A total of 11 bacterial strains capable of completely degrading 2-butoxyethanol (2-BE) were isolated from forest soil, a biotrickling filter, a bioscrubber, and activated sludge, and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Eight of these strains belong to the genus Pseudomonas; the remaining three strains are Hydrogenophaga pseudoflava BOE3, Gordonia terrae BOE5, and Cupriavidus oxalaticus BOE300. In addition to 2-BE, all isolated strains were able to grow on 2-ethoxyethanol and 2-propoxyethanol, ethanol, n-hexanol, ethyl acetate, 2-butoxyacetic acid (2-BAA), glyoxylic acid, and n-butanol. Apart from the only gram-positive strain isolated, BOE5, none of the strains were able to grow on the nonpolar ethers diethyl ether, di-n-butyl ether, n-butyl vinyl ether, and dibenzyl ether, as well as on 1-butoxy-2-propanol. Strains H. pseudoflava BOE3 and two of the isolated pseudomonads, Pseudomonas putida BOE100 and P. vancouverensis BOE200, were studied in more detail. The maximum growth rates of strains BOE3, BOE100, and BOE200 at 30 degrees C were 0.204 h(-1) at 4 mM, 0.645 h(-1) at 5 mM, and 0.395 h(-1) at 6 mM 2-BE, respectively. 2-BAA, n-butanol, and butanoic acid were detected as potential metabolites during the degradation of 2-BE. These findings indicate that the degradation of 2-BE by the isolated gram-negative strains proceeds via oxidation to 2-BAA with subsequent cleavage of the ether bond yielding glyoxylate and n-butanol. Since Gordonia terrae BOE5 was the only strain able to degrade nonpolar ethers like diethyl ether, the degradation pathway of 2-BE may be different for this strain.

A hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with an adjustable mesoporous size is required for many chemical processes including the biorefining of big biomass compounds. In this research, a simple and high-efficiency hard template method has been successfully developed by adopting carbon nanoparticles obtained from carbonation of polyethylene oxide and urea. The abundant -C-O-C- groups on the surface of carbon nanoparticles provide the high hydrophilicity (from -C-O-C- to -C-O-H) in the alkaline synthetic gel solution, which promotes the synthesis of hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite and the aluminum condensation in the silica framework to improve the Bronsted acidity. The as-synthesized hierarchical zeolites exhibited two sets of channel systems: micropores (similar to 0.55 nm) are from the MFI framework network, and mesopores (similar to 12.5 and similar to 34.5 nm) result from carbon nanoparticles of 10-40 nm in size, respectively. The hierarchical ZSM-5 with minimized extraframework aluminum species showed catalytic performance with high ethanol conversion (100%) and high stability (lifetime above 30 h) in the ethanol to olefins conversion. Importantly, the diffusion efficiency in ZSM-5 with mesoporous size was remarkably improved, compared to the catalyst with mesoporous size similar to 12.5 nm. As the benzylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol, the ZSM-5 (similar to 34.5 nm) sample showed the highest conversion in benzyl alcohol (82.0%) and selectivity in 2-benzyl-1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (74.3%).

As the use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and the entire class of organohalogen flame retardants, is declining, the use of organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRO is increasing. In this paper, we ask whether OPFRs are a better choice than PBDEs. To address this question, we compared OPFRs with PBDEs for a wide range of properties. Exposure to OPFRs is ubiquitous in people and in outdoor and indoor environments, and OPFRs are now often found at higher levels compared to PBDE peak exposure levels. Furthermore, data from toxicity testing, epidemiological studies, and risk assessments all suggest that there are health concerns at current exposure levels for both halogenated and nonhalogenated OPFRs. Obtaining the scientific evidence needed for regulation of OPFRs can take many years. Given the large number of OPFRs in use, manufacturers can move toward healthier and safer products by developing innovative ways to reduce the risk of fire for electronics enclosures, upholstered furniture, building materials, and other consumer products without adding flame retardant chemicals.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) triggered by ultrasound (US) has attracted increasing attention owing to its abilities to overcome critical limitations including low tissue-penetration depth and phototoxicity in photodynamic therapy. Herein, the design of a new type of sonosensitizer is revealed, namely, ultrasmall oxygen-deficient bimetallic oxide MnWOX nanoparticles, for multimodal imaging-guided enhanced SDT against cancer. As-made MnWOX nanoparticles with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) modification show high physiological stability and biocompatibility. Interestingly, such MnWOX-PEG nanoparticles exhibit highly efficient US-triggered production of O-1(2) and center dot OH, higher than that of previously reported sonosensitizers (e.g., protoporphyrin IX and titanium dioxide), because the oxygen-deficient structure of MnWOX serves as an electron trap site to prevent electron-hole recombination. The glutathione depletion capability of MnWOX-PEG can also further favor SDT-triggered cancer cell killing. With efficient tumor homing as illustrated by computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, MnWOX-PEG enables effective destruction of mouse tumors under US stimulation. After accomplishing its therapeutic functions, MnWOX-PEG can be metabolized by the mouse body without any long-term toxicity. Herein, a new type of sono-sensitizing agent with high SDT efficacy, multimodal imaging functions, and rapid clearance is presented, an agent which is promising for noninvasive SDT cancer treatment.

The design of novel materials to use simultaneously in an ocular system for driven therapeutics and wound healing is still challenging. Here, we produced nanocomposites of tungsten disulfide carriers with spherical cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) as core inside a cubic iron oxide NPs shell (WS2/s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that 10 nm s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4 NPs were attached on the WS2 sheet surfaces. The cytotoxicity of the WS2 sheets and nanocomposites were evaluated on bovine cornea endothelial cells (BCECs) using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay for a duration of three days. The MTT assay results showed low toxicity of the WS2 sheets on BCECs by 67% cell viability at 100 mu g/mL in 24 h, while the nanocomposites show 50% cell viability in the same conditions. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of nanocomposites revealed the excellent T-2-weighted imaging with an r(2) contrast of 108 mM(-1) S-1. The in vitro photothermal therapy based on WS2 sheets and WS2/s-CoFe2O4 @c-Fe3O4 nanocomposites using 808 nm laser showed that the maximum thermal energy dispatched in medium at different applied power densities (1200 mw, 1800, 2200, 2600 mW) was for 0.1 mg/mL of the sample solution. The migration assay of BCECs showed that the wound healing was approximately 20% slower for the cell exposed by nanocomposites compared with the control (no exposed BCECs). We believe that WS2/s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4 nanocomposites have a synergic effect as photothermal therapy agents for eye diseases and could be a target in an ocular system using MRI.

A method based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed for the simultaneous determination of 29 adjuvants in pesticide formulations. The pesticide formulation was diluted with methanol, and the supernatant was filtered through a 0. 22- tim membrane. After separation on a VF-1701MS column, the analytes were detected by mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode and quantified using the external standard method. Good linearities were obtained for the 29 pesticide adjuvants in the linear range of 6. 2 -400. 0 mg/L, with correlation coefficients (R-2) larger than 0. 99. The limits of quantification (LOQs) were 4. 4-439. 1 mg/kg. The average recoveries in emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and soluble concentrate (SL) samples ranged from 82. 0% to 111. 9% and from 82. 6% to 112. 9%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs, n = 6) ranged from 0. 4% to 7. 2% and from 0. 3% to 8. 2%, respectively. Finally, 110 pesticide formulation samples were detected; 11 kinds of pesticide adjuvants, including phenol, N-methyl pyrrolidone, dichloromethane, and n hexane, were detected in 28 samples with contents ranging from 0. 05% to 15. 65%. The proposed method is simple, sensitive, and accurate, and is suitable for the simultaneous determination of the 29 adjuvants in pesticide formulations.

Electron-rich arenes are oxidatively photochlorinated in the presence of catalytic amounts of bromide ions, visible light, and 4CzIPN as organic photoredox catalyst. The substrates are brominated in situ in a first photoredox-catalyzed oxidation step, followed by a photocatalyzed ipso-chlorination, yielding the target compounds in high ortho/para regioselectivity. Dioxygen serves as a green and convenient terminal oxidant. The use of aqueous hydrochloric acid as the chloride source reduces the amount of saline by-products.

The development of an efficient solid catalyst for Friedel-Crafts (FC) reactions is of great importance to organic synthetic chemistry. Herein, we reported the hafnium-doped mesoporous silica catalyst Hf/SBA-15 and its first use for Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions. Catalysts with different Si/Hf ratios were prepared and characterized, among which Hf/SBA-15(20) (Si/Hf = 20:1) was the most active catalyst, offering up to 99.1% benzylated product under mild reaction conditions. The influences of reaction conditions on the product were systematically investigated and compared. Pyridine-IR characterization of the catalyst showed that Lewis acid formed the primary active sites for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization revealed that the electron shift from the Hf center to the silica framework resulted in a more active Lewis metal center for FC reactions. Moreover, the catalyst was successfully applied to the alkylation reaction with different alcohols and aromatic compounds. Finally, the Hf/SBA-15(20) catalyst also showed good recyclability in the recycling runs, demonstrating its high potential of being used for large scale FC reactions in the industry.

In this paper, the catalytic behaviour of carbonaceous system (Ccs) functionalized with -SO3H groups were studied in the etherification of refined (Gly) and crude glycerol (GlyC), with benzyl alcohol (BA). This Ccs was obtained by a synthetic method with low energetic cost in only 24 h. Its catalytic activity and selectivity were studied varying the catalyst percentage (2.5, 5 and 10 wt.%), the initial reactant molar ratio and temperature (between 80 and 120 degrees C). A very good catalytic performance was achieved (97 % conversion after 360 min of reaction), at 120 degrees C, Gly:BA = 3:1 and 10 wt.% of Ccs. The high activity can be attributed to high acid site density (6.4 mmol H+/g), that also allowed us to working at lower reaction temperature (100 degrees C) and with less catalyst concentration (2.5 wt.%), without observing significant loss in BA conversion. Monoether (ME1) was the major product of the reaction with 72 % selectivity. The material can be reused and still gives a notable conversion of BA (about 43 %) after three successive reuses. Finally, the Ccs was active and selective to the desired products in the etherification of crude glycerol (GlyC) derived of biodiesel industry. An important BA conversion (45 %) was obtained only reducing the water content of GlyC and without carrying out any other purification and/or neutralization treatment.

Name: Diphenyl oxide. In 2019.0 ACS APPL MATER INTER published article about NON-FULLERENE ACCEPTORS; TO-ROLL FABRICATION; POLYMER SOLAR-CELLS; RING-FUSION; EFFICIENCY; MODULES; OXYGEN in [Tintori, Francesco; Laventure, Audrey; Welch, Gregory C.] Univ Calgary, Dept Chem, 2500 Univ Dr NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1N4, Canada in 2019.0, Cited 61.0. Herein, we investigate the role of processing solvent additives on the formation of polymer-perylene diimide bulk-heterojunction active layers for organic photo-voltaics using both spin-coating and slot-die coating methods. We compare the effect of 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) and diphenyl ether (DPE) as solvent additives on the aggregation behavior of the non-fullerene acceptor, N-annulated perylene diimide dimer (tPDI(2)N-EH), in neat films and blended films with the benzodithiophene-quinoxaline (BDT-QX, QX-3) donor polymer, processed from toluene in air. DIO processing crystallizes the tPDI(2)N-EH acceptor and leads to the decreased solar cell performance. DPE processing has a more subtle effect on the bulk-heterojunction morphology and leads to an improved solar cell performance. A comparison of the spin-coating vs slot-die coating methods shows that the effect of DPE is prominent for the slot-die coated active layers. While similar device power conversion efficiencies are achieved with active layers coated with both methods (ca. 7.3% vs 6.5%), the use of DPE improves the film quality when the slot-die coating method is employed.
