To the mixture are added cesium carbonate (978 mg, 3 mmol) and water (3 mL). The vial is sealed and subjected to microwave irradiation (150 C, 15 min). The mixture is filtered through a syringe filter and washed with ethyl acetate. Water is added and the mixture extracted with ethyl acetate (4x). The organic phase is dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated. The crude material is purified by flash chromatography (ethylacetate/hexanes gradient) to afford 4-(3,5-difluoro-4-methoxyphenyl)pyridine A5b as a white solid: 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDC13) delta 8.69 (d, J= 6 Hz, 2 H), 7.44 (d, J= 6 Hz, 2H), 7.22 (d, J = 9.6 Hz, 2H), 4.09 (s, 3H); MS calcd. for C12Hi0F2NO ([M+H]+): 222.1, found: 222.1.
