The suspension is then cooled and filtered and the solid recovered by filtration is dried yielding 3.1 g of N-(7-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphth-2-yl)-2-hydroxy-3-[1-(p-toluenesulfonyl)indol-4-yloxy]propanamine hydrochloride; m.p. 228-231 C.

The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give the crude product which was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel (100 g, AcOEt/heptane 1:9). 1-Bromo-3-iodo-5-methoxy-benzene (2.12 g, 60percent) was obtained as a yellow oil, which crystallized quickly upon standing.
