In this work, the selective hydroxylation of aromatic iodides RI (R = Ph, 2-methylphenyl, 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl, etc.) and 1-iodo-4-(4-iodophenyl)benzene to produce phenols ROH and 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)phenol using an atomically dispersed copper catalyst (Cu-ZnO-ZrO2) under mild reaction conditions was reported. The reactions were conducted without the use of addnl. organic ligands, and the protection of an inert atm. environment is not required. The catalyst can be easily prepared, scalable, and is very efficient for a wide range of substrates.
