Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), present in the environment, animals, and humans. Their levels, distribution, and human exposure have been studied extensively, and over the last decade, various legal measures have been taken to prohibit or minimize their production and use due to the increasing amount of evidence of their harmful effects on human and animal health.Our aim here was to make a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the levels and distribution of PBDEs in the aquatic environment, air, and soil, in indoor dust, and in humans. To fulfill this, we searched through Web of Science for literature data reported in the last five years (2015-2019) on levels of at least six key PBDE congeners in abovementioned matrices. According to our summarized data, significant PBDE mass concentrations/fractions are still being detected in various sample types across the world, which implies that PBDE contamination is an ongoing problem. Secondary sources of PBDEs like contaminated soils and landfills, especially those with electronic and electrical waste (e-waste), represent a particular risk to the future and therefore require a special attention of scientists.

Nanoparticles layered with palladium(0) were prepared from nano-sized magnetic Fe3O4 by coating it with silica and then reacting sequentially with phenylselenyl chloride under an N-2 atmosphere and palladium(ii) chloride in water. The resulting Fe3O4@SiO2@SePh@Pd(0) NPs are magnetically retrievable and the first example of NPs in which the outermost layer of Pd(0) is mainly held by selenium. The weight percentage of Pd in the NPs was found to be 1.96 by ICP-AES. The NPs were authenticated via TEM, SEM-EDX, XPS, and powder XRD and found to be efficient as catalysts for the C-O and C-C (Suzuki-Miyaura) coupling reactions of ArBr/Cl in water. The oxidation state of Pd in the NPs having size distribution from similar to 12 to 18 nm was inferred as zero by XPS. They can be recycled more than seven times. The main features of the proposed protocols are their mild reaction conditions, simplicity, and efficiency as the catalyst can be separated easily from the reaction mixture by an external magnet and reused for a new reaction cycle. The optimum loading (in mol% of Pd) was found to be 0.1-1.0 and 0.01-1.0 for O-arylation and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, respectively. For ArCl, the required amount of NPs was more as compared to that needed for ArBr. The nature of catalysis is largely heterogeneous.

Extensive characterizations, mainly by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques, are reported for co-crystalline (CC) poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)-oxide (PPO) films with many different low-molecular-mass guest molecules. These characterizations are also reported for the corresponding nanoporous crystalline (NC) phases, as obtained by suitable guest-removal procedures. Two well-separated NC forms, hereafter named alpha and beta, are obtained by guest removal from two well-separated groups of CC forms. alpha and beta NC forms can be easily recognized by reflections in WAXD patterns as well as by suitable FTIR crystalline peaks. Density and degree of crystallinity measurements confirm that both NC phases exhibit a density definitely smaller than for the amorphous phase (rho(am) = 1.04 g/cm(3) rho(beta) = 0.95 g/cm(3) > rho(alpha) = 0.93 g/cm(3)). Density functional theory calculations combined with geometrical analysis on PPO model systems indicate conformations suitable to fit the observed chain periodicities of the two crystalline forms (c = 5.28 and 5.47 angstrom, for alpha and beta NC forms, respectively).

With the aid of direct heating through microwave irradiation in non-aqueous media, nanocrystalline tungsten(vi) oxide is achievable in 30 minutes at 200 degrees C, faster and at a lower temperature than conventional synthesis methods. Forming in a platelet morphology, these particles are as small as 20 nm with a BET surface area of 37 m(2) g(-1) WO3. These nanoplatelets are active for the photocatalytic oxidation of the 1 degrees alcohols benzyl alcohol (rate constant, k of 2.6 x 10(-3) h(-1)) and 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furfural (k of 0.01 h(-1)) using 10 mg of WO3 with 2 mL of 0.250 M substrate in acetonitrile and a 150 mW cm(-2) 460 nm blue LED source. As expected, these rate constants are larger than those observed for commercially prepared, micron-sized WO3. XPS analysis shows that during catalysis, the concentration of W5+ on the surface increases, but the nanoplatelets are stable under these reaction conditions. The overall morphology and size of the particles are retained through the reactions. Moreover, the nanoplatelets are recyclable-showing no loss in activity for four reaction cycles.

Here, we report on a reproducible one-pot synthesis of high-quality and monodispersed CdS semiconducting nanocrystals (NCs) by mixing precursors cadmium acetate and elemental sulfur into the new solvent system of dibenzyl ether and oleylamine without using any extra reagent or precursor activator. The NCs (5 nm) exhibited a dominant band-edge emission with a good photoluminescence quantum yield of 13.76% without trap emission. The CdS NCs were characterized using UV?Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The practical efficiency of the synthesized NCs was proved by applying the synthesized CdS NCs as the tracer in the engineering of an immunosandwich biosensor to evaluate the cardiac troponin (cTn) marker for the diagnosis and monitoring of myocardial infarction (MI). The biosensor revealed significant analytical efficiency with the limit of detection of 2 ng L-1 and the linear dynamic range of 5?1000 ng L-1, which is lower than the existing cutoff values (13?20 ng L-1). Having capitalized on the anodic stripping voltammetry method, the screen-printed biosensor could efficiently detect the cTn markers. Therefore, the biosensor is proposed to be used in clinical settings for fast, sensitive, and accurate monitoring of cTn markers.

A highly efficient Ni/N-C catalyst was synthesized by facile pyrolysis of a Ni-containing metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF), and its catalytic hydrogenolysis performance towards C-O bonds in lignin was evaluated in detail using diphenyl ether (DPE) as a model compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses show that the flower-like nanosheets of the Ni-MOF shrink, forming a loose and ordered spherical structure during pyrolysis. Under the optimal conditions, DPE was completely converted and the selectivity to monomers (benzene, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane) reached 99.1%. During the catalytic hydrogenolysis conversion (CHC) of DPE, the direct cleavage of the C-aromatic-O bond affording benzene and phenol is the major reaction pathway, and a low H2 pressure is crucial to increase the monomer selectivity. Furthermore, Ni/N-C-450 shows high hydrogenolysis activity for other lignin-derived aryl ethers, such as benzyl phenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, dinaphthalene ether, benzyl 2-naphthyl ether and 3-methoxyphenol.

A trifluoroacetic-acid-mediated desulfurilative sulfonylthiolation of arenes using SS-morpholino dithiosulfonate is described. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are extensively used as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in different types of materials, which have been listed as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention in 2009 and 2017. Due to their ubiquities in the environment and toxicities, PBDEs have posed great threat to both human health and ecosystems. The aim of this review is to offer a comprehensive understanding of the exposure pathways, levels and trends and associated health risks of PBDEs in human body in a global scale. We systematically reviewed and described the scientific data of PBDE researches worldwide from 2010 to March 2020, focusing on the following three areas: (1) sources and human external exposure pathways of PBDEs; (2) PBDE levels and trends in humans; (3) human data of PBDEs toxicity. Dietary intake and dust ingestion are dominant human exposure pathways. PBDEs were widely detected in human samples, especially in human serum and human milk. Data showed that PBDEs are generally declining in human samples worldwide as a result of their phasing out. Due to the common use of PBDEs, their levels in humans from the USA were generally higher than that in other countries. High concentrations of PBDEs have been detected in humans from PBDE production regions and e-waste recycling sites. BDE-47, -153 and -99 were proved to be the primary congeners in humans. Human toxicity data demonstrated that PBDEs have extensively endocrine disruption effects, developmental effects, and carcinogenic effects among different populations.
