A stirred mixture of 1-benzyloxy-3-bromo-benzene (10.56 g, 40.1 mmol) and dry THF (35 mL) was cooled to -78 C., evacuated and refilled with nitrogen for 10 cycles. The combined organic phases were washed with water (2*80 mL), dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to oil, which was purified by flash column chromatography (EtOAc/Hexane) to give (3-benzyloxy-phenyl)-(3,5-dimethoxy-phenyl)-methanol as an oil (11.54 g, 82% yield): 1H NMR (CDCl3) delta 2.21 (d, J=4 Hz, 1H, OH), 3.76 (s, 6H, 2OCH3), 5.04 (s, 2H, CH2), 5.72 (d, J=4 Hz, 1H, CH), 6.36 (t, J=2 Hz, 1H, Ar), 6.54 (d, J=2 Hz, 2H, Ar), 6.85-7.04 (m, 3H, Ar), 7.21-7.43 (m, 6H, Ar).
