The mild depolymerization of lignin into aromatic monomer is a grand challenge owing to the various aryl ether C-O bonds, particularly for the most abundant beta-O-4, alpha-O-4 and 4-O-5 linkages. Rod-shaped CeO2 supported AuPd bimetallic catalysts fabricated by sol-immobilization method presented robust alloy structure, as evidenced by TEM, XPS, UV-vis, and CO-DRIFTS. For the hydrogenolysis of C-O bond model compound with formic acid, Au1Pd1/CeO2 showed about 23.5 and 6 folds increase in activity compared with its monometallic counterparts Au/CeO2 and Pd/CeO2, respectively. The outstanding performance was mainly ascribed to the increased adsorption ability of electron-deficient Pd for aromatic C-O bond. Additionally, formic acid-mediated Au1Pd1/CeO2 has efficiently performed hydrogenolysis of real lignin into a variety of valuable monophenols, achieving 44.1% yield at low temperature.

Novel small molecule compounds based on various scaffolds including chalcone, flavonoid, and resorcinol dibenzyl ether were designed and tested for their inhibitory activity against the Programmed Cell Death-1/Programmed Cell Death-Ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) pathway. Among them, compound NP19 inhibited the human PD-1/PD-L1 interaction with IC50 values of 12.5 nM in homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF) binding assays. In addition, NP19 dose-dependently elevated IFN-gamma production in a coculture model of Hep3B/OS-8/hPD-L1 and CD3 T cells. Furthermore, NP19 displayed significant in vivo antitumor efficacy in two different mouse models of cancer (a melanoma B16-F10 tumor model and an H22 hepatoma tumor model). Moreover, H&E staining and flow cytometry data suggested that NP19 activated the immune microenvironment in the tumor, which may contribute to its antitumor effects. This work shows NP19 is a promising lead compound for further development as a new generation of small molecule inhibitors targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway.

The Pd/C catalysts are widely used in synthesis of fine chemicals in industry, but their production suffers from a complicated two-step process involving impregnation and reduction, and requires large amounts of solvents and reductant, which would lead to a series of issues such as time consumption, resource waste and environmental pollution. Herein, ultra-small Pd nanoparticles uniformly anchored on carbon nanotubes (Pd/CNTs) were synthesized by using a one-pot and low-temperature reduction strategy. The present process/technology is very sensitive to and controlled by the supports and solvents, and the carbon support and acetic acid synergistically play crucial and decisive roles in the fast production of Pd/C catalysts. Also, the used solvents can be recycled and reutilized, which meets the requirements of sustainable chemistry and green economy. When the as-obtained Pd/CNTs catalyst was used to catalyze the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde, it achieved a conversion efficiency as high as 99.3 % and a high selectivity up to >99.9 %. The simple, scalable and environmentally friendly strategy can be extended to anchor Pd nanoparticles on various carbon substrates, which sheds a new light on the synthesis of Pd/C catalysts.

The incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased rapidly worldwide in recent years. Exposure to endocrine disruptors can affect thyroid hormones and is probably carcinogenic to humans. The effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), some heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As and Hg) on risk of TC have been rarely reported. Hence, we aimed to examine the associations of TC risk with exposure to PBDEs and four heavy metals. This case-control study involved 308 TC cases and 308 age- and sex-matched controls. Plasma PBDEs concentrations were determined by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. Concentrations of heavy metals concentrations in urine specimens were detected by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Conditional logistic regression models were used to explore associations of PBDEs and 4 heavy metals exposures with TC risk. A joint-effect interaction term was inserted into the logistic regression models to assess the multiplicative interaction effects of PBDEs-heavy metals on TC risk. Some PBDE congeners (BDE-028, -047, -099, -183, -209) were positively correlated with TC risk. As and Hg were also associated with the increased TC risk. Compared with low exposure levels, participants with high exposure levels of As and Hg were 5.35 and 2.98 times more likely to have TC, respectively. Co-exposure to BDE-209 and Pb had a negative interaction effect on TC risk. Some PBDE congeners (e.g. BDE-028, -047, -209) and Hg had a significant positive interaction effect on the risk of TC. The joint exposure of BDE-183 and Hg showed a negative interaction effect on TC risk, but the corresponding OR value was still statistically significant. Exposure to PBDEs, As and Hg may be associated with TC development. Joint exposure to PBDEs and Pb or Hg has interaction effects on TC risk. A total of 11 bacterial strains capable of completely degrading 2-butoxyethanol (2-BE) were isolated from forest soil, a biotrickling filter, a bioscrubber, and activated sludge, and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Eight of these strains belong to the genus Pseudomonas; the remaining three strains are Hydrogenophaga pseudoflava BOE3, Gordonia terrae BOE5, and Cupriavidus oxalaticus BOE300. In addition to 2-BE, all isolated strains were able to grow on 2-ethoxyethanol and 2-propoxyethanol, ethanol, n-hexanol, ethyl acetate, 2-butoxyacetic acid (2-BAA), glyoxylic acid, and n-butanol. Apart from the only gram-positive strain isolated, BOE5, none of the strains were able to grow on the nonpolar ethers diethyl ether, di-n-butyl ether, n-butyl vinyl ether, and dibenzyl ether, as well as on 1-butoxy-2-propanol. Strains H. pseudoflava BOE3 and two of the isolated pseudomonads, Pseudomonas putida BOE100 and P. vancouverensis BOE200, were studied in more detail. The maximum growth rates of strains BOE3, BOE100, and BOE200 at 30 degrees C were 0.204 h(-1) at 4 mM, 0.645 h(-1) at 5 mM, and 0.395 h(-1) at 6 mM 2-BE, respectively. 2-BAA, n-butanol, and butanoic acid were detected as potential metabolites during the degradation of 2-BE. These findings indicate that the degradation of 2-BE by the isolated gram-negative strains proceeds via oxidation to 2-BAA with subsequent cleavage of the ether bond yielding glyoxylate and n-butanol. Since Gordonia terrae BOE5 was the only strain able to degrade nonpolar ethers like diethyl ether, the degradation pathway of 2-BE may be different for this strain.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) that form during industrial thermal processes, such as the cement kiln co-processing of BDE-209, are highly toxic contaminants. Nevertheless, the formation mechanisms of octa-brominated dioxins/furans (OBDD/Fs), most PBDD/F congeners, and one precursor of the more toxic lower PBDD/Fs from BDE-209 have received little attention. In cement kiln co-processes, the Ca2+- mediated regulation of OBDD/F formation is still debated. In this study, simulation experiments revealed that the average brominating degree of PBDD/Fs was 7.8, indicating that OBDD/Fs are dominant congeners (93.6 % median). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations found a new transition state (TS1) with a lower energy barrier than that found in a previous study. Three major OBDD/F formation reactions suggested that the presence of Ca2+ was thermodynamically beneficial to the formation of OBDD/Fs. This promotion effect can be attributed to the transfer of electron density leading to a change in the Mayer bond order (MBO) among elements when Ca2+ was bound. Intriguingly, in the transition state structures of the Ca2+-bound and Ca2+-free systems, the MBO difference among the old and new bonds can reveal the difficulty of Ca2+-mediated OBDD/F formation reactions from BDE-209.

A green, cost-effective and facile steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) strategy was developed to synthesize core-shell-structured zeolite composites with different frameworks between the core and shell. Chemical incompatibility from different structures has been circumvented by dip-coating Silicalite-1 seeds and an in situ transformation process. Beta@Silicalite-1 zeolites with a nanoscale polycrystal Silicalite-1 shell wrapped around the monocrystal Beta core was synthesized. The crystallization process and synthetic parameters, such as the composition of the core, crystallization temperature and gel composition of the seed solution, were investigated. The results revealed the importance of stability of the core and the crystallization rate of the Silicalite-1 shell. Interestingly, a trace amount of aluminum in the core zeolite could help resist corrosion during crystallization. Further investigation on alkylation and etherification reactions over Beta@Silicalite-1 demonstrated the advantage in selectivity control toward self-etherification versus alkylation.

In this work, 1,4-diphenyltriphenylene-grafted (14.2%) polysiloxane (DPTP) was successfully synthesized and statically coated on capillary columns as a stationary phase for gas chromatography. The DPTP columns exhibited excellent efficiencies of 3646 plates m(-1) for a 30 m column and 3125 plates m(-1) for a 10 m column, as evidenced by naphthalene measurements at 120 degrees C, which demonstrated the good film-forming ability of DPTP. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the weight of DPTP is reduced by 2% at 380 degrees C. Separation of the polyethylene pyrolysis product indicated that the maximum allowable operating temperature of the DPTP column is 360 degrees C. The moderate polarity of the DPTP column was investigated in terms of McReynolds constants. The DPTP column was utilized to separate analytes, including aromatic isomers, fatty acid esters, ethers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds, on the basis of the column’s strong pi-pi stacking, dipole-induced dipole, and dispersion interactions with solutes. In general, the DPTP column offers great potential as a novel stationary phase for separating various analytes due to its special structure and remarkable separation performance.

A theoretical and experimental study is performed for liquid-solid phase equilibria in the two-component diphenyl oxide-n-hexadecane system. The results show that this system is eutectic. Two means are chosen for the theoretical study of the system: the Schroder-Le Chatelier equations and the original UNIFAC system. Experimental studies are made via differential thermal analysis on a DSC unit. Results from the theoretical and experimental studies are presented in the formT-xdiagrams of the system. The theoretical and experimental data are compared to one another. Each way of calculating is assessed, and recommendations are made for their application. The eutectic coordinates (melting point and composition) are determined experimentally. The following values are determined experimentally for a eutectic melt: the enthalpy of melting; density at 25 degrees C; kinematic viscosity in the temperature range of 25 to 50 degrees C; flash point in an open cup; boiling point, and refractive index in the temperature range of 25 to 40 degrees C. The composition of the eutectic melt can be used in industry as a heat transfer fluid.

Microtubule targeting agents represent a very active arena in the development of anticancer agents. In particular, compounds binding at the colchicine site in tubulin are being deeply studied, and the structural information recently available on this binding site allows structure-directed design of new ligands. Structural comparison of our recently reported high resolution X-Ray structure of the cyclohexanedione derivative TUB075 bound to tubulin and the tubulin-DAMA-colchicine complex has revealed a conformational change in the alpha T5 loop. By a grid-based computational analysis of the tubulin-DAMA-colchicine binding site, we have identified a new favourable binding area in the colchicine-site that was unexplored by our lead TUB075. Thus, based on a structure-guided design, new cyclohexanedione derivatives have been synthesized and tested for tubulin binding and in cellular assays. As a result, we have identified diphenyl ether derivatives with IC50 values around 10-40 nM against three different tumor cell lines and affinity constants for tubulin similar to that of colchicine around 10(7) M-1.
