Advanced chemometric methods, such as fuzzy c-means, a semi-supervised clustering method, and fuzzy discriminant analysis, a robust supervised method, have been successfully applied for characterization and classification of 72 solvents according to the chemical parameters (P’ and x(i)) developed by Snyder. The obtained results (fuzzy partitions) and parameters of the prototypes (robust fuzzy means) clearly demonstrated the efficiency and information power of the advanced fuzzy methods in solvent characterization and classification, and allow a rationale choice of a good solvent or an efficient mixture of solvents in chromatography and other fields. Also, this methodology generates the premises for future investigations using other different properties of solvents.

Ceria (CeO2) is a technologically promising compound due to a remarkable set of properties. However, the use of ceria also has drawbacks, the most pronounced of which is the material’s poor thermal stability. This property limits the use of ceria-based materials at elevated temperatures, in many technological applications. To overcome this, the addition of TiO2 is proposed. Such addition essentially creates a new material system, namely Ce1-xTixO2. In this work, an array of techniques were employed to determine the thermal stability of this new compound range (X < 0.2). Results show that when nano-sized, TiO(2 )is fully soluble in CeO2 in this range. After heat treatment, however, the material coarsens and the solubility limit decreases to less than 2 at.%. as the compound undergoes significant changes. These include solute segregation and phase separation. Finally, the factors that affect compound stability are discussed. Recommanded Product: 101-84-8. The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on electrocatalysts represents a major obstacle in the development of fuel cell technology. A tremendous amount of work has reported the increasing ORR activity for catalysts. Nevertheless, when applied to practical Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA, an assembled stack of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell) configuration, the high-performance catalysts on the rotating disk electrode (RDE) may not display the same high activity as in the lab-scale tests. This led us to reexamine the ORR evaluation based on the RDE technique. With the development of high active electrocatalysts, it may become significant to determine the reasonable kinetic current at a conventional fixed potential approaching the limited current by using the Koutecky-Levich (K-L) technique on RDE for the evaluation of ORR activity. Here we describe such a challenging situation and systematically discuss the proper kinetic region when comparing the ORR activity with the unsuitable potential or Pt loading based on the K-L technique. Furthermore, the rational benchmarking guidelines are given for the evaluation of the ORR electrocatalysts.

A novel ferrierite type zeolite named as IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) with pore sizes of 14 x 12-ring (R) was post synthesized by simply interlayer silylation of lamellar precursor Al-PLS-3 taking 1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclosilone (TMCS) as silane. Its catalytic properties were tested by isomerization/disproportionation of m-xylene, alkylation/acylation of anisole with benzyl alcohol/acetic anhydride. The catalytic performance of IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) was compared with Al-PLS-3 (10 x 8-R) and IEZ-Al-PLS-3(1Si) (12 x 10-R) which were prepared by calcination or silylation using dimethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS) as silane of as made Al-PLS-3 respectively. Since these materials have the same laminates composition, the differences of catalytic performance can be considered as the result of different pore sizes. We also prepared conventional 10-R zeolite ZSM-5 and 12-R zeolite Beta for control experiments. IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) showed even higher catalytic activities than Beta as a result of its enlarged 14-R pore size.

With the aid of direct heating through microwave irradiation in non-aqueous media, nanocrystalline tungsten(vi) oxide is achievable in 30 minutes at 200 degrees C, faster and at a lower temperature than conventional synthesis methods. Forming in a platelet morphology, these particles are as small as 20 nm with a BET surface area of 37 m(2) g(-1) WO3. These nanoplatelets are active for the photocatalytic oxidation of the 1 degrees alcohols benzyl alcohol (rate constant, k of 2.6 x 10(-3) h(-1)) and 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furfural (k of 0.01 h(-1)) using 10 mg of WO3 with 2 mL of 0.250 M substrate in acetonitrile and a 150 mW cm(-2) 460 nm blue LED source. As expected, these rate constants are larger than those observed for commercially prepared, micron-sized WO3. XPS analysis shows that during catalysis, the concentration of W5+ on the surface increases, but the nanoplatelets are stable under these reaction conditions. The overall morphology and size of the particles are retained through the reactions. Moreover, the nanoplatelets are recyclable-showing no loss in activity for four reaction cycles.

Novel small molecule compounds based on various scaffolds including chalcone, flavonoid, and resorcinol dibenzyl ether were designed and tested for their inhibitory activity against the Programmed Cell Death-1/Programmed Cell Death-Ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) pathway. Among them, compound NP19 inhibited the human PD-1/PD-L1 interaction with IC50 values of 12.5 nM in homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF) binding assays. In addition, NP19 dose-dependently elevated IFN-gamma production in a coculture model of Hep3B/OS-8/hPD-L1 and CD3 T cells. Furthermore, NP19 displayed significant in vivo antitumor efficacy in two different mouse models of cancer (a melanoma B16-F10 tumor model and an H22 hepatoma tumor model). Moreover, H&E staining and flow cytometry data suggested that NP19 activated the immune microenvironment in the tumor, which may contribute to its antitumor effects. This work shows NP19 is a promising lead compound for further development as a new generation of small molecule inhibitors targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway.

Herein, we describe an organic photoredox system for direct arene C-H radiofluorination, using a peroxide oxidizing agent and LEDs as the light source. In conjunction with an optimized photocatalyst and a microtubing reactor, this system is applicable to a range of electron-rich aromatics and heteroaromatics. We also demonstrate the feasibility of C-H radiofluorination without an azeotropic drying step, which greatly simplifies the workflow of the labeling process.

We synthesized a novel material, namely palladized zero-valent zinc (Pd/ZVZ), and investigated its efficiency for the degradation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The plated Pd significantly enhances the degradation rate of PBDEs by ZVZ at the optimum loading of 1% by weight. In the Pd/ZVZ system, very few lower BDEs were accumulated during the degradation of 2,2′,4,4′- tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) and the final product is diphenyl ether, whereas the ZVZ system only debrominates BDE-47 to di-BDE and further debromination becomes very difficult. The degradation rates of BDEs by ZVZ greatly decreased with decreased bromination level, while in Pd/ZVZ system, the degradation rates of PBDEs did not show a significant difference. These indicate different mechanisms. This was confirmed by investigating the debromination pathways of the PBDEs in both systems. We determined that a H-transfer was the dominant mechanism in the Pd/ZVZ system. In addition, the reactivity of Pd/ZVZ to BDE-47 is pH-independent, which has a great advantage for various applications over ZVZ alone. Our study provides a new approach for the remediation of the PBDEs pollution. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The relative abundances of compound classes (e.g. CHO1, CHO2 and CHNO1) in fossil fuels have been widely used in previous researches based on the data from mass spectrometry (MS). However, such observations are susceptible to the ionization bias of MS due to the variation of ionization efficiency, which may affect the downstream quantitative analysis. Many efforts have been devoted to investigating the ionization efficiencies of a variety of model compounds, but not complex and diverse mixtures. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate how quantitatively ionization bias affects the MS analysis of complex mixtures. In this study, ionization bias was preliminarily investigated by comparing the elemental compositions obtained from MS-analysis via different ionization methods with the data acquired by a standard elemental analyzer. A coal-derived liquid and mixtures of five model compounds were ionized by atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization (APCI), electrospray ionization or direct analysis in real-time, followed by analyzing using a high-resolution Orbitrap MS to obtain elemental compositions. MS-based results via APCI ion source showed the closest elemental compositions to those obtained from the elemental analyzer. For the MS-based analysis, the abundances of S-and O-containing compounds were significantly lower and that of N-containing compounds was clearly higher compared to ultimate analysis. The abundances of compound classes were adjusted to provide a closer approximation of the actual contents, which might better serve for the downstream quantitative analysis. Although absolute quantification still needs additional work, the adjusted MS-based analysis provides not only the molecular level data, but also a better quantification ability compared to previous analytical approaches.

A template free synthesis route was developed for the synthesis of hierarchical zeolite Beta from a natural layered aluminosilicate mineral kaolin. Detailed study on the crystallization of zeolite Beta established the optimized synthesis condition, and the synthesized hierarchical Beta zeolite was fully studied by XRD, IR, SEM, TEM, BET, NH3-TPD, Py-IR and NMR techniques. The characterization results reveal that the hierarchical Beta zeolite possesses good crystallinity, bimodal pore architecture, large surface area, big pore volume, high acid site concentration and excellent hydrothermal stability. An improved catalytic performance was achieved in hierarchical Beta zeolite for the esterification of acetic acid with benzyl alcohol, and the high activity and selectivity in this zeolite are mainly attributed to the presence of mesopores for accelerating the intraparticle diffusion rate of both reactant and product. This novel synthesis methodology provides a low-cost and environmentally-benign way for the preparation of hierarchical Beta zeolite, which could serve a sustainable platform of large-scale production of hierarchical zeolite for practical application.
