Bioactive Peptides from Sesame Meal for Broiler Chickens: Its Influence on the Serum Biochemical Metabolites, Immunity Responses and Nutrient Digestibility

This study was conducted to evaluate and compare the effects of bioactive peptides derived from sesame meal (BPSM), avilamycin as an antibiotic and mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) as a prebiotic supplementation on the some serum metabolites, immune response, and ileal nutrient digestibility of broiler chickens. A total of 300 broiler chickens were randomly placed in 6 treatments with 5 replicates of 10 birds each, for 32 days. The experimental treatments consisted of a basal corn-soybean meal or control diet, control diet + 10 mg/kg avilamycin, control diet + 2 gr/kg MOS, control diet + 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg BPSM. According to the results, dietary treatments had no effects on the serum concentration of IgG and IgM (immunity indices), cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and enzyme activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) as an index for liver health (P > 0.05). While the blood concentration of albumin increased in broiler chickens fed diet containing 100 mg/kg BPSM (P < 0.05).In nutrient digestibility, addition of 100 mg/kg of BPSM and MOS increased the ileal digestibility coefficients of crude protein and ether extract in broiler chickens (P < 0.05). Likewise, ileal digestibility of vital amino acids including histidine, methionine, and tyrosine improved in broiler chickens, which received 100 mg/kg BPSM diet, while threonine digestibility increased in broilers fed MOS diet (P < 0.05). Body weight gain and food conversion ratio improved (P < 0.05) in the birds received MOS and 100 mg/kg BPSM, respectively. Considering the results of this study, it is concluded that BPSM can be used as a diet supplement in broiler chickens with no negative effect on the immune response and nutrient digestibility. Effect of laying sequence and selection of maternal tissues in assessment of maternal transfer of organohalogenated contaminants during chicken egg formation: A pilot study

Many studies have reported maternal transfer of organic contaminants in oviparous species, with inconsonant results. Egg-laying sequence and selected maternal tissues may impact on assessment of potential maternal transfer of contaminants. Here, this hypothesis was verified by exposing chickens (Gallus domesticus) to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and dechlorane plus (DPs). Concentrations in eggs laid during exposure exhibited periodic fluctuations (conforming to egg-laying cycles) and a decreasing trend during depuration. Fluctuation patterns of DPs and BDE209 differed from those of other compounds. The PBDE congener profiles in eggs were dominated by BDE209 during exposure and by BDE100 and 153 during depuration. The abundance of PCB congener (CB138) which is recalcitrant to metabolism increased with laying sequence. Maternal transfer potential was negatively correlated (P = 0.0014, R-2 = 0.7874) to the log K-OW of chemicals (log K-OW >7) when the muscle, heart, lung, or stomach was used. No correlations were found when the liver, fat, kidneys, or intestine was used (log K-OW >7), although DPs and BDE209 showed the highest maternal transfer potential. Different fluctuation patterns of DPs and BDE209 in eggs and increased abundance of BDE209 in eggs laid in the initial egg-laying period imply that the liver, fat, kidney, or intestinal tissues could be more appropriate in assessing maternal transfer of the target analytes. Global distribution and trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in human blood and breast milk: A quantitative meta-analysis of studies published in the period 2000-2019

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of flame-retardants that are found throughout the human body. However, global trends and diversity of the concentrations in human body and the potential risks remain largely unresolved. Based on published data during 2000-2019, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis to understand the burden and risks of PBDEs in humans and their spatiotemporal variations. The report provides a global picture of PBDE concentrations in human blood and breast milk. We found the levels of body PBDE burden in the North American population were higher than those from Asia and Europe. However, high concentrations of blood PBDEs in occupational population from Asia were observed, largely because of poorly controlled e-waste recycling operations. Pentaand deca-BDE were the main contributors in North America and Asia, respectively, reflecting the difference in the production and use of these chemicals. On a global scale, no substantial decreases in the concentrations of PBDEs in the blood and breast milk were observed, although most of the chemicals have been phased out. The results suggested that humans will be exposed to PBDEs with relatively high concentrations in a certain period because of the legacy in products and the environmental media. And the potential health risks necessitate careful study in the future. Our results also remind that the uses of degradation-resistant chemicals should be attached great importance to their safety.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs): Contamination in food, humans and dietary exposure

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) have been recognised as environmental pollutants for decades but their occurrence in food has only recently been reported. They elicit the same type of toxic response as analogous polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) with similar potencies and effects, and share similar origins – inadvertent production during combustion and occurrence as by-products in industrial chemicals. Surprisingly, PBDD/Fs have received considerably less attention than PCDD/Fs, perhaps because determination requires a higher degree of analytical competence, a result of the higher adsorptivity and lability associated with carbon-bromine bonding. For most populations, the principal exposure pathway is dietary intake. The PBDD/F toxicity arising from occurrence in foods has often been expressed as toxic equivalents (TEQs) using the same scheme developed for PCDD/Fs. This approach is convenient, but resulting TEQ estimates are more uncertain, given the known differences in response for some analogous congeners and also the different patterns of PBDD/F occurrence confirmed by the newer data. Further studies to consolidate potency factors would help to refine TEQ estimates. Characteristically, most foods and human tissues show more frequent and higher PBDF concentrations relative to PBDDs, reflecting major source patterns. Occurrence in food ranges from <0.01 to several thousand pg/g (or up to 0.3 pg TEQ/g whole weight) which is comparable to PCDD/F occurrence (Sigma PBDD/F TEQs are underestimated as not all relevant congeners are included). Plant based foods show higher PBDD/F: PCDD/F TEQ ratios. Reported PBDD/F dietary intakes suggest that some population groups, particularly young children, may exceed the revised tolerable weekly intake for dioxin-like contaminants (2 pg TEQ/kg bw/week), even for mean consumption estimated with lower bound data. It is evident that the omission of PBDD/Fs from the TEQ scheme results in a significant underestimation of the cumulative toxicity and associated risk arising from this mode of action. First report on the sources, vertical distribution and human health risks of legacy and novel per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in groundwater from the Loess Plateau, China

In this study, legacy and novel per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were measured in groundwater samples collected from the Loess Plateau of China to understand their occurrence, sources and health risks. The total concentration of PFASs ranged from 2.78 to 115 ng/L, with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) as the dominant compound. Many emerging PFASs, including 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonates (FTS), 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (Cl-PFESAs), ammonium 4,8-dioxa-3H-perfluorononanoate (ADONA), and hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO) homologues were frequently detected in 96.7-100% of the samples. Multiple source apportionment analyses indicated that the PFASs in the groundwater mainly originated from industrial activities, but in rural areas, agricultural activities also contributed. The total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay indicated that there were substantial unknown precursors of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in the groundwater samples. The total concentration of PFASs decreased with the well depth, while the PFAA-precursors displayed contrasting vertical profile trends, which might be due to the suppressed microbial transformation in the groundwater. The potential human health risk caused by PFAS exposure via drinking groundwater in the Loess Plateau was low, except for one site that was close to the industry bases.

Electropolymerizable isocyanate-based electrolytic additive to mitigate diffusion-controlled self-discharge for highly stable and capacitive activated carbon supercapacitors

To mitigate the self-discharge of supercapacitors (SCs), numerous researches have reported about the effective use of cell resistance, although this might provoke a deterioration of charge/discharge performances. In this work, isocyanate-based electrolytic additive, 2-isocyanatoethylmethacrylate (ICEMA), is polymerized by two methods, in-situ electropolymerization (EP) and radical-polymerization (RP), on activated carbon (AC) electrode to mitigate the diffusion-controlled self-discharge, which is a major contribution to the self-discharge herein. Although the radical-polymerized PICEMA reveals favorable suppression of self-discharge, only confined in bulk electrolyte and meso-region, this exhibits severe increases in all impedance parameters and deteriorated charge/discharge capabilities. The electropolymerized PICEMA, however, meets the bifunctional perspective, revealing aptly retained capacitance and suppressed self-discharge behavior throughout microand meso-regions. ICEMA is effectively electropolymerized on positive AC electrode at + 0.9 similar to 1.2 V (vs. AC), which is confirmed by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrochemical quartz microbalance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The functionality of isocyanate group to suppress self-discharge is also confirmed by comparing methoxy group of ethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (EGMEMA). (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Human Follicular Fluid Dysregulate Mural and Cumulus Granulosa Cell Gene Expression

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a major class of flame retardants incorporated into numerous consumer products, leach out into dust resulting in widespread exposure. There is evidence from in vitro and in vivo animal studies that PBDEs affect ovarian granulosa cell function and follicular development, yet human studies of their association with female infertility are inconclusive. Here, we tested the hypothesis that exposure to the PBDEs in follicular fluid is associated with dysregulation of gene expression in the mural and cumulus granulosa cells collected from women undergoing in vitro fertilization by intracytoplasmic sperm injection. The median concentration of the Sigma 10PBDEs detected in the follicular fluid samples (n = 37) was 15.04 pg/g wet weight. RNA microarray analyses revealed that many genes were differentially expressed in mural and cumulus granulosa cells. Highest vs lowest quartile exposure to the Sigma(10) PBDEs or to 2 predominant PBDE congeners, BDE-47 or BDE-153, was associated with significant effects on gene expression in both cell types. Mural granulosa cells were generally more sensitive to PBDE exposure compared to cumulus cells. Overall, gene expression changes associated with BDE-47 exposure were similar to those for Sigma 10PBDEs but distinct from those associated with BDE-153 exposure. Interestingly, exposure to BDE-47 and Sigma 10PBDEs activated the expression of genes in pathways that are important in innate immunity and inflammation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that exposure to these environmental chemicals is associated with the dysregulation of pathways that play an essential role in ovulation.

Effect of refrigerant/oil solubility on thermodynamic performance of the evaporator working with R600a and DME

Isobutane (R600a) and dimethyl ether (DME) as promising refrigerants have attracted wide attention. To better understand their evaporative performance in the presence of oil, the solubilities were measured for R600a and DME in squalane from 293.15 K to 348.15 K. The data was correlated by the NRTL model. A new pressure-enthalpy-vapor quality diagram, which is applied to pure refrigerant and refrigerant/oil mixtures with various circulating oil mass fractions, is presented based on the data. The critical vapor quality was found in the isotherm of the refrigerant/oil mixture, and it depends on the circulating oil mass fraction and refrigerant/oil solubility. The higher critical vapor quality, the greater contribution of the latent heat, which is beneficial for heat transfer. The enthalpy changes through an evaporator with and without taking into account the effect of oil, as well as the non-evaporated quantity of refrigerant at the evaporator outlet, were also analyzed. The enthalpy change ratio increases with an increase of superheat and decreases with an increase in mass fraction of circulating oil. The non-evaporated quantity decreases with an increase of superheat and increases with an increase in the mass fraction of oil circulation. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd.

Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether 3 (PODE3) as an alternative fuel to reduce aerosol pollution

Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether 3 (PODE3) is a highly promising renewable fuel. Not only does it have physical characteristics which are suitable for practical engine applications, but it is also expected to facilitate prominent soot reduction. In this work, neat PODE3 is added to diesel in an engine to evaluate its practicality in terms of curbing aerosol pollution arising from diesel engines, as well as improving energy efficiency for easing global energy shortage. PODE3 has been found capable of offering soot reduction across all engine loads. In particular, 20% of PODE3 addition to diesel has demonstrated soot reduction at all loads, with a remarkable particulate matter reduction factor of 3.55 at 50% load. However, although with such impressive 71.8% soot reduction at medium load, it can cause a spike increase of 71.2% in particle number concentration, owing largely to ultrafine particles. Furthermore, it has been discovered that PODE3 contributes minimal changes to energy efficiency and that the usage of PODE3 has minimal impact on the fuel economy by virtue of PODE3’s high density. Moreover, a manifestation of a nucleation-accumulation mode particle trade-off relationship has been observed in this work. The evaluation of PODE3’s practicality serves to bring into perspective the practicality of the fuel in terms of realistic utilization, to set it in a critical context for providing insights towards future research.
