicated long residence time for alpha-HCH and possible transformation of gamma-HCH to alpha-HCH in the atmosphere. The ratios of p,p’-DDT/p,p’-DDE were mostly lower than unity in this study, which could be attributed to aged sources. It was found that long-range atmospheric transport was still considered to be the main contributing factor to the atmospheric levels of the POPs in West Antarctica whereas the contribution of human activities at the Chinese Great Wall Station was minor. The results of this study give a view on the most recent temporal trends and provide new insights regarding the occurrence of various POPs in the Antarctic atmosphere. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Marine plastic debris, including microplastics (<5 mm in size), comprises a suite of chemical ingredients and sorbed chemical contaminants. Thus, microplastics are a potential, and debated, source of anthropogenic chemicals for bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Several studies have investigated the role of microplastics as a vector of contaminants to marine organisms via modeling exercises, laboratory experiments, and field studies. Here, we examined relationships among chemical contaminants and microplastics in lanternfish (family Myctophidae), an important link in marine food webs, from the North Pacific Ocean as a case study from the field. We compared the body burden of several chemical groups (bisphenol A [BPA], nonylphenol [4-NP], octylphenol [4n-OP], alkylphenol ethoxylates [APEs], pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], and polybrominated diphenyl ethers [PBDEs]) in fish caught within and outside the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre where plastic is known to accumulate. We also tested whether there was a relationship between chemical concentrations in fish and plastic density at each sampling location. Mean concentrations of common plastic constituents (BPA, 4-NP, 4n-OP, APEs, and total PBDEs) were comparable between myctophids collected within and outside the North Pacific Gyre. Pesticides were higher in lanternfish caught outside the gyre and were associated with lower plastic density. Total PCBs were also higher in fish outside the gyre. In contrast, lower chlorinated PCB congeners were higher in fish residing in the accumulation zone and were correlated with higher plastic density. This finding is consistent with other studies demonstrating an association between lower chlorinated PCBs and plastics in biota and suggests that microplastic may be a transport mechanism for some chemicals in nature. A silver(i)-mediated oxidative N-H/C(sp(3))-H coupling of NH-azoles with ethers has been developed. Various substrates were well N-alkylated in this methodology and the corresponding desired products were given in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the late-stage alkylation of bioactive molecules was achieved. This protocol involved C(sp(3))-N bond formation via a radical pathway generated in the presence of low cost and readily available heptafluoroisopropyl iodide (i-C3F7I). Generally, this reaction features excellent functional group compatibility, broad substrate scope, good regioselectivity, and fast access to pharmaceuticals such as SQ 22536.

Heavy metals and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous pollutants at electronic waste (e-waste) contaminated sites, their individual impacts on soil microbial community has attracted wide attention, however, limited research is available on the combined effects of heavy metals and PBDEs on microbial community of a-waste contaminated. Therefore, combined effects of heavy metals and PBDEs on the microbial community in the e-waste contaminated soil were investigated in this study. Samples were collected from Ziya e-waste recycling area in Tianjin, northern China, and the soil microbial communities were then analyzed by the high-throughput MiSeq 16S rRNA sequencing to assess the effects of soil properties, heavy metals, and PBDEs on the soil microbial community. Candidatus Nitrososphaera, Steroidobacter and Kaistobacter were the dominant microbial species in the soils. Similar microbial metabolic functions, including amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and membrane transport, were found in all soil samples. Redundancy analysis and variation partition analysis revealed that the microbial community was mainly influenced by PBDEs (including BDE 183, BDE 99, BDE 100 and BDE 154) in horizontal soil samples. However, TN, biomass, BDE 100, BDE 99 and BDE 66 were the major drivers shaping the microbial community in vertical soil samples.

The dependence of polymer film transparency on different kinds of planar orientations of nanoporous-crystalline (NC) phases of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide (PPO) is described. The two polymers exhibit opposite behavior: film transparency is improved for sPS and PPO by orientations of the chain axes of the NC phases being parallel (c(parallel to)) and perpendicular (c(perpendicular to)) to the film plane, respectively. This behavior can be rationalized by the negative and positive birefringence of sPS and PPO chains, respectively. In fact, to maximize transparency, the refractive index of the NC phase along the perpendicular to the film plane has to be increased to come closer to that of the corresponding amorphous phase. This can be pursued by controlling the orientation of the NC phases and hence of the associated refractive index ellipsoids.

The lack of Nationally Certified Reference Materials for the calibration of DSC equipment in the sub-ambient range has been addressed by the introduction of a Certified Reference Material of purified cyclohexane by the National Metrology Institute of Japan. This sample, in conjunction with the CRM material phenyl salicylate and the ITS-90 fixed point material mercury, has enable a DSC-thermomicroscopy system to be accurately calibrated over the temperature range 90 degrees C to 50 degrees C. The DSC has then been used to measure values for the solid-solid transitions in the potential Certified Reference Materials ammonium sulphate, adamantane and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, which have the advantage of being thermally stable and easy to handle, and for the melting point of diphenyl ether. In addition, the effect of temperature cycling on these materials has been investigated.

An article Identification and Migration Studies of Photolytic Decomposition Products of UV-Photoinitiators in Food Packaging WOS:000496242300177 published article about SAFETY in [Scarsella, Joseph B.; Zhang, Nan; Hartman, Thomas G.] Rutgers State Univ, Dept Food Sci, 65 Dudley Rd, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 USA in 2019, Cited 19. UV-curable inks, coatings, and adhesives are being increasingly used in food packaging systems. When exposed to UV energy, UV-photoinitiators (PI’s) present in the formulations produce free radicals which catalyze polymerization of monomers and pre-polymers into resins. In addition to photopolymerization, other free radical reactions occur in these systems resulting in the formation of chemically varied photolytic decomposition products, many of which are low molecular weight chemical species with high migration potential. This research conducted model experiments in which 24 commonly used PI’s were exposed to UV-energy at the typical upper limit of commercial UV-printing press conditions. UV-irradiated PI’s were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and electrospray-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) in order to identify photolytic decomposition products. Subsequently, migration studies of 258 UV-cure food packaging samples were conducted using GC-MS; PI’s and photolytic decomposition products were found in nearly all samples analyzed. One hundred-thirteen photolytic decomposition products were identified. Eighteen intact PI’s and 21 photolytic decomposition products were observed as migrants from the 258 samples analyzed, and these were evaluated for frequency of occurrence and migratory concentration range. The most commonly observed PI’s were 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone and benzophenone. The most commonly observed photolytic decomposition products were 2,4,6-trimethylbenzaldehyde and 1-phenyl-2-butanone. This compilation of PI photolytic decomposition data and associated migration data will aid industry in identifying and tracing non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) in food packaging materials.

Isohexides are versatile carbohydrate-based building blocks for designing biodegradable polymers with tunable biodegradability and enhanced material properties owing to their unique high structural rigidity and hydrophilicity. However, the limited reactivity and thermal stability of isohexides, especially the isomers with endo-hydroxyl groups, hamper their practical applications. In this work, fully aliphatic copolyesters based on two isohexide stereoisomers, isosorbide (IS) and isomannide (IM), were comparatively synthesized via a mild lipase-catalyzed polymerization [enzymatic polymerization (EP)] technique. The products were obtained with fairly high molecular weights (M-n values: 15,300-31,500 g.mol(-1)), negligible degree of discoloration, and 20-40 degrees C higher thermal stabilities (T-d,T-5% : 335-360 degrees C) compared to those of their counterparts obtained by melt polymerization (MP). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that the endo-OH is preferred to the exo-OH under the EP process having a high hydrogen-bonding frequency with the catalytic site of CALB (lipase immobilized from Candida antarctica, CALB), and it also requires considerably low energy (70-100 kJ.mol(-1)) to form the second tetrahedral transition-state intermediates. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) study further elucidates the interesting influence of the EP process on inducing specific beta-type crystalline structures.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with a face-centered cubic (fcc) structure and two different morphologies (nanospheres and nanoprisms) were synthesized by a facile one-step method. The synthesized Fe3O4 nanospheres and nanoprisms were monocrystalline and separable in a magnetic field. In different volume ratios of oleylamine (OAm) to dibenzyl ether, the sizes of the prepared Fe3O4 NPs ranged from 5 to 21 nm. The OAm amount in the synthesis can significantly control the morphology of Fe3O4 NPs. As the OAm content increased from 10 ml to 30 ml, the faceted nanoprisms shrank while the nanospheres enlarged. At an OAm content of 25 ml, the nanoprisms diminished while more hexagonal and sphere-like particles appeared, implying a critical point of morphology transition from triangle to hexagon. The magnetic properties also depended on the NP morphology and size. The prepared Fe3O4 NPs are promising candidates in medical applications such as magnetic resonance imaging, targeted drug delivery, blood purification, and tumor hyperthermia.
