A functional raspberry-like core-shell composite particle consisting of a conducting polyaniline (PANI) core and magnetic zinc ferrite shell is synthesized by Pickering emulsion polymerization. The morphology and chemical structure of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite are evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. An electrorheological/magnetorheological fluid consisting of the PANI/zinc-ferrite composite dispersed in silicone oil with a particle concentration of 5 vol % is fabricated. Its rheological characteristics under external electric and magnetic fields are investigated by using a rotational rheometer. Under the electric or magnetic field, the PANI/zinc-ferrite particles form chain-like structures, demonstrating a solid-like state.

Nanocasting is a convenient way for preparing highly porous, nanostructured soft materials. Mesoporous polymer nanocasts have been reported for over a decade, however, several aspects remain to be explored further. To do so, we report a comprehensive investigation of the physicochemical characteristics of high surface area functional organic polymers and copolymers obtained by nanocasting. Divinylbenzene, styrene and chloromethyl styrene were selectively polymerized within the pores of mesoporous SBA-15 or KIT-6 silicas. Following template removal, the resulting materials were characterized. The nanocast mesoporous polymers were also modified to introduce functional groups. The success of the functionalization was assessed analytically and by model catalytic tests. The study points to the advantages of the hard templating method for structuring organic materials but also its limitations.

Nanofluids are colloidal suspensions of nanomaterials in a fluid which exhibit enhanced thermophysical properties compared to conventional fluids. The addition of nanomaterials to a fluid can increase the thermal conductivity, isobaric-specific heat, diffusivity, and the convective heat transfer coefficient of the original fluid. For this reason, nanofluids have been studied over the last decades in many fields such as biomedicine, industrial cooling, nuclear reactors, and also in solar thermal applications. In this paper, we report the preparation and characterization of nanofluids based on one-dimensional MoS2 and WS2 nanosheets to improve the thermal properties of the heat transfer fluid currently used in concentrating solar plants (CSP). A comparative study of both types of nanofluids was performed for explaining the influence of nanostructure morphologies on nanofluid stability and thermal properties. The nanofluids prepared in this work present a high stability over time and thermal conductivity enhancements of up to 46% for MoS2-based nanofluid and up to 35% for WS2-based nanofluid. These results led to an increase in the efficiency of the solar collectors of 21.3% and 16.8% when the nanofluids based on MoS2 nanowires or WS2 nanosheets were used instead of the typical thermal oil.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an approved modality for the treatment of various types of maligancies and diseased states. However, most of the available photosensitizers (PS) are highly hydrophobic, which limits their solubility and dispersion in biological fluids and can lead to self-quenching and sub-optimal therapeutic efficacy. In this study, chlorin e6 (Ce6)-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) nanoclusters (Ce6-SCs) were prepared via an oil-in-water emulsion. The physical chemical properties of the Ce6-SCs were systematically evaluated. Dual-mode imaging and PDT was subsequently performed in tumor-bearing mice. Chlorin e6 is capable of solubilizing hydrophobic SPION into stable, water-soluble nanoclusters without the use of any additional amphiphiles or carriers. The method is reproducible and the Ce6-SCs are highly stable under physiological conditions. The Ce6-SCs have an average diameter of 92 nm and low polydispersity (average PDI < 0.2). Encapsulation efficiency of both Ce6 and SPION is approximate to 100%, and the total Ce6 payload can be as high as 56% of the total weight (Ce6 + Fe). The Ce6-SCs localize within tumors via enhanced permeability and retention and are detectable by magnetic resonance (MR) and optical imaging. With PDT, Ce6-SCs demonstrate high singlet oxygen generation and produce a significant delay in tumor growth in mice. Formula: C14H14O. Naphthalenediimide-based n-type polymeric semiconductors are extensively used for constructing high-performance all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). For such all-polymer systems, charge recombination can be reduced by using thinner active layers, yet suffering insufficient near-infrared light harvesting from the polymeric acceptor. Conversely, increasing the layer thickness overcomes the light harvesting issue, but at the cost of severe charge recombination effects. Here we demonstrate that to manage light propagation within all-PSCs, a thick bulk-heterojunction film of approximately 350 nm is needed to effectively enhance photo-harvesting in the near-infrared region. To overcome the severe charge recombination in such a thick film, a non-halogenic additive is used to induce a well-ordered micro-structure that inherently suppresses recombination loss. The combined strategies of light management and delicate morphology optimization lead to a promising efficiency over 10% for thick-film all-PSCs with active area of 1 cm(2), showing great promise for future large-scale production and application of all-PSCs.

Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols could be achieved generally with three reaction pathways: tautomerization, direct ring hydrogenation and direct C-O bond cleavage. The former pathway has been extensively studied over Pd/Fe catalyst in liquid-phase reaction, however, the contribution of the latter two is yet subject to further investigations. In this report, a comparative study of direct C-O bond cleavage and direct ring hydrogenation reaction pathways is presented on Pd/Fe, Fe and Pd/C catalysts using diphenyl ether as modelling compound. Despite its much higher activation energy than direct ring hydrogenation, direct C-O bond cleavage is dominant over Pd/Fe with much higher rates than the monometallic analogues due to the synergic catalysis of Pd-Fe. Various optical clearing methods have emerged as powerful tools for deep biological imaging. Organic solvent-based clearing methods, such as three-dimensional imaging of solvent-cleared organs (3DISCO), present the advantages of high clearing efficiency and size reduction for panoptic imaging of large samples such as whole organs and even whole bodies. However, 3DISCO results in a rapid quenching of endogenous fluorescence, which has impeded its application. Here, we propose an advanced method named FDISCO to overcome this limitation. FDISCO can effectively preserve the fluorescence of various fluorescent probes and can achieve a long storage time of months while retaining potent clearing capability. We used FDISCO for high-resolution imaging and reconstruction of neuronal and vascular networks. Moreover, FDISCO is compatible with labeling by multiple viruses and enables fine visualization of neurons with weak fluorescence labeling in the whole brain. FDISCO represents an effective alternative to the three-dimensional mapping of whole organs and can be extensively used in biomedical studies.

Here we present a protocol for analyses of axon regeneration and density in unsectioned adult mouse spinal cord. This includes methods for injury and tracing of dorsal column sensory and corticospinal axons; clearing and staining of unsectioned spinal cord; visualization of axon degeneration and regeneration in cleared and uncleared specimens using two-photon microscopy; and either manual or semi-automatic analysis of axon density and regeneration in 3D space using Imaris and ImageJ software. This protocol can be used to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying nervous system degeneration and regeneration and to establish the therapeutic efficacy of candidate neuroregenerative treatments. Because tissue sectioning is not required, this protocol enables unambiguous evaluation of regeneration and greatly accelerates the speed at which analyses can be conducted. Surgical procedures take < 30 min per mouse, with a wait period of 2 weeks between axonal injury and tracing and 2-8 weeks between tracing and tissue processing. Clearing and immunolabeling take similar to 1-2 weeks, depending on the size of the sample. Imaging and analysis can be performed in 1 d. Control of the nanoscale molecular ordering and charge-carrier mobility of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) was achieved by the combined use of processing additives and thermal annealing. Evaluation of four processing additives (1,8-octanedithiol (ODT), diphenyl ether (DPE), 1-chloronaphthalene (CN), and 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO), which are commonly used for the fabrication of organic solar cells, revealed that the nanoscale molecular ordering and, therefore, the charge-carrier mobility, are largely affected by the additives, as demonstrated by spectral absorption, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. Thermal annealing selectively influenced the morphological changes, depending on the solubility of P3HT in the additive at high temperature. In the case of CN, in which P3HT can be dissolved at moderate temperature, significant molecular ordering was observed even without thermal annealing. For DIO, in which P3HT is only soluble at elevated temperature, the mobility reached 1.14 x 10(-1) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) only after annealing. ODT and DPE were not effective as processing additives in a single-component P3HT. This study provides insight for designing the processing conditions to control the morphology and charge-transport properties of polymers.

Jasmine is one of the most valuable commercial oil bearing plants from family Oleaceae used for the production of jasmine scent mostly in the form of concrete and absolute. Being an export commodity, development of reliable analytical methods for its jasmine species and derived products authentication and or adulterants detection should now follow. A comparative volatiles profiling of Jasminum grandiflorum L., J. multiflorum (Burm. f.) Andrews and J. sambac (L.) Aiton flowers in addition to J. grandiflorum products viz., concrete and absolute at different time periods was performed using solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to GC/MS. A total of 77 volatiles were identified belonging to esters, alcohols, sesquiterpenes, ketones, aldehydes, phenols, hydrocarbons and nitrogenous compounds. The phenylpropanoid/benzenoid and terpenoid classes were the major volatile classes in jasmine. Benzyl acetate was the chief scent volatile whereas major terpenoids included linalool, nerolidol, alpha-farnesene and cis-jasmone. Results revealed aroma variation among different flowers and products obtained from J. grandiflorum at different months. This study provides the first comprehensive and comparative aroma profile for Egyptian Jasminum species along with its products that could be used for its future quality control in industry.
