The direct sulfonation is a cheap process but introduces the valuable sulfonic acid groups onto the backbone of aromatic polymers for proton exchange membrane fuel cell applications. However, the chain-scission during sulfonation degrades the polymer backbone by cleavage of the linkages between the arylene rings. If the sulfonation is conducted at a relatively high temperature for long time, the degradation may be significant. In this paper, the chain-scission mechanisms of the typical aromatic polymers are studied in terms of transition states and activation energies using density functional theory calculations, and the improvement of the overall performances of sulfonated proton conducting materials is discussed.

A new strategy to chemically synthesize exchange-coupled SmCo5/Sm2Co17 nanocomposites by in situ decomposition of SmCox(5 < x < 8.5) is reported in this work. Our synthesis starts with the fabrication of Co/Sm2O3 (Sm to Co atomic ratio of Sm/Co = 1:4.2), which can be reduced into 40-nm SmCo5 single crystal nanoparticles by Ca under the protection of CaO, showing a high coercivity of 2.85 T and saturation magnetization (M-s) of 0.0671 A.m(2).g(-1). By changing the Sm/Co to 1:4.5, 1:4.8 and 1:5.2, SmCo5/Sm2Co17 nanocomposites with different proportions were acquired using the same process. Owing to the in situ decomposition of SmCox intermediate, the small size (both of their size less than 10 nm) and uniform phase distribution were achieved in our nanocomposites. Thus, the as-prepared nanocomposites display a strong exchange-coupling interaction. As a consequence, SmCo5/Sm2Co17(Sm/Co = 1:5.2) exhibits a coercivity of 1.23 T and enhanced M-7T(magnetization at 7 T) of 0.0812 A.m(2).g(-1), increasing by 21% than pure SmCo5. Our synthesis provides a new protocol to prepare exchange-coupled high-performance nanocomposites. SDS of cas: 103-50-4. Obtaining bulk materials ordered at the nanoscale using nanoparticles as building blocks is a new challenge for scientists and is of primary interest in some research areas. In this study, we developed a simple one-pot route towards nanostructured hybrid materials based on uranium oxide through a non-hydrolytic condensation process under mild solvothermal conditions (T = 160 degrees C) using ditopic organic linkers as structuring agents. The obtained materials present a sand rose morphology composed of agglomerated nanometric sheets with a lamellar substructure. Nanometric sheets are composed of inorganic fringes consisting of a studtite phase [(UO2)O-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O that alternates with organic fringes formed by the structuring organic linker. A multiparametric study based on SAXS experiments and TEM analyses has highlighted the control of structural parameters by varying some synthesis conditions. The interlamellar distances are tunable from 1.60 nm to 1.94 nm through the length of the structuring linker and the inter-sheet distance from 1.85 nm to 2.10 nm through synthesis temperature. This efficient one-pot route appears to be very promising for the production of tunable multiscale nanostructured hybrid materials and can be implemented in many research areas, paving the way for various applications.

Unsupported nanoporous gold (AuNPore) is a highly efficient, practically applicable, and recyclable catalyst for hydrodebromination of aromatic bromides. The AuNPore-catalyzed hydrodebromination of aromatic bromides proceeded smoothly at relatively low hydrogen pressure and temperature to achieve good to excellent yields of the corresponding non-bromine variants. Concentrated solar power (CSP) is one of the emerging renewable energy technology, where sunlight is concentrated from a large area and is stored in a collector filled with heat-transfer fluid (HTF). The current work reports the synthesis of novel HTF based on menthol-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs). DES consisting of a hydrogen bond acceptor, namely, DL-menthol and a hydrogen bond donor (oleyl alcohol), has been prepared and explored to evaluate its effectiveness as a thermal fluid. The thermal properties, namely, viscosity, density, thermal conductivity (TC), and heat capacity, are measured and compared with both conventional and commercial solvents within the temperature range T = 298.15-353.15 K. The density of DES was found to decrease with increase in temperature, while the rheological measurements suggest a Newtonian fluid with its shear viscosity decreasing exponentially with increasing temperature. The TC of the DES was found to be similar to 0.161 W/m K, which decreases linearly with temperature, while a contrary was observed for heat capacity. Further, the performance of these solvents has been evaluated in a forced convective heat-transfer configuration under laminar flow conditions with N-Re = 105, 155, and 260. The convective heat-transfer experiments demonstrated the fact that the thermal entrance length of the DES is very large because of its high viscosity and low TC. The convective heat-transfer data, namely, heat-transfer coefficient and Nusselt number, were compared with the in-house AnuPravaha CFD simulator under laminar conditions. From the obtained thermophysical properties, it is confirmed that the synthesized DES can be used as a next-generation heat storage media in the CSP plant.

Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were determined in surface sediment from five estuaries of central coasts of Vietnam to understand the spatial distributions and seasonal variations. The contamination pattern was in the order: PCBs (9.72-3730 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > PBDEs (11.8-311 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > DDTs (0.462-26.7 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > HCHs (0.491-22.6 ng g(-1) dry wt.) > endosulfan compounds (0.196-19.4 ng g(-1) dry wt.). DDTs and HCHs showed a little geographical variation, whereas PCBs and PBDEs exhibited clearer spatial distribution trend. Elevated concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs were detected in some sites in Nghe An and Quang Birth Province, which could be related to the human activities such as tourism, transportation, and domestic consumption. Seasonal variations of DDTs and HCHs were observed, showing higher residues in rainy seasons.

A simple method for the synthesis of nano crystalline ZSM-5 and Beta zeolites with trimodal porosity was developed using starch coated silica nanospheres (as silica precursor) for generating interparticle porosity (50-200 nm); propyltriethoxysilane was used as an additive for generating intercrystalline mesopores (2-50 nm) in the presence of microporous zeolite porogen. Loading of starch and propyltriethoxysilane additive played a pivotal role in obtaining trimodal porosity with very small size zeolite nanoparticles having high surface area and pore volume. The possible growth mechanism for the fabrication of trimodal porous zeolite is presented. The resultant zeolite demonstrated excellent acidity and activity in the liquid phase acid catalyzed reactions such as esterification of hexanoic/oleic acid with benzyl alcohol, condensation of benzaldehyde and 2-hydroxyacetophenone, and Friedel-Crafts alkylation followed by ring closure reaction for the synthesis of vitamin E when compared to conventional zeolite with excellent recyclability. Such an economical starch mediated synthesis strategy can be extended to other zeolite frameworks and similar heterogeneous catalytic materials.

A micro fabricated chip-based wearable air sampler was used to monitor the personnel exposure of volatile chemical concentrations in microenvironments. Six teenagers participated in this study and 14 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including naphthalene, 3-decen-1-ol, hexanal, nonanal, methyl salicylate and limonene gave the highest abundance during routine daily activity. VOC exposure associated with daily activities and the location showed strong agreements with two of the participant’s results. One of these subjects had the highest exposure to methyl salicylate that was supported by the use of a topical analgesic balm containing this compound. Environmental based air quality monitoring followed by the personnel exposure studies provided additional evidence associated to the main locations where the participants traveled. Toluene concentrations observed at a gas station were exceptionally high, with the highest amount observed at 1213.1 ng m(-3). One subject had the highest exposure to toluene and the GPS data showed clear evidence of activities neighboring a gas station. This study shows that this wearable air sampler has potential applications including hazardous VOC exposure monitoring in occupational hazard assessment for certain professions, for example in industries that involve direct handling of petroleum products.

Today, using new energy storage systems for peak shaving and load leveling with the approach of maximizing the efficiency of energy systems is inevitable. In the present study, a cogeneration integrated structure of power and cooling using liquefied natural gas regasification and solar collectors is developed and analyzed. In this regard, the purposes can be achieved by producing liquid air at an off-peak time and storing it as a cryogenic energy storage system and recovering it on-peak time. This new integrated structure generates 11.66 MW power and 4.502 MW cooling at the on-peak time. A Kalina-based combined cooling and power cycle and a gas turbine power generation unit are used to generate power from liquid air. Phase change material is used to store the heat from the compressed air entering the liquefaction stage (at the off-peak time) and recovering it at the on-peak time as the heat source of the Kalina cycle. Also, the solar parabolic trough collector provided with Zahedan climatic conditions the heat required for the direct expansion section. The electrical storage, round-trip, energy storage, and exergy efficiencies of the proposed energy storage system are 57.62%, 45.44%, 79.87%, and 40.17%, respectively. The most exergy destruction belongs to the heat exchangers section, which accounts for 50.85% of the total exergy destruction. One of the important results of the parametric study is the increase of round-trip and electrical storage efficiencies up to 47.59% and 61.60%, respectively, by minimizing the pressure of the inlet air to the liquefaction stage while maximizing the pressure of the liquid air inlet to the power generation stage.

Single-atom catalysts are emerging as primary catalysts for many reactions due to their 100% utilization of active metal centers leading to high catalytic efficiencies. Herein, we report the use of a single-atom Co catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of the -O-4 bonds of lignin model compounds at a low oxygen pressure. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethanol up to 95% with high selectivities was achieved with a variety of substrates investigated. The reusability of the Co catalyst with a high catalytic efficiency indicates its potential application in the oxidative cleavage of C-O bonds.
