In this work, Al grafted SBA-16 (Al-SBA-16) is converted into a fully crystalline hierarchical mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite with hydrothermal stability by steam assisted crystallization under controlled conditions. The secondary mesoporosity is due to reorganization and recrystallization events happening upon steaming the precursor. Two mesoporous aluminosilicates (Al-SBA-16s) are used as the precursors of zeolites. The precursors are obtained by post-synthetic Al grafting on the silica walls of SBA-16 with aluminium isopropoxide and sodium aluminate. Mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites obtained from the Al-SBA-16 precursors and commercial ZSM-5 are characterized using XRD, XRF, FT-IR, TEM, N-2 adsorption, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR, and TPD of NH3. The results indicated the presence of intraparticle mesoporosity in the prepared mesoporous zeolites and they have comparable crystallinity with commercial ZSM-5. Catalytic activity of the synthesized mesoporous zeolites in benzylation of mesitylene is found to be comparatively more than commercial ZSM-5, which shows existence of micro/meso hierarchical structure in the mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites. The aluminium sources, aluminium isopropoxide and sodium aluminate have a remarkable influence on the textural, acidity, and hydrothermal stability characteristics of the synthesized mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites.

Graphene has extensive application in various prospects due to its good stability, high conductivity, and large specific surface area. However, the dispersion of graphene in solvents can significantly affect the preparation of graphene-supported metal nanoparticles through wet chemistry methods. In this work, a density functional theory calculation is carried out to study the interaction between graphene and various solvent molecules. According to the calculation, there is a correlation between the interaction energy (E-a) and the dispersion concentration of graphene in different solvents. In addition, we use methanol, ethanol, or 2-propanol as solvents to prepare graphene-supported palladium nanoparticles. The size of the nanoparticles decreased with stronger interaction between graphene and solvent molecules when using methanol, ethanol, or 2-propanol as solvents. Furthermore, there is a good correlation with the size of the nanoparticles and interaction energies between graphene and solvent molecules, which confirmed that E-a is an effective descriptor for graphene dispersion in solvents. This work provides insightful information to understand the dispersion mechanism of graphene in solvents and preparation of graphene-supported metal nanoparticles through wet chemistry methods.

The design of novel materials to use simultaneously in an ocular system for driven therapeutics and wound healing is still challenging. Here, we produced nanocomposites of tungsten disulfide carriers with spherical cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) as core inside a cubic iron oxide NPs shell (WS2/s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that 10 nm s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4 NPs were attached on the WS2 sheet surfaces. The cytotoxicity of the WS2 sheets and nanocomposites were evaluated on bovine cornea endothelial cells (BCECs) using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay for a duration of three days. The MTT assay results showed low toxicity of the WS2 sheets on BCECs by 67% cell viability at 100 mu g/mL in 24 h, while the nanocomposites show 50% cell viability in the same conditions. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of nanocomposites revealed the excellent T-2-weighted imaging with an r(2) contrast of 108 mM(-1) S-1. The in vitro photothermal therapy based on WS2 sheets and WS2/s-CoFe2O4 @c-Fe3O4 nanocomposites using 808 nm laser showed that the maximum thermal energy dispatched in medium at different applied power densities (1200 mw, 1800, 2200, 2600 mW) was for 0.1 mg/mL of the sample solution. The migration assay of BCECs showed that the wound healing was approximately 20% slower for the cell exposed by nanocomposites compared with the control (no exposed BCECs). We believe that WS2/s-CoFe2O4@c-Fe3O4 nanocomposites have a synergic effect as photothermal therapy agents for eye diseases and could be a target in an ocular system using MRI.

A total of 11 bacterial strains capable of completely degrading 2-butoxyethanol (2-BE) were isolated from forest soil, a biotrickling filter, a bioscrubber, and activated sludge, and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Eight of these strains belong to the genus Pseudomonas; the remaining three strains are Hydrogenophaga pseudoflava BOE3, Gordonia terrae BOE5, and Cupriavidus oxalaticus BOE300. In addition to 2-BE, all isolated strains were able to grow on 2-ethoxyethanol and 2-propoxyethanol, ethanol, n-hexanol, ethyl acetate, 2-butoxyacetic acid (2-BAA), glyoxylic acid, and n-butanol. Apart from the only gram-positive strain isolated, BOE5, none of the strains were able to grow on the nonpolar ethers diethyl ether, di-n-butyl ether, n-butyl vinyl ether, and dibenzyl ether, as well as on 1-butoxy-2-propanol. Strains H. pseudoflava BOE3 and two of the isolated pseudomonads, Pseudomonas putida BOE100 and P. vancouverensis BOE200, were studied in more detail. The maximum growth rates of strains BOE3, BOE100, and BOE200 at 30 degrees C were 0.204 h(-1) at 4 mM, 0.645 h(-1) at 5 mM, and 0.395 h(-1) at 6 mM 2-BE, respectively. 2-BAA, n-butanol, and butanoic acid were detected as potential metabolites during the degradation of 2-BE. These findings indicate that the degradation of 2-BE by the isolated gram-negative strains proceeds via oxidation to 2-BAA with subsequent cleavage of the ether bond yielding glyoxylate and n-butanol. Since Gordonia terrae BOE5 was the only strain able to degrade nonpolar ethers like diethyl ether, the degradation pathway of 2-BE may be different for this strain.

A series of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors based on the resorcinol diphenyl ether scaffold were discovered by incorporating hydrophilic moieties into the side chain and converting into the corresponding hydrochloride salt. Among these compounds, P18 showed the highest inhibitory activity against PD-1/PD-L1 with an IC50 value of 9.1 nM in a homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence binding assay. Besides, P18 promoted HepG2 cell death dose dependently in a HepG2/PD-L1 and Jurkat/PD-1 coculture cell model. Moreover, P18 was highly effective in suppressing tumor growth in an immune checkpoint humanized mouse model without apparent toxicity. Here we present a protocol for analyses of axon regeneration and density in unsectioned adult mouse spinal cord. This includes methods for injury and tracing of dorsal column sensory and corticospinal axons; clearing and staining of unsectioned spinal cord; visualization of axon degeneration and regeneration in cleared and uncleared specimens using two-photon microscopy; and either manual or semi-automatic analysis of axon density and regeneration in 3D space using Imaris and ImageJ software. Dynamic self-assembly represents an effective approach to form energy-dissipative structures by introducing interactions among multiple building blocks with a continuous energy supply. Time-dependent magnetic fields are treated as convenient energy inputs to construct such a dynamic self assembled system. The induced interactions can be further tuned by modulating the input field, resulting in a diversity of assembled patterns. However, formation of a functional dynamic pattern with controllability remains a challenge. Herein, we report the formation and pattern control of dynamically self-assembled magnetic droplets at an air liquid interface, energized by a precessing magnetic field. The formation process involves the assembly of magnetic microparticles into particle chains inside droplets, and then highly ordered patterns are generated by balancing the induced interactions among droplets. By modulating the input field, the interactions and collective behaviors are adjusted and the pattern can be reversibly tuned, i.e., expand and shrink, in a controlled manner. Furthermore, the assembled droplets are able to be steered in two-dimensional as an entity by applying a magnetic field gradient. Utilizing dynamic pattern control and steerability of the assembled structure, cargoes are successfully trapped, transported, and released in a noncontact fashion, indicating that the dynamically assembled droplets can act as a reconfigurable untethered robotic end-effector for manipulation.

Optical tissue clearing using dibenzyl ether (DBE) or BABB (1 part benzyl alcohol and 2 parts benzyl benzoate) is easy in application and allows deep-tissue imaging of a wide range of specimens. However, in both substances, optical clearing and storage times of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP)-expressing specimens are limited due to the continuous formation of peroxides and aldehydes, which severely quench fluorescence. Stabilisation of purified DBE or BABB by addition of the antioxidant propyl gallate efficiently preserves fluorescence signals in EGFP-expressing samples for more than a year. This enables longer clearing times and improved tissue transparency with higher fluorescence signal intensity. The here introduced clearing protocol termed stabilised DISCO allows to image spines in a whole mouse brain and to detect faint changes in the activity-dependent expression pattern of tdTomato.

We report herein the possibility to perform the hydrosilylation of carbonyls using actinide complexes as catalysts. While complexes of the uranyl ion [UO2](2+) have been poorly considered in catalysis, we show the potentialities of the Lewis acid [UO2(OTf)(2)] (1) in the catalytic hydrosilylation of a series of aldehydes. [UO2(OTf)(2)] proved to be a very active catalyst affording distinct reduction products depending on the nature of the reductant. With Et3SiH, a number of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes are reduced into symmetric ethers, while (Pr3SiH)-Pr-i yielded silylated alcohols. Studies of the reaction mechanism led to the isolation of aldehyde/uranyl complexes, [UO2(OTf)(2)(4-Me2N-PhCHO)(3)], [UO2(mu-kappa(2)-OTf)(2)(PhCHO)](n), and [UO2(mu-kappa(2)-OTf(kappa(1)-OTf)(PhCHO)(2)](2), which have been fully characterized by NMR, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
