A solution of sodium nitrite (9.2 g, 0.135 mol) in water (20 ml) was added dropwise to a solution of 2-phenoxyaniline (25 g, 0.135 mol) in 40% hydrobromic acid (50 ml) at 0 C. and stirred for another 10 minutes. The diethyl ether layer was washed with 5% hydrochloric acid, 10% potassium hydroxide, water, brine, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to give the crude intermediate. The sub.-title compound (14.8 g, 45%) was obtained by column purification of the crude intermediate using pet ether as eluent
