To a stirred solution of ethyl 4-chloro-2-methyIthiopyrimidine-5-carboxylate (2.24 g, 9.62 mmol) in 35 mL of anhydrous tetrahydrofuran was added triethylamine (4.00 mL, 2.90 g, 28.72 mmol).
