Nanosized self-assemblies built from inorganic nanoparticles and polymer ligands have the potential to generate personalized theranostics systems for diagnostic imaging and cancer therapy. However, most of the theranostics systems suffer from poor targeting activity, insensitive diagnosis and drug leakage, leading to poor treatment results. In this study, a hierarchical tumor acidity-responsive magnetic nanobomb (termed HTAMN) was developed for photodynamic therapy and diagnostic imaging. The HTAMNs were formed through the self-assembly of chlorin e6 (Ce6)-functionalized polypeptide ligand, methoxy poly (ethyleneglycol)-block-poly (dopamineethylenediamine-2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride)-L-glutamate-Ce6 [mPEG-b-P (Dopa-Ethy-DMMA)LG-Ce6] and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). Negatively charged HTAMNs circulate in the blood for prolonged periods and promote tumor retention by passive targeting to the tumor. Once the HTAMNs arrive at the tumor location, the acidic extracellular tumor environment reverses the surface charge of the HTAMNs, resulting in tumor accumulation and cellular uptake. Moreover, in response to the more acidic environment inside cells, the photosensitizers are activated resulted in enhanced diagnostic imaging and cancer treatment. The in vitro and in vivo results indicate the effective tumor accumulation, internalization, diagnostic sensitivity and superior photodynamic therapy effect of the HTAMNs. Therefore, designing smart HTAMNs can promote the rapid development of cancer theranostics for clinical implementation.

Non-equilibrium plasma technology provides an unconventional but promising solution for the cleaning of tar contaminated bio-syngas in biomass gasification. This work is focused on the reforming of mixed naphthalene (C10H8) and toluene (C7H8) as typical single ring and double ring tar model components using a gliding arc discharge (GAD) reactor. The influence of naphthalene content, steam/carbon molar ratio and discharge power on the destruction of C10H8 and C7H8 was evaluated to understand their effects on the tar conversion, gas yield, and the energy consumption. Adding H2O to the plasma process forms OH radicals, creating additional reaction routes for the step-wised oxidation of naphthalene, toluene and their fragments towards the production of CO, CO2, and water. The highest conversion of naphthalene and toluene (similar to 80% overall) was obtained when the steam/carbon molar ratio changed between 1.0 and 1.5, which was dependent on the balance between two opposite effects due to the presence of steam: positive effect of OH radicals and negative effect of electron attachment on water molecules. The highest energy efficiency (53.6 g/kWh) was obtained for the conversion of mixed tar compounds, which is by far the highest in previously reported works. CO, H-2 and C2H2 were the major gases with the highest CO yield of 38.6% and H-2 yield of 39.1%. Emission spectroscopic diagnostics was employed to understand the contribution of chemically reactive species to the GAD reaction. Possible reaction pathways in the plasma reforming of mixed naphthalene and toluene were proposed based on the plasma spectroscopic diagnostics coupled with a comprehensive analysis of major gas products and condensable by-products.

Many experimental studies have demonstrated that titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) could induce adverse health effects in vivo and in vitro. But epidemiological evidence and biomarkers related to early health effects are still lacking. This study aimed to explore biomarkers in the urine samples of workers occupationally exposed to a relatively low concentration of TiO2 NPs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jinan, China, involving 132 employees of a TiO2 NP manufacturing plant, among which the exposed group and control group were 1 : 1 matched by confounding factors such as gender, age, BMI, smoking and drinking. Untargeted metabolomics was performed in urine samples using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) technology. The differential metabolites between the TiO2 NP exposed group and the control group were analyzed and then screened for potential biomarkers using bioinformatics methods. Metabolomics found a total of 1760 differentially expressed metabolites in the TiO2 NP exposed group, of which 60 differential metabolites were simultaneously confirmed by one-dimensional and multi-dimensional statistical analysis. Among these 60 differential metabolites, the relative expression of 27 metabolites increased, and the remaining 33 decreased. Pathway enrichment analysis further found that the metabolic pathway of long chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase deficiency (Lcad) was significantly enriched. Ten differential metabolites were selected as potential biomarkers of occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs using machine learning methods, including dibenzyl ether, quassimarin, tryptophan, etc. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) of these potential biomarkers showed good sensitivity and specificity. These potential biomarkers also had biological basis for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs. Therefore, urine metabolites represented by dibenzyl ether are considered as good biomarkers of early health effects for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs.

A novel ferrierite type zeolite named as IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) with pore sizes of 14 x 12-ring (R) was post synthesized by simply interlayer silylation of lamellar precursor Al-PLS-3 taking 1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclosilone (TMCS) as silane. Its catalytic properties were tested by isomerization/disproportionation of m-xylene, alkylation/acylation of anisole with benzyl alcohol/acetic anhydride. The catalytic performance of IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) was compared with Al-PLS-3 (10 x 8-R) and IEZ-Al-PLS-3(1Si) (12 x 10-R) which were prepared by calcination or silylation using dimethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS) as silane of as made Al-PLS-3 respectively. Since these materials have the same laminates composition, the differences of catalytic performance can be considered as the result of different pore sizes. We also prepared conventional 10-R zeolite ZSM-5 and 12-R zeolite Beta for control experiments. IEZ-Al-PLS-3(S4R) showed even higher catalytic activities than Beta as a result of its enlarged 14-R pore size.

The whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is one of the most commercially important species along the Atlantic coast of South America. Moreover, some of its biological traits (long life span, inshore feeding, high trophic position) make this species a suitable sentinel of coastal pollution. Here, we investigated contamination by multiple legacy and emerging organic pollutants, such as brominated and chlorinated flame retardants, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), in whitemouth croakers from two estuaries (Guanabara and Sepetiba Bays) located in industrialized and urbanized areas in Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil. Furthermore, we assessed how biological and ecological features could explain the observed contamination patterns. Regarding brominated flame retardants, concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) varied from 7.6 to 879.7 pg g(-1) wet weight (w.w.), with high contribution of tetra-, penta-, hexa- and deca-BDEs. The sum of chlorinated flame retardants (dechlorane-related compounds, Sigma DRC) ranged from COA of Formula: C12H10O

As the use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and the entire class of organohalogen flame retardants, is declining, the use of organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRO is increasing. In this paper, we ask whether OPFRs are a better choice than PBDEs. To address this question, we compared OPFRs with PBDEs for a wide range of properties. Exposure to OPFRs is ubiquitous in people and in outdoor and indoor environments, and OPFRs are now often found at higher levels compared to PBDE peak exposure levels. Furthermore, data from toxicity testing, epidemiological studies, and risk assessments all suggest that there are health concerns at current exposure levels for both halogenated and nonhalogenated OPFRs. Obtaining the scientific evidence needed for regulation of OPFRs can take many years. Given the large number of OPFRs in use, manufacturers can move toward healthier and safer products by developing innovative ways to reduce the risk of fire for electronics enclosures, upholstered furniture, building materials, and other consumer products without adding flame retardant chemicals.

The synthesis and characterization of the room-temperature and solution-stable silylpalladium cations (PCy3)(2)Pd-SiR3+(C6F5)(4)B- (SiR3 = SiMe2Et, SiHEt2) and (Xantphos)Pd-SiR3+(BAr4f) (SiR3 = SiMe2Et, SiHEt2; Xant-phos = 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene; BAr4f = (3,5-(CF3)(2)C6H3)(4)B-) are reported. Spectroscopic and ligand addition experiments suggest that silylpalladium complexes of the type (PCy3) Pd-SiR3+ are three-coordinate and T-shaped. Addition of dialkyl ethers to both the PCy3 and Xantphos-based silylpalladium cations resulted in the cleavage of C(sp(3))-O bonds and the generation of cationic Pd-alkyl complexes. Mechanistically enabling is the ability of silylpalladium cations to behave as sources of both electrophilic silylium ions and nucleophilic LnPd(0).

A four-parameter, Ghoderao-Dalvi-Narayan 2 cubic equation of state (GDN2 CEOS), is presented which incorporates the following: 1. The experimental value of the critical compressibility factor has been used as a fixed input parameter for calculations; 2. All the parameters (a, b, c, d) of CEOS are temperature dependent functions in the subcritical region and arc temperature independent functions in the supercritical region and; 3. A new a function is introduced with two compound specific parameters which are estimated by matching saturated vapor pressure at two fixed temperature points T-r = 0.5, 0.7. Our formalism enables us to cast three of the four parameters of the CEOS as a function of the remaining parameter. The proposed CEOS is used to predict properties of 334 pure compounds, including saturated vapor pressure and liquid density, compressed liquid density, heat capacities at the constant pressure and volume, enthalpy of vaporization, sound velocity. To calculate thermodynamic properties of a pure compound, the present CEOS require the critical temperature, the critical pressure, the Pitzer’s acentric factor, the critical compressibility factor, and two parameters of the alpha function. The saturated liquid density predictions for pure fluids are very accurate when compared with GDN1 (Ghoderao-Dalvi-Narayan 1), MPR (Modified Peng-Robinson), and PT (Patel-Teja) equations of state. Unlike MPR EOS, the proposed temperature dependent covolume parameter b in the present work satisfies all the constraints mentioned in the literature to avoid thermodynamic inconsistencies at the extreme temperature and pressure. Using van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule, the present CEOS is further used to predict bubble pressure and the vapor mole fraction of binary mixtures. The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on electrocatalysts represents a major obstacle in the development of fuel cell technology. A tremendous amount of work has reported the increasing ORR activity for catalysts. Nevertheless, when applied to practical Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA, an assembled stack of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell) configuration, the high-performance catalysts on the rotating disk electrode (RDE) may not display the same high activity as in the lab-scale tests. This led us to reexamine the ORR evaluation based on the RDE technique. With the development of high active electrocatalysts, it may become significant to determine the reasonable kinetic current at a conventional fixed potential approaching the limited current by using the Koutecky-Levich (K-L) technique on RDE for the evaluation of ORR activity. Here we describe such a challenging situation and systematically discuss the proper kinetic region when comparing the ORR activity with the unsuitable potential or Pt loading based on the K-L technique. Furthermore, the rational benchmarking guidelines are given for the evaluation of the ORR electrocatalysts.
