Meso- and microporous ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized through combination of the tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and single quaternary ammonium surfactant (Cph-ph-10-6) as dual templates. The structure-directing ability of Cph-ph-10-6 and TPA(+) was investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. By tuning the molar ratios of Cph-ph-10-6/TPAOH from 5/0 to 5/8, the structure-directing effects between Cph-ph-10-6 and TPA(+) could be systematically modulated, resulting in the morphology of the mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites changed from ultrathin nanosheets, through splint like nanosheets, to condensed packing plates. In addition, the hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites exhibited a greater catalytic activity in alkylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol compared with conventional ZSM-5 zeolite. The fine control of meso- and microporous structures of ZSM-5 zeolites by a simple one-step dual template synthesis approach allows the design of the desired catalysts for a green and sustainable future.

In this study, nine congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and sixteen congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in water samples to elucidate their spatial distribution, congener profiles, sources and ecological risks in the Guanlan River during both the dry season (DS) and the wet season (WS). The concentration of Sigma 9PBDE ranged from 58.40 to 186.35 ng/L with an average of 115.72 ng/L in the DS, and from 8.20 to 37.80 ng/L with an average of 22.15 ng/L in the WS. Meanwhile, the concentration of Sigma(16)PAHs was ranged from 121.80 to 8371.70 ng/L with an average of 3271.18 ng/L in the DS and from 1.85 to 7124.25 ng/L with an average of 908.11 ng/L in the WS. The concentrations of PBDEs and PAHs in the DS were significantly higher than those in the WS, probably due to the dilution of the river during the rainy season. Moreover, the spatial distribution of pollutants revealed decreasing trend in the concentration from upstream to downstream and almost identical pattern was observed during both seasons. The source apportionment suggested that penta-BDE and to some extent octa-BDE commercial products were major sources of PBDEs in the study area. However, the sources of PAHs were mainly comprised of fossil fuels and biomass burning, followed by the petroleum products and their mixtures. The results of the ecological risk assessment indicated PBDEs contamination posed high ecological risks, while PAHs exhibited low or no ecological risks in the study area. Consistent with the environmental levels, the ecological risks of pollutants were relatively lower in the WS, compared to that in the DS. The results from this study would provide valuable baseline data and technical support for policy makers to protect the ecological environment of the Guanlan River. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Nowadays, environmental pollution by microplastics (<5 mm; MP) is a major issue. MP are contaminating marine organisms consumed by humans. This work studied MP contamination in two bivalve species of commercial interest: blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) sampled on the Channel coastlines (France). In parallel, 13 plastic additives and 27 hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) were quantified in bivalves flesh using SBSE-TD-GS-MS/MS to explore a possible relationship between their concentrations and MP contamination levels. MP were extracted using a 10% potassium hydroxide digestion method then identified by mu-Raman spectroscopy. The proportion of contaminated bivalves by MP ranged from 34 to 58%. Blue mussels and common cockles exhibited 0.76 +/- 0.40 and 2.46 +/- 1.16 MP/individual and between 0.15 +/- 0.06 and 0.74 +/- 035 MP/g of tissue wet weight. Some HOC and plastic additives were detected in bivalves. However, no significant Pearson or Spearman correlation was found between MP loads and plastic additives or HOC concentrations in bivalve tissues for the two species. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Microtubule targeting agents represent a very active arena in the development of anticancer agents. In particular, compounds binding at the colchicine site in tubulin are being deeply studied, and the structural information recently available on this binding site allows structure-directed design of new ligands. Structural comparison of our recently reported high resolution X-Ray structure of the cyclohexanedione derivative TUB075 bound to tubulin and the tubulin-DAMA-colchicine complex has revealed a conformational change in the alpha T5 loop. By a grid-based computational analysis of the tubulin-DAMA-colchicine binding site, we have identified a new favourable binding area in the colchicine-site that was unexplored by our lead TUB075. Thus, based on a structure-guided design, new cyclohexanedione derivatives have been synthesized and tested for tubulin binding and in cellular assays. As a result, we have identified diphenyl ether derivatives with IC50 values around 10-40 nM against three different tumor cell lines and affinity constants for tubulin similar to that of colchicine around 10(7) M-1. As expected, they halted the cell cycle progression at G2/M phase at concentrations as low as 0.08 mu M. (C) 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

The MFI zeolites with nanosheet assemblies morphology were prepared by a seed-assisted strategy using specially designed bolaform surfactant [C6H13-N+ (CH3)(2)-C6H12-N+ (CH3)(2)-(CH2)(12)-O-(p-C6H4)(2)-O-(CH2)(12)-N+(CH3)(2)-C6H12-N+(CH3)(2)-C6H13] [Br-](4) (C6-12-diphe) as a structure-directing agent. The MFI zeolite nanosheet assemblies were composed of MFI nanosheets with randomly organized structure, exhibiting a narrow mesopore distribution. By tuning the Si/AI ratios of MFI zeolite nanosheet assemblies from 60 to 10, the morphology of resultant zeolites changed from nanosheet stacks to house-of-cards-like structures, and to nanosponges. In addition, the porosity and Bronsted acid/Lewis acid ratio exhibited a parabola-type dependence on the Si/Al ratios of obtained zeolites, indicating that meso-/microporosity and acidity of MFI nanosheet assemblies can be systematically tailored by changing the constituents of zeolites. Catalytic performance of MFI zeolite nanosheet assemblies was investigated in the benzylation of benzyl alcohol with mesitylene. The results revealed that MFI zeolite nanosheet assemblies exhibited extraordinary catalytic activity compared to conventional ZSM-5 zeolite. The conversion of benzyl alcohol and selectivity (1,3,5-trimethyl-2-benzylbenzene vs dibenzyl ether) of zeolite catalysts were linearly dependent on the 81-misted acid/Lewis acid ratio, and they exhibited a parabola-type dependence on the S-ext/S-BET, indicating that a balance between acidity and porosity of zeolites can be realized to modulate the catalytic properties of MFI zeolite nanosheet assemblies guided by C6-12-diphe.

Diphenylborinic acid serves as a cocatalyst for site- and stereoselective C-H alkylation reactions of carbohydrates under photoredox conditions using quinuclidine as the hydrogen atom transfer mediator. Products arising from selective abstraction of the equatorial hydrogens of cis-1,2-diol moieties, followed by C-C bond formation with net retention of configuration, are obtained. Computational modeling supports a mechanism involving formation of a tetracoordinate borinic ester, which accelerates hydrogen atom transfer with the quinuclidine-derived radical cation through polarity-matching and/or ion-pairing effects.

Marine sponges are recognized as valuable sources of bioactive metabolites and renowned as petri dishes of the sea, providing specialized niches for many symbiotic microorganisms. Sponges of the family Dysideidae are well documented to be chemically talented, often containing high levels of polyhalogenated compounds, terpenoids, peptides, and other classes of bioactive small molecules. This group of tropical sponges hosts a high abundance of an uncultured filamentous cyanobacterium, Hormoscilla spongeliae. Here, we report the comparative genomic analyses of two phylogenetically distinct Hormoscilla populations, which reveal shared deficiencies in essential pathways, hinting at possible reasons for their uncultivable status, as well as differing biosynthetic machinery for the production of specialized metabolites. One symbiont population contains clustered genes for expanded polybrominated diphenylether (PBDE) biosynthesis, while the other instead harbors a unique gene cluster for the biosynthesis of the dysinosin nonribosomal peptides. The hybrid sequencing and assembly approach utilized here allows, for the first time, a comprehensive look into the genomes of these elusive sponge symbionts. IMPORTANCE Natural products provide the inspiration for most clinical drugs. With the rise in antibiotic resistance, it is imperative to discover new sources of chemical diversity. Bacteria living in symbiosis with marine invertebrates have emerged as an untapped source of natural chemistry. While symbiotic bacteria are often recalcitrant to growth in the lab, advances in metagenomic sequencing and assembly now make it possible to access their genetic blueprint. A cell enrichment procedure, combined with a hybrid sequencing and assembly approach, enabled detailed genomic analysis of uncultivated cyanobacterial symbiont populations in two chemically rich tropical marine sponges. These population genomes reveal a wealth of secondary metabolism potential as well as possible reasons for historical difficulties in their cultivation.

Naphthalenediimide-based n-type polymeric semiconductors are extensively used for constructing high-performance all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). For such all-polymer systems, charge recombination can be reduced by using thinner active layers, yet suffering insufficient near-infrared light harvesting from the polymeric acceptor. Conversely, increasing the layer thickness overcomes the light harvesting issue, but at the cost of severe charge recombination effects. Here we demonstrate that to manage light propagation within all-PSCs, a thick bulk-heterojunction film of approximately 350 nm is needed to effectively enhance photo-harvesting in the near-infrared region. To overcome the severe charge recombination in such a thick film, a non-halogenic additive is used to induce a well-ordered micro-structure that inherently suppresses recombination loss. The combined strategies of light management and delicate morphology optimization lead to a promising efficiency over 10% for thick-film all-PSCs with active area of 1 cm(2), showing great promise for future large-scale production and application of all-PSCs.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), present in the environment, animals, and humans. Their levels, distribution, and human exposure have been studied extensively, and over the last decade, various legal measures have been taken to prohibit or minimize their production and use due to the increasing amount of evidence of their harmful effects on human and animal health. Our aim here was to make a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the levels and distribution of PBDEs in the aquatic environment, air, and soil, in indoor dust, and in humans. To fulfill this, we searched through Web of Science for literature data reported in the last five years (2015-2019) on levels of at least six key PBDE congeners in abovementioned matrices. According to our summarized data, significant PBDE mass concentrations/fractions are still being detected in various sample types across the world, which implies that PBDE contamination is an ongoing problem. Secondary sources of PBDEs like contaminated soils and landfills, especially those with electronic and electrical waste (e-waste), represent a particular risk to the future and therefore require a special attention of scientists.
