Polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on polymer donors and nonfullerene small molecule acceptors are a very attractive technology for solar energy conversion, and their performance is heavily determined by film morphology. It is of considerable interest to reveal instructive morphology-performance relationships of these blends. This feature article discusses the recent advances in analysing the morphology formation of nonfullerene PSCs with an effective polymer thermodynamic quantity, i.e., Flory-Huggins interaction parameter chi. In particular, guidelines of high and low chi systems are summarized. The fundamental understanding of chi and its correlations to film morphology and photovoltaic device parameters is of utmost relevance for providing essential material design criteria, establishing suitable morphology processing guidelines, and thus advancing the practical applications of PSCs based on nonfullerene acceptors.

Using thianthrene S-oxide (TTSO) as a transient mediator, para-arylation and alkenylation of mono-substituted arenes have been demonstrated via a para-selective thianthrenation/Pd-catalyzed thio-Suzuki-Miyaura coupling sequence under mild conditions. Catalytic N-alkylation of amines by alcohols to produce desired amines is an important catalytic reaction in industry. Various noble-metal-based homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been reported for this process. The development of cheap non-noble-metal heterogeneous catalysts for the N-alkylation reaction would be highly desirable. Hereby, we propose the N-alkylation of amines by alcohols over a cheap and efficient heterogeneous catalyst-titanium hydroxide. This catalyst provides a selectivity higher than 90% to secondary amines for functionalized aromatic and aliphatic alcohols and amines with high catalytic activity and stability. Mild Bronsted acidity formed by the continuous rehydration of Lewis acidity excludes the side reactions and deactivation by adsorbed species. The mechanism of the reaction involves dehydration of alcohols to ethers with subsequent C-O bond cleavage by amine with the formation of secondary amine and recovery of alcohol.

To investigate the status of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in indoor dust in China, published scientific studies were systematically collected and analyzed. The analysis revealed large variations among microenvironments, including offices (median: 14.59 mu g/g) and e-waste workshops (median: 13.36 mu g/g), with high levels of OPFRs contamination. Chlorinated organophosphate ester flame retardants (CI-OPFRs) were the dominant OPFRs (52-75%) in most indoor dust samples; however, in ewaste workshops, aryl- and alkyl-OPFRs were the most abundant. As an alternative flame retardant to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), OPFRs concentrations have increased in recent years in indoor environments in China. Urban sources are of greatest concern: Shanghai (mean: 13.54 mu g/g), Guangzhou (mean: 10.76 mu g/g), and Beijing (mean: 9.37 mu g/g) have high EOPFRs contamination levels in indoor dust. Compared to other countries, the OPFRs concentrations in indoor dust in all studied microenvironments from China (median: 8.81 mu g/g) were low. The estimated daily intakes of EOPFRs by dust ingestion for adults and children were 2.12 and 11.06 ng/kg/body weight/day (average), respectively. Human exposure to OPFRs through the accidental intake of indoor dust does not pose a direct health risk to the Chinese population. Significant advancements in C-N bond formationviaC-H bond functionalisation have made it a staple in the production of nitrogen-containing compounds in both industry and academia. However, transition metal-free synthesis, particularly in the case of C(sp(3))-N formation, has remained a significant challenge to the synthetic community. Herein we report a procedure for alpha-C(sp(3))-H amination of ethereal compounds through use of azodicarboxylates as the nitrogen source and freely-available atmospheric oxygen to access ethereal radical intermediatesviaaerobic C-H activation. The use of fluorinated alcohols as solvent is observed to greatly increase the efficiency of the reaction and we show experimentally and theoretically the key role of H-bonding between fluorinated alcohols and azodicarboxylates. Calculations of the condensed Fukui functions of a H-bonded fluorinated alcohol-azodicarboxylate complex correlates with a significantly increased susceptibility of azodicarboxylates to undergo reaction with radicals, which informs a number of recent reports in the literature.

To investigate overall pollution and potential risk of 32 targets (11 PBDEs, 8 NBFRs, and 13 OPFRs) in indoor and outdoor environments, dust and PM10 samples were sampled from non-occupational and occupational zones in Chengdu, China. Sigma Cl-OPFRs, BDE-209, and DBDPE were the dominant constitutes in both the non occupational and occupational dust. Regarding the PM10, no significant differences were found between the kitchen and the living room for studied OPFRs except TDCIPP, and TCEP, TCPP, TEHP, and TCP displayed significant correlation among the kitchen, the living room and personal samples. Profiles of the OPFRs in the PM10 from occupational areas presented great variation and ranked as: Sigma Aryl-OPFRs < Sigma Alkyl-OPFRs < Sigma Cl-OPFRs. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of the investigated FRs via dust suggested dust ingestion and inhalation were the main exposure route to FRs, and the total of EDIs were at least one order of magnitude lower than reference data, indicating a low risk for the general public in Chengdu. However, with increasing usage of FRs in daily goods, a long-term monitoring should be conducted. Ammonia (NH3) electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) is an important reaction in direct NH3 fuel cells, NH3 electrolyzer, and NH3-based electrochemical sensors. However, its slow kinetics and structure-sensitive properties require specific electrocatalyst designs. In this study, Ir-decorated N nanocubes are developed as unique surface engineered model catalysts. For the first time, we find that a trace amount of Ir (less than 2%) could increase the AOR activity of N nanocubes by more than twice. Theoretical simulation results also illustrate that the surfacedecorated Ir could lower the energy barrier in the rate determining *NH formation step on N surfaces, thus increasing activity in accordance with experimental findings. Additionally, Ir and Ni(OH)(2)-decorated N nanocubes can significantly improve the durability. Our findings demonstrate the importance of surface engineering in catalyst synthesis and pave the way of advanced electrocatalyst designs for ammonia oxidation and other catalytic reactions.

High temperature thermoplastics are gaining popularity due to their superior toughness and durability. For a new member in the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family, polyetherketoneketone (PERK) has shown the highest melting temperature, up to 380 degrees C. Meanwhile, it requires a high temperature to improve the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between PEKK and a fiber, toward advanced thermoplastic composites. Owing to the strong Joule heating in carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers, a more efficient strategy is designed to enhance the IFSS. Under the electro treatment, the surrounding PEKK starts the melting at the fiber surface, and even impregnates into the CNT assemblies. As a result, the interfacial interaction can be remarkably enhanced. The highest IFSS is up to 80.4 MPa for the electro-treated interface between a CNT fiber and PEKK, higher than the thermal-treated IFSS (52.5 MPa) and that between an aramid fiber and PEKK (59.8 MPa).

Semicrystalline poly(aryl ether ketone)s (PAEKs) represent an industrially important class of high-performance engineering thermoplastics with excellent physicochemical and mechanical properties, and the synthesis of PAEKs with enhanced glass transition temperatures (T-g) and moderate melting temperatures (T-m) is highly desirable. In the work reported, novel poly(ether ketone ketone)s (PEKKs) containing 1,4-naphthylene units in main chains were synthesized by Friedel-Crafts solution copolycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride with a mixture of diphenyl ether and 1,4-di(4-phenoxybenzoyl)naphthalene (1,4-DPOBN). The polymerization proceeded smoothly in 1,2-dichloroethane in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 and N-methylpyrrolidone under mild conditions and afforded polymers having inherent viscosities of 0.66-0.98 dL g(-1). The polymers with 5-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN are semicrystalline and have obviously enhanced T-g over commercial poly(ether ether ketone)s and PEKKs due to the incorporation of rigid and bulky 1,4-naphthylene moieties into the main chain. The polymers with 20-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN not only have high T-g of 175-177 degrees C, but also relatively low T-m of 331-336 degrees C, having high potential for melt processing. The polymers with 20-30 mol% 1,4-DPOBN also exhibit excellent thermal stability and good mechanical and solvent-resistance properties. (c) 2021 Society of Chemical Industry

The use of copper for reducing nosocomial infections or healthcare-acquired infections (HAI) has been carried out in intensive care units (ICU) by replacing some objects generally made of stainless steel or other materials with solid pieces of copper. The authors’ proposal for a sustainable use of copper consists of introducing it in a lamina + adhesive format. This proposal has been tested in an ICU at the Ceuta Hospital in Spain. It has been found to provide an equally efficient solution as antibacterial material than the usual solid format, but with only a layer of 50 microns of copper, which is a high-cost and limited resource. After that intervention, some improvements are also proposed: a standardization of the pieces chosen to cover with a lamina of copper for saving material; and another method of replacement aiming to lower the time that the ICU cannot be used. To ensure that the proposed bonding method is harmless to human health and the adhesive does not interfere with the indoor environment by releasing toxic chemicals, the lamina + adhesive sheet has been further tested. The results and proposals are briefly shown.
