Benzyl alcohol is a versatile reaction medium for the synthesis of different types of nanoparticles. Its ability to act as an oxygen source gave access to metal oxide nanoparticles, while its reducing properties can be harnessed for the preparation of metals. Here we report the synthesis of Pd and PdCu nanoparticles in benzyl alcohol supplemented by a detailed mechanistic study for both systems. To elucidate the chemical formation mechanism of the Pd nanoparticles, we performed in situ attenuated total reflection ultraviolet-visible (ATR-UV-vis) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), providing information on the organic as well as on the inorganic side of the reaction. Potential gaseous products were analyzed by in situ gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). We observed the formation of benzaldehyde, toluene, and dibenzyl ether as the three main organic products. The formation of the PdCu alloy nanoparticles was studied by ex situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). A time-resolved study of the synthesis at 100 degrees C indicated that initially three types of particles formed, composed of an alloy with high Pd content, an alloy with high content of copper, and palladium particles, and only later in the reaction course they transformed into an alloy with a Pd-to-Cu ratio close to 1. A new strategy to chemically synthesize exchange-coupled SmCo5/Sm2Co17 nanocomposites by in situ decomposition of SmCox(5 < x < 8.5) is reported in this work. Our synthesis starts with the fabrication of Co/Sm2O3 (Sm to Co atomic ratio of Sm/Co = 1:4.2), which can be reduced into 40-nm SmCo5 single crystal nanoparticles by Ca under the protection of CaO, showing a high coercivity of 2.85 T and saturation magnetization (M-s) of 0.0671 A.m(2).g(-1). By changing the Sm/Co to 1:4.5, 1:4.8 and 1:5.2, SmCo5/Sm2Co17 nanocomposites with different proportions were acquired using the same process. Owing to the in situ decomposition of SmCox intermediate, the small size (both of their size less than 10 nm) and uniform phase distribution were achieved in our nanocomposites. Thus, the as-prepared nanocomposites display a strong exchange-coupling interaction. As a consequence, SmCo5/Sm2Co17(Sm/Co = 1:5.2) exhibits a coercivity of 1.23 T and enhanced M-7T(magnetization at 7 T) of 0.0812 A.m(2).g(-1), increasing by 21% than pure SmCo5. Here, we report on a reproducible one-pot synthesis of high-quality and monodispersed CdS semiconducting nanocrystals (NCs) by mixing precursors cadmium acetate and elemental sulfur into the new solvent system of dibenzyl ether and oleylamine without using any extra reagent or precursor activator. The NCs (5 nm) exhibited a dominant band-edge emission with a good photoluminescence quantum yield of 13.76% without trap emission. The CdS NCs were characterized using UV?Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The practical efficiency of the synthesized NCs was proved by applying the synthesized CdS NCs as the tracer in the engineering of an immunosandwich biosensor to evaluate the cardiac troponin (cTn) marker for the diagnosis and monitoring of myocardial infarction (MI). The biosensor revealed significant analytical efficiency with the limit of detection of 2 ng L-1 and the linear dynamic range of 5?1000 ng L-1, which is lower than the existing cutoff values (13?20 ng L-1). Having capitalized on the anodic stripping voltammetry method, the screen-printed biosensor could efficiently detect the cTn markers. Therefore, the biosensor is proposed to be used in clinical settings for fast, sensitive, and accurate monitoring of cTn markers.

The objective of the study was to determine the human serum elimination half-life of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) adjusted for ongoing exposure in subjects moving from a higher exposure region (North America) to a lower exposure region (Australia). The study population was comprised of exchange students and long-term visitors from North America moving to Brisbane, Australia (N = 27) and local residents (N = 23) who were followed by repeated serum sampling every other month. The local residents were sampled to adjust for ongoing exposure in Australia. Only one visitor remained in Australia for a period of time similar to the elimination half-life and had a sufficiently high initial concentration of PBDEs to derive a half-life. This visitor arrived in Australia in March of 2011 and remained in the country for 1.5 years. Since the magnitude of PBDE exposure is lower in Australia than in North America we observed an apparent 1st order elimination curve over time from which we have estimated the serum elimination half-lives for BDE28, BDE47, BDE99, BDE100, and BDE153 to be 0.942, 1.19, 1.03, 2.16, and 4.12 years, respectively. Uncertainty in the estimates were estimated using a Monte Carlo simulation. The human serum elimination half-life adjusted for ongoing exposure can allow us to assess the effectiveness and reduction in exposure in the general population following phase out of commercial penta- and octaBDE in 2004 in the United States. Mesoporous TiO2(B) whisker was firstly applied as a support for synthesizing the novel sulfated solid superacid (SO42-/TiO2(B)). According to NH3-TPD, TG and Py-IR characterization results, it was found that the similar amount of sulfate group on TiO2(B) and anatase showed significantly different acid characteristics and catalytic performances. The total acid amount of SO42-/TiO2(B) was about 1.8 times as anatase-supported sulfated solid superacid (SO42-/Anatase). Simultaneously, the SO42-/TiO2(B) possessed higher percentage of Bronsted acid and more weak-medium acid strength than SO42-/Anatase. These acidic properties endowed SO42-/TiO2(B) with the increased esterification reaction rate and decreased alkylation byproduct selectivity compared with that of SO42-/Anatase. Structure-performance analysis exhibited that there were more bridged bidentate sulfate groups coordinated to the TiO2(B) in SO42-/TiO2(B), which could induce more Ti cations than that of the chelating one. This was the key factor to be responsible for the unique acid characteristics of SO42-/TiO2(B). The present work provides a novel solid superacid and might open a strategy to mediate the acid characteristic for sulfated solid superacid.

The methoxyl group is the most abundant functional group of lignin and affects the properties, reactivity, and application of lignin. Efficient demethylation is always of interest in the area of lignin chemistry and application. This study demonstrated a new method for cleaving ether compounds and demethylating lignin in acidic concentrated lithium bromide (ACLB) solution under mild conditions. It was found that the ACLB system could universally cleave ether compounds except for diaryl ethers. The study on lignin model compounds (creosol, syringol, and 1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene) verified that ACLB could demethylate them to corresponding phenols. Four real lignin samples produced from various sources by different methods were also efficiently demethylated by 69-82% in ACLB. The lignin demethylation resulted in more phenolic hydroxyl groups, which benefits some downstream applications of lignin. This study also provided new insights into the cleavage of the ether bonds in lignin. In addition to the methyl-aryl ether bond, ACLB could cleave other ether bonds of lignin in beta-O-4, beta-5, and beta-beta structures except for the 4-O-5 bond in the diphenyl structure. The ether bonds were cleaved via the S(N)2 substitution except for the beta-O-4 bond, which was primarily cleaved via the benzyl cation and enol ether intermediates, leading to Hibbert’s ketones. Some of the beta-O-4 structures were transformed into benzodioxane (BD) structures, which were stable in the ACLB system.

Single-atom catalysts are emerging as primary catalysts for many reactions due to their 100% utilization of active metal centers leading to high catalytic efficiencies. Herein, we report the use of a single-atom Co catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of the -O-4 bonds of lignin model compounds at a low oxygen pressure. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethanol up to 95% with high selectivities was achieved with a variety of substrates investigated. The reusability of the Co catalyst with a high catalytic efficiency indicates its potential application in the oxidative cleavage of C-O bonds.

In-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry is a powerful tool to understand the structures and reaction mechanisms of electrochemical interfaces yet usually suffers from a low sensitivity and detection efficiency. Herein, we develop a windowless thin layer electrochemical cell design to improve the detection efficiency of in-situ Raman spectroscopy for practical nanoscale electrocatalysts. This was achieved by perforating a hole in the optical window of the cell, which not only eliminates the refraction of light by the window but also induces a meniscus thin electrolyte layer on the working electrode, thus significantly improving the detection efficiency of Raman spectra. We successfully applied thismethod to conduct in-situ Raman spectroscopy of structural evolutions of two representative Ni-Fe oxide catalysts (layered double hydroxides and spinel oxides) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis. It was shown that both catalysts underwent surface transformation to oxyhydroxides and formed active oxygen species at OER relevant potentials. However, the extent of the surface transformation was much lower on the Ni-Fe spinel catalyst, accounting for its lower OER activity. We further show that adding a carbon support can promote the surface transformation of Ni-Fe spinel to oxyhydroxides, thus significantly increasing the electrocatalytic activities. The established windowless thin layer method provides a new way to conduct in-situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy of a wide range of materials and may be also combined with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic methods.

Iron-based metal-organic framework VNU-20 was utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst for cascade reactions between ketoximes and dibenzyl ether to produce 2,4,6-triphenylpyridines. Additionally, benzyl alcohol and (dimethoxymethyl) benzene could be used as an alternative starting materials for the transformation. The oxidant exhibited a remarkable impact on the reactions, and di-tertbutylperoxide was the most appropriate candidate. The VNU-20 displayed higher efficiency than many homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The catalyst was reusable for the cascade reactions without a noticeable deterioration in catalytic activity. This transformation is new, and would offer alternative routes to triphenylpyridines utilizing ketoximes as building blocks.
