A rapid, sensitive, and practical QuEChERS method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 chemical adjuvant residues in samples of fruits (apple, nectarine, grape) and vegetables (tomato, cucumber, spinach). All target compounds were separated in less than 16 min. Samples were extracted with acetonitrile, and the types of extraction salt and cleanup sorbent were optimized. The optimized method was validated by evaluating the linearity, accuracy, precision, and matrix effect. The recoveries of the 16 pesticides adjuvants ranged from 61.2 to 116.3% with relative standard deviations lower than 11.6%. Limits of detection ranged from 0.21 to 3.02 mu g/kg, and limits of quantification ranged from 0.71 to 10.07 mu g/kg. Finally, the developed method was successfully employed to identify and quantify pesticide adjuvant residues in the analysis of 30 real fruit and vegetable samples.

Marine plastic debris, including microplastics (<5 mm in size), comprises a suite of chemical ingredients and sorbed chemical contaminants. Thus, microplastics are a potential, and debated, source of anthropogenic chemicals for bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Several studies have investigated the role of microplastics as a vector of contaminants to marine organisms via modeling exercises, laboratory experiments, and field studies. Here, we examined relationships among chemical contaminants and microplastics in lanternfish (family Myctophidae), an important link in marine food webs, from the North Pacific Ocean as a case study from the field. We compared the body burden of several chemical groups (bisphenol A [BPA], nonylphenol [4-NP], octylphenol [4n-OP], alkylphenol ethoxylates [APEs], pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], and polybrominated diphenyl ethers [PBDEs]) in fish caught within and outside the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre where plastic is known to accumulate. We also tested whether there was a relationship between chemical concentrations in fish and plastic density at each sampling location. Mean concentrations of common plastic constituents (BPA, 4-NP, 4n-OP, APEs, and total PBDEs) were comparable between myctophids collected within and outside the North Pacific Gyre. Pesticides were higher in lanternfish caught outside the gyre and were associated with lower plastic density. Total PCBs were also higher in fish outside the gyre. In contrast, lower chlorinated PCB congeners were higher in fish residing in the accumulation zone and were correlated with higher plastic density. This finding is consistent with other studies demonstrating an association between lower chlorinated PCBs and plastics in biota and suggests that microplastic may be a transport mechanism for some chemicals in nature. Nano-colloidal suspensions of nanomaterials in a fluid, nanofluids, are appealing because of their interesting properties related to heat transfer processes. While nanomaterials based on transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have been widely studied in catalysis, sensing, and energy storage applications, there are few studies of nanofluids based on TMCs for heat transfer applications. In this study, the preparation and analysis of nanofluids based on 2D-WS2 in a typical heat transfer fluid (HTF) used in concentrating solar power (CSP) plants are reported. Nanofluids prepared using an exfoliation process exhibited well-defined nanosheets and were highly stable. The nanofluids were characterized in terms of properties related to their application in CSP. The presence of WS2 nanosheets did not modify significantly the surface tension, the viscosity, or the isobaric specific heat, but the thermal conductivity was improved by up to 30%. The U-r factor, which characterizes the thermal efficiency of the fluid in the solar collector, shows an enhancement of up to 22% in the nanofluid, demonstrating great promise for CSP applications. The Reynolds number and friction factor of the fluid were not significantly modified by the addition of the nanomaterial to the HTF, which is also positive for practical applications in CSP plants. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the nanoparticle/fluid interface showed an irreversible dissociative adsorption of diphenyl oxide molecules on the WS2 edge, with very low kinetic barrier. The resulting decoration of the WS2 edge dramatically affects the nature of the interface interactions and is therefore expected to affect significantly the rheological and transport properties of the nanofluids.

The comparability of data from active (ACT) and passive sampling (PAS) of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in air is hindered by uncertainties related to the derivation of sampling rates and concentrations, as well as differences in the duration, volume and frequency of sampling. Although data from ACT have been used extensively in short-term PAS calibration studies, no attempts have been made to evaluate the comparability of long-term trends calculated from PAS to established ACT trends. This is crucial, as continuous long-term ACT is unfeasible in most regions of the world. To address these challenges, we calculated and compared trends for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) at the six sites in Europe with at least 5 years of co-located ACT and PAS data (2012-2016): Birkenes, Kosetice, Pallas, Rao, Storhofoi and Zeppelin. Strong agreement of ACT and PAS trends was observed for most OCPs and PCBs. Apart from two PCBs at Storhofoi, all pairs of ACT and PAS trends followed the same direction. However, differences in the magnitude, significance and confidence intervals of their slopes were observed for some compounds and were primarily attributed to the short duration of the PAS time series. Despite some limitations, our results suggest that the comparability of ACT and PAS POP trends will continue to improve with additional years of data. This study confirms the suitability of PAS for the calculation of long-term POP trends in air, and highlights the importance of continuous sampling at established monitoring sites with consistent analytical methods.

We report on the shape, composition (from Pt95Zn5 to Pt77Zn23), and surface chemistry of Pt-Zn nanoparticles obtained by reduction of precursors M2+(acac) (-)(2) (M2+: Pt2+ and Zn2+) in oleylamine, which serves as both solvent and ligand. We show first that the addition of phenyl ether or benzyl ether determines the composition and shape of the nanoparticles, which point to an adsorbate-controlled synthesis. The organic (ligand)/inorganic (nanoparticles) interface is characterized on the structural and chemical level. We observe that the particles, after washing with ethanol, are coated with oleylamine and the oxidation products of the latter, namely, an aldimine and a nitrile. After exposure to air, the particles oxidize, covering themselves with a few monolayer thick ZnO film, which is certainly discontinuous when the particles are low in zinc. Pt-Zn particles are unstable and prone to losing Zn. We have strong indications that the driving force is the preferential oxidation of the less noble metal. Finally, we show that adsorption of CO on the surface of nanoparticles modifies the oxidation state of amine ligands and attribute it to the displacement of hydrogen adsorbed on Pt. All the structural and chemical information provided by the combination of electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy allows us to give a fairly accurate picture of the surface of nanoparticles and to better understand why Pt-Zn alloys are efficient in certain electrocatalytic reactions such as the oxidation of methanol.

Non-equilibrium plasma technology provides an unconventional but promising solution for the cleaning of tar contaminated bio-syngas in biomass gasification. This work is focused on the reforming of mixed naphthalene (C10H8) and toluene (C7H8) as typical single ring and double ring tar model components using a gliding arc discharge (GAD) reactor. The influence of naphthalene content, steam/carbon molar ratio and discharge power on the destruction of C10H8 and C7H8 was evaluated to understand their effects on the tar conversion, gas yield, and the energy consumption. Adding H2O to the plasma process forms OH radicals, creating additional reaction routes for the step-wised oxidation of naphthalene, toluene and their fragments towards the production of CO, CO2, and water. The highest conversion of naphthalene and toluene (similar to 80% overall) was obtained when the steam/carbon molar ratio changed between 1.0 and 1.5, which was dependent on the balance between two opposite effects due to the presence of steam: positive effect of OH radicals and negative effect of electron attachment on water molecules. The highest energy efficiency (53.6 g/kWh) was obtained for the conversion of mixed tar compounds, which is by far the highest in previously reported works. CO, H-2 and C2H2 were the major gases with the highest CO yield of 38.6% and H-2 yield of 39.1%. Emission spectroscopic diagnostics was employed to understand the contribution of chemically reactive species to the GAD reaction. Possible reaction pathways in the plasma reforming of mixed naphthalene and toluene were proposed based on the plasma spectroscopic diagnostics coupled with a comprehensive analysis of major gas products and condensable by-products.

The use of copper for reducing nosocomial infections or healthcare-acquired infections (HAI) has been carried out in intensive care units (ICU) by replacing some objects generally made of stainless steel or other materials with solid pieces of copper. The authors’ proposal for a sustainable use of copper consists of introducing it in a lamina + adhesive format. This proposal has been tested in an ICU at the Ceuta Hospital in Spain. It has been found to provide an equally efficient solution as antibacterial material than the usual solid format, but with only a layer of 50 microns of copper, which is a high-cost and limited resource. After that intervention, some improvements are also proposed: a standardization of the pieces chosen to cover with a lamina of copper for saving material; and another method of replacement aiming to lower the time that the ICU cannot be used. To ensure that the proposed bonding method is harmless to human health and the adhesive does not interfere with the indoor environment by releasing toxic chemicals, the lamina + adhesive sheet has been further tested. The results and proposals are briefly shown.

Viscosity of body fluid is an established biomarker of pathological conditions. Abnormality of cellular viscosity occurs when cells are challenged with external stresses. Small molecule probes to assess the viscosity are sought after for both disease diagnostics and basic studies. Fluorescence based probes are particular attractive due to their potentials for convenient and high spatiotemporal resolution microscopic monitoring of biological samples. The dyes with a floppy push-pull backbone or dyes with a rotatable substituent exhibits a viscosity responsive fluorescence enhancement and therefore viable viscosity probes. The scaffold of the existing viscosity probes contains typically one such floppy site. Therefore, they typically linearly respond to log(viscosity). We argue that minor viscosity fluctuation could potentially be physiological as the biological system is dynamic. We wish to develop a type of conceptually-new, threshold-limited viscosity probes, to complement the existing probes. Such probes do not exhibit a fluorescence enhancement when challenged with minor and presumably physiological enhancement of viscosity. When the viscosity is higher than a certain threshold, their fluorescence turns on. We hypothesize that a dye with two far-apart floppy sites could potentially yield such a threshold-limited signal and designed VPZ2 and VPZ3. Through spectral titration, VPZ3 was found to yield the desired threshold-limited signal. VPZ3 was suitable for in vitro bioimaging of viscosity under one-photon or two-photon excitation. VPZ3 is potentially useful in many downstream applications. Future work includes fine-tune of the threshold to allow tailored limit for fluorescence turn-on to better meet the need of different applications. Besides the implications in the real-world applications, the design concept could also be translated to design of alternative substrates.

Various optical clearing methods have emerged as powerful tools for deep biological imaging. Organic solvent-based clearing methods, such as three-dimensional imaging of solvent-cleared organs (3DISCO), present the advantages of high clearing efficiency and size reduction for panoptic imaging of large samples such as whole organs and even whole bodies. However, 3DISCO results in a rapid quenching of endogenous fluorescence, which has impeded its application. Here, we propose an advanced method named FDISCO to overcome this limitation. FDISCO can effectively preserve the fluorescence of various fluorescent probes and can achieve a long storage time of months while retaining potent clearing capability. We used FDISCO for high-resolution imaging and reconstruction of neuronal and vascular networks. Moreover, FDISCO is compatible with labeling by multiple viruses and enables fine visualization of neurons with weak fluorescence labeling in the whole brain. FDISCO represents an effective alternative to the three-dimensional mapping of whole organs and can be extensively used in biomedical studies.

A new marine sediment certified reference material (IAEA 459) with very low concentrations (gkg(-1)) for a variety of persistent organic contaminants (POPs) listed by the Stockholm Convention, as well as other POPs and priority substances (PSs) listed in many environmental monitoring programs was developed by the IAEA. The sediment material was collected from the Ham River estuary in South Korea, and the assigned final values were derived from robust statistics on the results provided by selected laboratories which demonstrated technical and quality competence, following the guidance given in ISO Guide 35. The robust mean of the laboratory means was assigned as certified values, for those compounds where the assigned value was derived from at least five datasets and its relative expanded uncertainty was less than 40% of the assigned value (most of the values ranging from 8 to 20%). All the datasets were derived from at least two different analytical techniques which have allowed the assignment of certified concentrations for 22 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, 6 organochlorinated (OC) pesticides, 5 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 18 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs). Mass fractions of compounds that did not fulfill the criteria of certification are considered information values, which include 29 PAHs, 11 PCBs, 16 OC pesticides, and 5 PBDEs. The extensive characterization and associated uncertainties at concentration levels close to the marine sediment quality guidelines will make CRM 459 a valuable matrix reference material for use in marine environmental monitoring programs.
