Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), and unsubstituted/methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs/Me-PAHs) were simultaneously monitored in the air samples collected from Vietnamese urban and vehicular waste processing areas by using polyurethane foam-based passive air sampling (PUF-PAS) method. Concentrations (pg m(-3)) of organic pollutants decreased in the order: PAHs (median 29,000; range 5100-100,000) > Me-PAHs (6000; 1000-33,000) > PCBs (480; 170 -1100) > PBDEs (11; 5.3-86) > NBFRs (0.20; n. d. – 51) > BB-153 (n.d.). The difference in total PCB and PBDE concentrations between the urban and waste processing air samples was not statistically significant. Meanwhile, levels of PAHs, Me-PAHs, benzo [a]pyrene equivalents (BaP-EQs), and toxic equivalents of dioxin-like PCBs (WHO-TEQs) were much higher in the waste processing sites. This is the first report on the abundance of mono- and di-CBs (notably CB-11) in the air from a developing country, suggesting their roles as emerging and ubiquitous air pollutants. Our results have indicated potential sources of specific organic pollutants such as dioxin-like PCBs, PAHs, and Me-PAHs from improper treatment of end-of-life vehicles and other vehicle related materials (e.g., waste oils and rubber tires), as well as current emission of PCBs and PBDEs in the urban area in Vietnam. Further atmospheric monitoring studies should be conducted in this developing country that cover both legacy and emerging contaminants with a focus on areas affected by rapid urbanization and informal waste processing activities. Methyl and phenyl esters of 2 ‘,3 ‘-PhABA and iso-2 ‘,3 ‘-PhABA were prepared for the biological investigation and development of practical applications. These esters exhibited excellent activity in most plant growth inhibitory assays. And, three esters were more efficient than ABA in stomatal closure. The 2 ‘,3 ‘-PhABA analogs and their methyl esters have good stability in hydrolysis assay, and the different lipid solubility and permeability of different esters may be one of the origins of their active selectivity for different plants and physiological processes. Furthermore, in the study of drought tolerance, all four esters had comparable activity to ABA. These results suggest that these esters were potent plant growth regulator (PGR) candidates for anti-drought. The finding that different esters have different selective bioactivity and biophysical properties indicates that these esters not only function as ABA-like PGRs but also have the possibility as potential selective pro-hormone. Lignin depolymerization into its aromatic monomers is necessary for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass, but cleavage of the C-O ether bonds and C-C bonds between the monomers is challenging. In this study, we investigated bond cleavage reactions of benzyl phenyl ether, diphenyl ether, and biphenyl, which served as models for lignin compounds with alpha-O-4, 4-O-5, and 5-5 linkages, respectively, by using various metal catalysts in supercritical water at 673 K and a water density of 0.5 g cm(-3) without added hydrogen gas. Benzyl phenyl ether was decomposed without catalyst. We found that palladium, platinum, and rhodium catalysts supported on carbon showed activity for cleavage of the C-O ether bonds in benzyl phenyl ether and diphenyl ether but not for the bonds between the aromatic units of biphenyl. Using anisole as a model compound, we also found that methoxy groups, which are present in lignin containing coniferyl and sinapyl alcohol monomers, were converted into phenol groups or were decomposed. The reaction conditions described herein have great potential utility for the conversion of lignin, which can be decomposed and dissolved in supercritical water, into valuable aromatic compounds.

Ceria (CeO2) is a technologically promising compound due to a remarkable set of properties. However, the use of ceria also has drawbacks, the most pronounced of which is the material’s poor thermal stability. This property limits the use of ceria-based materials at elevated temperatures, in many technological applications. To overcome this, the addition of TiO2 is proposed. Such addition essentially creates a new material system, namely Ce1-xTixO2. In this work, an array of techniques were employed to determine the thermal stability of this new compound range (X < 0.2). Results show that when nano-sized, TiO(2 )is fully soluble in CeO2 in this range. After heat treatment, however, the material coarsens and the solubility limit decreases to less than 2 at.%. as the compound undergoes significant changes. Herein, in situ generated efficient catalysts were designed for fixation of CO2 to cyclic carbonates under mild conditions. Zinc bromide and N,N-dibenzyl-N,N-dimethylammonium bromide, being proved as active catalyst species, were in situ generated from cheap Zn powder, dimethyl formamide and benzyl bromide, and catalyzed the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and various terminal epoxides in moderate to excellent yields at 80 degrees C and atmospheric pressure of CO2. Here, we have successfully synthesised and purified multifunctional PLGA-based nanoparticles by the co-encapsulation of an anticancer drug (tetrandrine) and a magnetic material (Fe3O4). The obtained Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs had a uniform spherical shape with a particle size of approximately 199nm and a negative surface charge of -18.0mV, displaying a high encapsulation efficiency. Furthermore, TEM studies provided representative images of the purification process of the magnetic nanoparticles with MACS((R)) technology. The MFM and VSM results indicated that both the Fe3O4 NPs and Tet-Fe3O4-PLGA NPs were superparamagnetic. The DSC spectrum demonstrated that Tet was successfully encapsulated within the PLGA-based nanoparticles. Significantly, the release studies revealed NPs had a relatively slower release rate than free Tet after 8h’s initial burst release, which had decreased from 98% to 65% after 24h. In vitro cellular studies revealed that NPs could effectively penetrate into A549 cells and A549 multicellular spheroids to exert cytotoxicity, displaying a significantly high anti-proliferation effect. Moreover, western blot demonstrated that the co-loaded NPs had a higher anticancer activity by injuring lysosomes to activate the mitochondria pathway and induce A549 cell apoptosis. The magnetic characteristics and high anticancer activity support the use of Tet/Fe3O4 co-loaded PLGA-based nanoparticles as a promising strategy in the treatment of lung cancer.

Ammonia (NH3) electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) is an important reaction in direct NH3 fuel cells, NH3 electrolyzer, and NH3-based electrochemical sensors. However, its slow kinetics and structure-sensitive properties require specific electrocatalyst designs. In this study, Ir-decorated N nanocubes are developed as unique surface engineered model catalysts. For the first time, we find that a trace amount of Ir (less than 2%) could increase the AOR activity of N nanocubes by more than twice. Theoretical simulation results also illustrate that the surfacedecorated Ir could lower the energy barrier in the rate determining *NH formation step on N surfaces, thus increasing activity in accordance with experimental findings. Additionally, Ir and Ni(OH)(2)-decorated N nanocubes can significantly improve the durability. Our findings demonstrate the importance of surface engineering in catalyst synthesis and pave the way of advanced electrocatalyst designs for ammonia oxidation and other catalytic reactions.

Electronic waste (E-waste) recycling is a rapidly growing occupation in the USA with the potential for elevated exposure to flame retardants and metals associated with electronic devices. We previously measured polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in plasma from E-waste workers and found them similar to non-E-waste workers. This study focused on structurally related PBDE derivatives, the hydroxylated (OH-PBDEs) and methoxylated (MeO-PBDEs) forms along with metals known to occur in E-waste. Humans can metabolize PBDEs and some MeO-PBDEs into OH-PBDEs, which is a concern due to greater health risks associated with OH-PBDEs. We measured 32 different OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in plasma samples provided by 113 volunteers living in the greater Puget Sound region of Washington State, USA. We measured 14 metals in a subset of 10 E-waste and 10 non-E-waste volunteers. Volunteers were selected based on occupational and dietary habits: work outdoors and consume above average amounts of seafood (outdoor), electronic waste recycling (E-waste) or non-specific indoor occupations (indoor). A two-week food consumption diary was obtained from each volunteer prior to blood sampling. OH-PBDEs were detected in all volunteers varying between 0.27 and 102 ng/g/g-lipid. The MeO-PBDEs were detected in most, but not all volunteers varying between n.d. 60.4 ng/g/g-lipid. E-waste recyclers had OH-PBDE and MeO-PBDE plasma levels that were similar to the indoor group. The outdoor group had significantly higher levels of MeO-PBDEs, but not OH-PBDEs. Comparison of plasma concentrations of BDE-47 with its known hydroxylated metabolites suggested OH-PBDE levels were likely determined by biotransformation and at least two subpopulations identified differing in their apparent rates of OH-PBDE formation. The metals analysis indicated no significant differences between E-waste workers and non-E-waste workers. Waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) contain a high level of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), among which polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are the most widely used additive BFRs. PBDEs are considered to be a type of persistent organic pollutants (POPS). The efficient removal/degradation of PBDEs in waste PCBs is an urgent problem in electronic waste treatment, but the degradation of PBDEs is a great challenge due to their extreme stability and persistence in nature. In this study, a novel management strategy was developed for removal and degradation of PBDEs in waste PCBs by using a simple subcritical methanol (SubCM) process. The results showed that reaction temperature, residence time, solid-to-liquid ratio, and additive NaOH are key factors influencing the removal of PBDEs from waste PCBs. Under optimal conditions (200 degrees C, 60 min, 1:20 g/mL), the removal efficiency of Sigma(8) PBDEs from waste PCBs could reach 91.3% and 98.8% for the proposed process of SubCM and SubCM + NaOH, respectively. When the temperature is below 200 degrees C, highly brominated PBDEs congeners in waste PCBs were degraded into 2,’3,4′,6-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE71) and 2,4,4′-Tribromodiphenyl ether (BDE28) after SubCM treatment. 4-Bromophenyl ether (BDE4) and diphenyl ether were generated by the further debromination of BDE71 and BDE28 with the increase of treatment temperature. The debromination temperature of PBDEs congeners in SubCM could be markedly lowered by adding 4 g/L of NaOH. The complete debromination of PBDEs congeners in waste PCBs could be achieved at 300 degrees C and 250 degrees C for the developed process of SubCM and SubCM + NaOH, respectively. A micro fabricated chip-based wearable air sampler was used to monitor the personnel exposure of volatile chemical concentrations in microenvironments. Six teenagers participated in this study and 14 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including naphthalene, 3-decen-1-ol, hexanal, nonanal, methyl salicylate and limonene gave the highest abundance during routine daily activity. VOC exposure associated with daily activities and the location showed strong agreements with two of the participant’s results. One of these subjects had the highest exposure to methyl salicylate that was supported by the use of a topical analgesic balm containing this compound. Environmental based air quality monitoring followed by the personnel exposure studies provided additional evidence associated to the main locations where the participants traveled. Toluene concentrations observed at a gas station were exceptionally high, with the highest amount observed at 1213.1 ng m(-3). One subject had the highest exposure to toluene and the GPS data showed clear evidence of activities neighboring a gas station. This study shows that this wearable air sampler has potential applications including hazardous VOC exposure monitoring in occupational hazard assessment for certain professions, for example in industries that involve direct handling of petroleum products.
