A synthetic approach to a novel type of phosphonium and mixed phosphonium-iodonium ylides containing a conformationally fixed phosphonium fragment is developed. New representatives of these families of chemical compounds based on cyclic phenoxaphosphinine were synthesized. One compound was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Based on the H-1 NMR data, one can state that phosphonium ylide exists in solution in the form of two geometric isomers even at room temperature. This is indicative of pronounced double-bond character of the bond between the ylide carbon atom and the stabilizing carbomethoxy group.

Lignin valorization is significantly influenced by the degrees of lignin condensation measured by the amount of cleaved beta-O-4 ether linkages and interunit C-C linkages formed during biomass fractionation. To minimize the cleavage of aryl ether and formation of C-C linkages, a p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH)/choline chloride (ChCl) solvent system with hydrotropic properties was evaluated. The ChC1 was chosen to control the H+ concentration of the p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system. Compared with p-TsOH/H2O, the degradation of beta-O-4 was kept in a similar rate during p-TsOH/ChCl fractionation; however, the formation of C-C linkage was slower. Under 75/25 p-TsOH/ChCl mass ratio at 80 degrees C for 20 min, 76.6 % of miscanthus lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 30.9 %, and 88.9 % of wheat straw lignin, with beta-O-4 content of 33.6 %, can be dissolved. In addition, the low polar and layered structure of hydrotropic p-TsOH/ChCl system has a strong ability to dissolve lignin, which resulted in lignin with larger particle size and lower surface charge. The results also indicated that lignin from p-TsOH/ChCl solvent system has great potential for lignin depolymerization to aromatics for valorization.

Magnetic biopolymer hybrid nanoparticles have gained a lot of attention in the field of biomedical applications. Here we present the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated magnetic clusters of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Firstly, the superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid were synthesized and characterized in terms of size, composition and magnetic properties. Secondly, magnetic nanoclusters were prepared and wrapped with HA grafted with an ethylene glycol-based copolymer. The resulting nanostructures and nanobeads were characterized using electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic measurements. The clustering of magnetite nanoparticles facilitates magnetic purification, separation, rapid attraction and controlled positioning by high field gradient micro-magnet arrays. In addition, clusters could be formed in the presence of a fluorescent drug model, which demonstrates the possibility of dual functionalization of our hybrid nanosystems: magnetic responsiveness and drug encapsulation.

Extractive distillation is a common method to separate the mixture, which has the low relative volatility. Many solvents were screened to separate the mixture based on the experiment. Because the number of candidate solvents is high and the experiment is time-consuming. Quantitative structure property relationship was introduced to model and evaluate the relative volatility of isopropanol and water mixture. The model was developed based on genetic function approximation and 10 molecular descriptors were involved in using Material Studio software. The cleavage of C-O linkages in aryl ethers in biomass-derived lignin compounds without hydrogenation of the aromatic rings is a major challenge for the production of sustainable mono-aromatics. Conventional strategies over the heterogeneous metal catalysts require the addition of homogeneous base additives causing environmental problems. Herein, we propose a heterogeneous Ru/C catalyst modified by Br atoms for the selective direct cleavage of C-O bonds in diphenyl ether without hydrogenation of aromatic rings reaching the yield of benzene and phenol as high as 90.3 % and increased selectivity to mono-aromatics (97.3 vs. 46.2 % for initial Ru) during depolymerization of lignin. Characterization of the catalyst indicates selective poisoning by Br of terrace sites over Ru nanoparticles, which are active in the hydrogenation of aromatic rings, while the defect sites on the edges and corners remain available and provide higher intrinsic activity in the C-O bond cleavage.

A highly active difunctional Ni-Mg2Si/gamma-Al2O3 was prepared by thermally decomposing nickel tetracarbonyl onto gamma-Al2O3 impregnated with Mg2Si. The non-catalytic hydroconversion (NCHC) and catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) of the extract (E) and extraction residue (ER) from Yinggemajianfeng lignite were investigated over Ni-Mg2Si/gamma-Al2O3 at 240 degrees C in n-hexane. Benzyloxybenzene and oxybis(methylene)dibenzene were used as lignite-related model compounds to speculate the possible mechanisms for the catalytic hydrocracking and hydrogenation over Ni-Mg2Si/gamma-Al2O3. As a result, more organic matter in ER was converted to soluble portion (SP) by the CHC than by the NCHC. The main SP from the CHC are chain alkanes and cyclanes, while that from the NCHC is rich in arenes and oxygen-containing organic compounds. The results indicate that Ni-Mg2Si/gamma-Al2O3 effectively catalyze the hydrocracking of > C-alk-O-linkages and the hydrogenation of aromatic rings in E and ER.

A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.
