Investigating environmental pollution is important to understand its impact on endangered species such as green turtles (Chelonia mydas). In this study, we investigated the accumulation and potential toxicity of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and naturally occurring MeO-PBDEs in liver, fat, kidney and muscle of turtles (n = 30) of different gender, size, year of death, location and health status. Overall, POP concentrations were low and accumulation was highest in liver and lowest in fat which is likely due to the poor health of several animals, causing a remobilization of lipids and associated compounds. PCBs and p,p’-DDE dominated the POP profiles, and relatively high MeO-PBDE concentrations (2′-MeO-BDE 68 up to 192 ng/g lw, 6-MeO-BDE 47 up to 79 ng/g lw) were detected in all tissues. Only few influences of factors such as age, gender and location were found. While concentrations were low compared to other marine wildlife, biological toxicity equivalences obtained by screening the tissue extracts using the micro-EROD assay ranged from 2.8 to 356 pg/g and the highest values were observed in muscle, followed by kidney and liver. This emphazises that pollutant mixtures found in the turtles have the potential to cause dioxin-like effects in these animals and that dioxin-like compounds should not be overlooked in future studies. Diphenyl ether derivatives inhibit mycobacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibiting an enzyme, enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (InhA), which catalyses the last step in the fatty acid synthesis cycle of genus Mycobacterium. To select and validate a protein crystal structure of enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for designing inhibitors using molecular modelling, a cross-docking and correlation study was performed. A series of novel 1-(3-(3-hydroxy4-phenoxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-1-yl) ethan-1-ones were synthesized from this model and screened for their antitubercular activity against M. tuberculosis H37Rv. Compound PYN-8 showed good antitubercular activity on M. tuberculosis H37Rv (MIC = 4-7 mu M) and Mycobacterium bovis (% inhibition at 10 mu M = 95.91%). Cytotoxicity of all the synthesized derivatives was assessed using various cell lines, and they were found to be safe. Structure of PYN-8 was also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular modelling studies also corroborated the biological activity of the compounds. Further, in silico findings revealed that all these tested compounds exhibited good ADME properties and drug likeness and thus may be considered as potential candidates for further drug development.

A functional raspberry-like core-shell composite particle consisting of a conducting polyaniline (PANI) core and magnetic zinc ferrite shell is synthesized by Pickering emulsion polymerization. We aim at encapsulating fragrances made of a variety of lipophilic species to slow down their diffusion. Our strategy is to develop capsules by polymerizing the water intermediate phase of an oil-in-water-in-oil double emulsion. In other terms, our system consists in a direct emulsion of fragrance (O1) in a water phase (W) containing monomer, initiator, and cross-linker. To obtain the double emulsion, this direct emulsion, stabilized by a hydrophilic surfactant, is itself dispersed in an external lipophilic solvent used in perfumery (O2) and stabilized by a lipophilic surfactant. Polymerization of the intermediate water phase aims at obtaining a 3D network. Differently from nowadays-proposed capsules, this strategy allows polymerization only taking place in the water phase rather in the phase containing the fragrance. Moreover, the obtained 3D network is supposed to play the role of an effective barrier limiting the diffusion of the inner lipophilic species towards either the external solvent or air. Such an approach implies the combination of a formulation step to elaborate the double emulsion using two antagonistic surfactants, a hydrophilic one and a lipophilic one, and of the polymerization of the intermediate phase. Insertion of the polymerizable species in the double emulsion shall not destabilize it. Some monomers exhibiting interfacial affinity and interfering with the formulation of the double emulsion have to be avoided. By varying the nature of the monomers and the cross-linker to monomer ratio, capsules with high encapsulation efficiencies and with various mechanical properties have been obtained.

A broad spectrum of applications of magnetic nanoparticles leads to the need for the precise tuning of their magnetic properties. In this study, a series of magnetite and zinc-ferrite nanoparticles were successfully prepared by modified high-temperature synthesis in a controlled gas atmosphere. Nanoparticles with different zinc to iron ratios and pure Fe3O4 were obtained. The structure of the nanoparticles was studied by transmission electron microscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy. These revealed the single domain character of the nanoparticles and the influence of the synthesis temperature and zinc to iron ratio on their shape and size. Chemical structure was characterized by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy coupled with an argon gas cluster ion beam (Ar-GCIB) allowed the study of subsequent layers of the nanoparticles without altering their chemical structure. This revealed the presence of a carbon layer on all nanoparticles consisting of capping agents used in the synthesis and revealed the core-shell character of the zinc ferrite particles. In addition, different types of zinc infusions in the nanoparticle structure were observed when using different Zn/Fe ratios. Finally, magnetic studies performed by means of vibrating sample magnetometry proved the superparamagnetic behavior of all the samples.

Cleavage of aromatic ether bonds is a key step for lignin valorization, and the development of novel heterogeneous catalysts with high activity is crucial. Herein, bifunctional Ru/hydroxyapatite has been prepared via ion exchange and subsequent reduction. The obtained Ru/hydroxyapatite could efficiently catalyze the cleavage of various compounds containing aromatic ether bonds via transfer hydrogenolysis without additional bases. Systematic studies indicated that the basic nature of hydroxyapatite and electron-enriched Ru sites resulted in the high activity of the catalyst. A mechanism study revealed that the direct cleavage of aromatic ether bonds was the main reaction pathway.

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs) can be used as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal enhancement agents for petroleum exploration. This enhancement effect is uniform if SPIONs are monodisperse in size and in composition; yet it is challenging to synthesize mono disperse particles that do not aggregate in high salinity petroleum brine. Here, we report a method to synthesize individual SPIONs coated with tunable surface coating densities of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (pAMPS) with a catechol end-group (pAMPS*). To establish parameters under which pAMPS*-coated SPIONS do not aggregate, we compared computational predictions with experimental results for variations in pAMPS* chain length and surface coverage. Using this combined theoretical and experimental approach, we show that singly dispersed SPIONs remained stabilized in petroleum brine for up to 75 h with high surface density pAMPS*.

Silicon-containing arylacetylene (PSA) resins exhibit excellent heat resistance, yet their brittleness limits the applications. We proposed using acetylene-terminated polyimides (ATPI) as an additive to enhance the toughness of the PSA resins and maintain excellent heat resistance. A material genome approach (MGA) was first established for designing and screening the acetylene-terminated polyimides, and a polyimide named ATPI was filtered out by using this MGA. The ATPI was synthesized and blended with PSA resins to improve the toughness of the thermosets. Influences of the added ATPI contents and prepolymerization temperature on the properties were examined. The result shows that the blend resin can resist high temperature and bear excellent mechanical properties. The molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to understand the mechanism behind the improvement of toughness. The present work provides a method for the rapid design and screening of high-performance polymeric materials.
