C-H functionalization at the alpha-position of heterocycles has become a rapidly growing area of research. Herein, a cheap and efficient photochemical method was developed for the C-H functionalization of heterocycles. Phenylglyoxylic acid (PhCOCOOH) could behave as an alternative to metal-based catalysts and organic dyes and provided a very general and wide array of photochemical C-H alkylation, alkenylation, and alkynylation, as well as C-N bond forming reaction methodologies. This novel, mild, and metal-free protocol was successfully employed in the functionalization of a wide range of C-H bonds, utilizing not only O- or N-heterocycles, but also the less studied S-heterocycles.

High levels of halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs) have been found in the marine predatory seabird great skua (Stercorarius skua) from breeding colonies in the Northeastern Atlantic, with large unexplained inter-colony variation. The present study aimed at analyzing if the HOCs occurrence in breeding great skuas in remote colonies was explained by local baseline food web exposure determined by long-range transport, or by ecological factors such as diet specialization and relative trophic position in the breeding area. The occurrence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) was analyzed in plasma of 204 adult great skuas collected over two years (2008 and 2009) and 5 colonies across the North-Atlantic from Shetland to Svalbard. The HOCs levels in plasma ranged across two orders of magnitude, from 40 to 7600 ng/g (wet weight) and differed significantly across the great skua colonies. The variation in contaminant occurrence among colonies did not reflect long-range transport through a latitudinal or remoteness gradient, as the second northernmost colony (Bjornoya), had the highest contaminant concentrations. No latitudinal or remoteness gradient was evident in the contaminant pattern among the colonies. The contaminant levels increased significantly with increasing delta N-15 values, and regurgitated pellets of undigested prey suggested that great skuas with higher delta N-15 values had a higher proportion of bird prey in their diet, mostly seabirds. In contrast, great skuas from colonies with lower delta N-15 and lower contaminant level fed mostly on fish. The enrichment of delta N-13 increased with decreasing delta N-15 and lower contaminant levels. Therefore, individual behavior of great skuas, such as migration strategies and diet specialization, rather than long-range transport and thus baseline food web exposure, explain among and within colony variance in contaminant occurrence. A copper-catalyzed regioselective [3+2] annulation of malonate-tethered acyl oximes with isatins was developed, affording valuable 2,3-dihydrooxazole-spirooxindoles in moderate to good yields with excellent diastereoselectivity. The reaction sequence involves Cu(i) initiated N-O bond cleavage, 1,5-HAT and C-N bond formation. The protocol features mild reaction conditions and broad substrate scope. DFT calculations demonstrated that the [3+2] annulation pathway is more energetically favourable in both kinetics and thermodynamics.

Modulating the hostile tumor microenvironment (TME) rather than directly killing cancer cells may be an effective strategy to improve the therapeutic benefits in cancer treatment. Herein, FeWO(X)nanosheets are constructed as cascade bioreactors to modulate the TME and enhance radiotherapy and immunotherapy of tumors. Synthesized by the thermal-decomposition method and modified by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), the obtained FeWOX-PEG with multivalent metal elements (Fe2+/3+, W5+/6+) exhibit efficient catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) for chemo-dynamic therapy (CDT). The generated high valence of metal ions (Fe3+/W6+) in FeWOX-PEG are reduced by endogenous glutathione (GSH), both leading to depletion of GSH and further amplified oxidative stress, and resulting in the reduced metal valence statuses (Fe2+/W5+) enabling cascade bioreactions. Such FeWOX-PEG bioreactors enhance the oxidative stress in the tumor and interact with X-rays, significantly improving cancer radiotherapy (RT). Furthermore, the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced inflammation caused by FeWOX-PEG in TME activates the immune system and promotes the tumor-infiltration of various types of immune cells, which working together with cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) checkpoint blockade could elicits a robust immune response to defeat tumors.

Due to their ubiquity in nature and frequent use in organic electronic materials, benzothiophenes are highly sought after. Here we set out an unprecedented procedure for the formation of benzothiophenes by the twofold vicinal C-H functionalization of arenes that does not require metal catalysis. This one-pot annulation proceeds through an interrupted Pummerer reaction/[3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement/cyclization sequence to deliver various benzothiophene products. The procedure is particularly effective for the rapid synthesis of benzothiophenes from non-prefunctionalized polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Lignin depolymerization into its aromatic monomers is necessary for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass, but cleavage of the C-O ether bonds and C-C bonds between the monomers is challenging. In this study, we investigated bond cleavage reactions of benzyl phenyl ether, diphenyl ether, and biphenyl, which served as models for lignin compounds with alpha-O-4, 4-O-5, and 5-5 linkages, respectively, by using various metal catalysts in supercritical water at 673 K and a water density of 0.5 g cm(-3) without added hydrogen gas. Benzyl phenyl ether was decomposed without catalyst. We found that palladium, platinum, and rhodium catalysts supported on carbon showed activity for cleavage of the C-O ether bonds in benzyl phenyl ether and diphenyl ether but not for the bonds between the aromatic units of biphenyl. Using anisole as a model compound, we also found that methoxy groups, which are present in lignin containing coniferyl and sinapyl alcohol monomers, were converted into phenol groups or were decomposed. The reaction conditions described herein have great potential utility for the conversion of lignin, which can be decomposed and dissolved in supercritical water, into valuable aromatic compounds.

The crude electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has caused severe contamination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the local environment, begging the question of whether wildlife like birds living at e-waste sites are suffering from adverse effects. We examined several oxidative status markers and their relationships with hepatic concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) that inhabit an e-waste site in South China. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Sigma PCBs (19100 ng/g) and Sigma PBDEs (507 ng/g) in kingfishers from e-waste site were several orders of magnitude higher than those in the species from a reference site. Correspondingly, hepatic concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in kingfishers from the e-waste site were significantly higher than those detected in the reference population, suggesting oxidative distress in the birds breeding at the e-waste site. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the liver from the exposed group were significantly lower compared with the reference group, while the opposite trend was observed for glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Significantly positive correlations were observed between PCB or PBDE concentrations and the levels of MDA and ROS; while negative correlations were found for enzymatic activities of SOD and CAT. Overall, our results may suggest a potential linkage between exposure to e-waste-derived pollutants and elevated oxidative stress, thereby indicating a potential oxidative stress-related health effects in common kingfisher breeding at the e-waste site.

Restrictions of legacy brominated flame retardants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), have resulted in increased usage of alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs). Consequently, AHFRs contamination has caused a major concern in the scientific community. However, there is limited information on their presence in marine mussels. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels collected from 22 locations in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Our results revealed that Sigma AHFRs were ubiquitous in green mussels with concentrations in the range of 1.08-7.71 ng/g lipid weight (lw). Among target AHFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), decabromodiphenyl (DBDPE) and dechlorane plus (DP) were predominant with their mean values of 1.19, 1.00 and 0.82 ng/g lw, respectively. There were negligible stereoisomer enrichments of DP in green mussels based on f(anti) values, indicating a limited bioaccumulation and metabolism of DP in green mussels. In comparison with other locations, concentrations of the AHFRs in green mussels determined here were at moderate levels. Additionally, there were significant linear relationships between some AHFRs (e.g., HBB and PBEB), suggesting their similar commercial applications and sources in the environment. The estimated daily intakes of AHFRs through consumption of green mussels by the local population in South China were 0.05-0.14 ng/kg body weight/day and 0.17-0.44 ng/kg body weight/day based on the mean and 95th concentrations, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to report AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels.

Selective catalytic hydrotreatment of lignin-derived phenols and dimeric ethers into alkanes is crucial for utilization of lignin and its fragments. Herein, we developed an efficient catalytic system with well-dispersed metal nanoparticles supported on SBA-15 synergistic with an ionic liquid. The catalytic system could catalyze the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of various monomeric and dimeric lignin-derived phenols into the corresponding alkanes under acid free conditions. The synergistic [Bmim]PF6-Ru/SBA-15 (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) catalysis exhibited the best HDO activity for ligninderived phenols and dimeric ethers with >99.0% conversion and maximum > 98.0% selectivity of the corresponding alkanes. The yield of cyclohexane from diphenyl ether was 97.7% with 100% conversion under 2 MPa H-2 at 130 degrees C for 6 h. The mechanism investigation confirmed that the Ru/SBA-15 catalyst and the anion of [Bmim] PF6 played crucial roles in the hydrogenation process and deoxidization process, respectively. The catalytic system was reused six times for HDO of diphenyl ether to test its stability.

Adhesives, flame-retardant chemicals, and paints are used in engineered wood products (EWPs) to increase some of the properties of wood. Most of the engineered wood composites, including plywood, particleboard, and fiberboard, used as furniture components contain formaldehyde resins as an adhesive. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) added formaldehyde to the list of human carcinogens (Group 1) in 2004. Flame-retardant chemicals are semi-volatile organic compounds that can migrate from the products to the air. There are developmental neurotoxic effects from flame-retardant additives, among which polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are commonly used in EWPs. The flexibility and durability of plastics are increased using phthalates, which are a class of synthetic chemicals, by adding them to the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that is used in the wood-plastic composites (WPC). Formaldehyde, PBDEs, and phthalates are toxicants that are commonly present in value-added furniture products. This review summarized the toxic effects of these chemicals from the aspect of human health and from the perspective of green products.
