C-H functionalization at the alpha-position of heterocycles has become a rapidly growing area of research. Herein, a cheap and efficient photochemical method was developed for the C-H functionalization of heterocycles. Phenylglyoxylic acid (PhCOCOOH) could behave as an alternative to metal-based catalysts and organic dyes and provided a very general and wide array of photochemical C-H alkylation, alkenylation, and alkynylation, as well as C-N bond forming reaction methodologies. This novel, mild, and metal-free protocol was successfully employed in the functionalization of a wide range of C-H bonds, utilizing not only O- or N-heterocycles, but also the less studied S-heterocycles.

Palladium nitrsosyl carboxylates Pd-3(NO)(2)(CX3CO2)(4)(ArH)(2) (I: X=Cl, Ar=Ph; II: X=F, Ar=Tol) are found to be effective catalysts for C-H/C-H oxidative homocoupling of arenes bearing electron-donor as well as electron-withdrawing groups (EWG). Trifluoroacetate complex II is found to be more promising due to higher stability under the reaction conditions. Complex II also shows high performance in intramolecular coupling in diarylsulfides, diarylethers and diarylamines giving corresponding dibenzothiophenes, dibenzofurans and carbazoles with yields ranged from moderate to high. The plausible mechanism is studied by DFT computational analysis basing on Pd-3 linear complexes as major active species. It was found that two deprotonation steps proceed in two different ways: for the first deprotonation SEAr is most probable pathway while for the second one concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) is preferable. That can explain high tolerance of the system to different substrates: SEAr is favorable in the presence of electron donor group and EWG facilitate CMD. NO group was found to be involved into the CMD pathway and that is the rate-determining step with the highest activation barrier.

To date, many kinds of chelating extractants have been developed, however, many of the good extractants are insoluble in aliphatic solvents. In the present study, cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) was assessed as a solvent for extractants to develop new solvent extraction systems. Many of the extractants (100 mM) were soluble in CPME. The extraction behavior of metal ions using a typical chelating extractant, 8-quinolinol (HQ) in CPME, was studied. The extraction profiles of metal ions using HQ in CPME were similar to those in toluene, whereas metal ions were extracted using HQ in 1-octanol and chloroform under lower pH conditions. The extraction reaction of In(III) using HQ in CPME was confirmed by slope analysis. A 3 : 1 complex between HQ and In(III) was formed in CPME by a proton exchange reaction, and the extraction equilibrium constant was determined. In(III), extracted using HQ in CPME, was quantitatively recovered using mineral acids. From the results, CPME was found to be a potential alternative solvent to other toxic organic solvents for the development of a solvent extraction system.

The main purpose of this study is to facilitate fragrance development on the basis of scientific knowledge. To this end, data on 314 perfumery raw materials (PRMs) showing the relationship between PRM odor intensity and gas concentration were obtained, and a calculation model for the data was then developed with the following features: (1) maximum PRM coverage, (2) calculating values implying odor intensity from only arbitrary gas concentration, and (3) estimating odor intensity from the calculated values directly and easily. To verify the prediction accuracy of this model, the predicted odor intensity was compared with the evaluated value for both single component and a mixture, and the same degree of root-mean-square error (RMSE) was confirmed. RMSE in the single component was 6.22 while that in the mixture was 6.69. Thus, the odor intensity of a PRM or mixture can be predicted from arbitrary gas concentrations.

Extensive characterizations, mainly by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques, are reported for co-crystalline (CC) poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)-oxide (PPO) films with many different low-molecular-mass guest molecules. These characterizations are also reported for the corresponding nanoporous crystalline (NC) phases, as obtained by suitable guest-removal procedures. Two well-separated NC forms, hereafter named alpha and beta, are obtained by guest removal from two well-separated groups of CC forms. alpha and beta NC forms can be easily recognized by reflections in WAXD patterns as well as by suitable FTIR crystalline peaks. Density and degree of crystallinity measurements confirm that both NC phases exhibit a density definitely smaller than for the amorphous phase (rho(am) = 1.04 g/cm(3) rho(beta) = 0.95 g/cm(3) > rho(alpha) = 0.93 g/cm(3)). Density functional theory calculations combined with geometrical analysis on PPO model systems indicate conformations suitable to fit the observed chain periodicities of the two crystalline forms (c = 5.28 and 5.47 angstrom, for alpha and beta NC forms, respectively).

Amphiphilic thermoresponsive block helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) was synthesized by the polymerization of phenyl isocyanide using a Pd(ii) complex catalyst as an initiator. The polymer could self-assemble into spherical micelles. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the micelle solution was adjusted by changing the molar ratio of the hydrophobic segment to the hydrophilic segment and finally optimized to be 41 degrees C at a molar ratio of 1 : 2. After loading Fe3O4 nanoparticles, the magnetic complex micelles were prepared. The magnetic complex micelles demonstrated reversible thermoresponsiveness and obvious magnetic hyperthermia. Cell viability measurements indicated that the nanomaterials were well-biocompatible and nontoxic. The magnetic complex micelles could be used as nanocarriers to achieve controlled release of doxorubicin (DOX) by altering the temperature. Intracellular experiments demonstrated that the magnetic complex micelles showed excellent anticancer synergistic thermo-chemotherapy performance under an alternating magnetic field (AMF) owing to magnetic hyperthermia from micelle-loaded Fe3O4 nanoparticles and effective drug release due to the morphology change of thermoresponsive poly(phenyl isocyanide)s.

In the present study, copper complex supported on surface-modified Fe3O4/SiO2 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2-Glycerole-Cu(II)) was successfully fabricated and characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray mapping, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), N-2 adsorption and desorption (BET) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) techniques. The stability of a and beta nanoporous-crystalline (NC) forms of Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide (PPO), in the presence of guest molecules leading to crystallization in a and beta-form (alpha and beta-guests), is explored. Sorption of liquid guests at 30 degrees C and 60 degrees C is studied both for NC films and NC aerogels. WAXD and FTIR characterizations show that, for all considered conditions, NC alpha-phases after guest sorption/desorption remain unaltered. NC beta-phases, on the contrary, after alpha-guest sorption can be transformed in co-crystalline (CC) alpha-phases that after guest desorption are transformed in NC alpha-phases. All conducted experiments also show that possible planar orientations of NC films (c//or c perpendicular to orientations) remain essentially unaltered, after sorption of all considered guest molecules. The presently discovered beta ->alpha transition constitutes a route to obtain unoriented alpha-form films, which till now were not available by known preparation procedures.

Waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) contain a high level of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), among which polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are the most widely used additive BFRs. PBDEs are considered to be a type of persistent organic pollutants (POPS). The efficient removal/degradation of PBDEs in waste PCBs is an urgent problem in electronic waste treatment, but the degradation of PBDEs is a great challenge due to their extreme stability and persistence in nature. In this study, a novel management strategy was developed for removal and degradation of PBDEs in waste PCBs by using a simple subcritical methanol (SubCM) process. The results showed that reaction temperature, residence time, solid-to-liquid ratio, and additive NaOH are key factors influencing the removal of PBDEs from waste PCBs. Under optimal conditions (200 degrees C, 60 min, 1:20 g/mL), the removal efficiency of Sigma(8) PBDEs from waste PCBs could reach 91.3% and 98.8% for the proposed process of SubCM and SubCM + NaOH, respectively. When the temperature is below 200 degrees C, highly brominated PBDEs congeners in waste PCBs were degraded into 2,’3,4′,6-Tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE71) and 2,4,4′-Tribromodiphenyl ether (BDE28) after SubCM treatment. 4-Bromophenyl ether (BDE4) and diphenyl ether were generated by the further debromination of BDE71 and BDE28 with the increase of treatment temperature. The debromination temperature of PBDEs congeners in SubCM could be markedly lowered by adding 4 g/L of NaOH. The complete debromination of PBDEs congeners in waste PCBs could be achieved at 300 degrees C and 250 degrees C for the developed process of SubCM and SubCM + NaOH, respectively. Electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and large electroactive surface areas are the most important factors in determining the performance of various flexible electrodes in energy storage devices. Herein, a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly-induced metal electrodeposition approach is introduced to prepare a variety of highly porous 3D-current collectors with high flexibility, metallic conductivity, and large surface area. In this study, a few metal nanoparticle (NP) layers are LbL-assembled onto insulating paper for the preparation of conductive paper. Subsequent Ni electroplating of the metal NP-coated substrates reduces the sheet resistance from approximate to 10(3) to <0.1 omega sq(-1) while maintaining the porous structure of the pristine paper. Particularly, this approach is completely compatible with commercial electroplating processes, and thus can be directly extended to electroplating applications using a variety of other metals in addition to Ni. After depositing high-energy MnO NPs onto Ni-electroplated papers, the areal capacitance increases from 68 to 811 mF cm(-2) as the mass loading of MnO NPs increases from 0.16 to 4.31 mg cm(-2).
