A solution of 5-methoxy-2-methylbenzenamine (1.3 g, 9.48 mmol) in 48% HBr (13 mL) and EtOH (10 mL) was cooled to 0 C. and NaNO2 (0.78 g, 11.30 mmol) in water (5 mL) was added dropwise over 15 minutes while keeping the temperature of the reaction between 0-5 C. After the clear pale brown solution was kept at 0 C. with stirring for 1 h, this solution was transferred into the boiling solution of CuBr (6.8 g, 47.4 mmol) in 48% HBr (25 mL). The solution was refluxed for overnight. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and the reaction was diluted with water (50 mL). The acidic solution was extracted with ethyl acetate (2*50 mL). The combined ethyl acetate was washed by saturated NaCl (1*50 mL) and was dried over sodium sulfate. The sodium sulfate was removed by filtration and the solvent was removed by vacuum. The crude product was purified by silica gel column (3.5*16 cm) chromatography with hexanes as an eluent to yield colorless oil (750 mg, 39%).

Step 1: 3-Bromo-4-methylanisole To a suspension of 5-methoxy-2-methylanilme (5.00 g, 36.4 mmol) in water (144 mL) at 10 0C, was added cone H2SO4 (56 mL), while maintaining internal temperature below 25 0C. After 1 h at rt, the mixture was cooled to 3 0C and a solution of sodium nitrite (3.77 g, 54.7 mmol) in water (20 mL) was added dropwise over 30 mm, keeping the internal temperature below 5 0C After 1 h at 3 0C, the yellow heterogeneous mixture was poured into a 5 0C solution of CuBr (52.0 g, 364 mmol) in 48% aqueous HBr (260 mL). The dark mixture was heated at 60 0C for 2 h, allowed to cool to rt and extracted with Et2O (3x) (solid Na2S2O3 was added in the extraction process for partial decoloration). The combined organics were washed with 1 N NaOH (3x), 10% aq. Na2S2O3 and brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated, affording the title compound as an orange liquid which was used without further purification in the next Step. 1H NMR (500 MHz, acetone-d6): delta 7.24 (d, IH), 7.14 (d, IH), 6.87 (dd, IH), 3.80 (s, 3H), 2.31 (s, 3H).

3-Fluoro-4-methyl-phenyl chloroformate A mixture of 5-methoxy-2-methyl aniline (5.0 g; 36 mmol), HCl (7.6 mL of a 12 M solution; 91 mmol) and H2O (11 mL) was heated at 60 C. for 15 min until complete dissolution had occurred. The reaction was cooled to 0 C. and an aqueous solution of NaNO2 (2.5 g; 36 mmol) was added dropwise (internal temperature <=7 C.). The reaction was stirred at 0 C. for 30 min and a 0 C. solution of HBF4 (5.3 mL of a 48% solution; 40 mmol) was added cautiously. The reaction was stirred at 0 C. for 20 min, and the resultant brown solid was filtered, washed with ice water (3*10 mL) and H2O (2*10 mL). The solid was dried under high vacuum for 20 h, then heated (heat gun) until evolution of BF3 (white fumes) had ceased. The resulting brown oil was partitioned between EtOAc and H2O. The organic phase was dried (Na2SO4), concentrated in vacuo and distilled by Kugelrohr to give 3-fluoro-4-methyl anisole (1.6 g; 31%) as a colorless oil.
