Benzylation of alcs. with benzyl (Z)-2,2,2-trifluoro-N-(2-alkynylphenyl)acetimidates I (R1 = nBu, C6H5, 4-CF3C6H4, 4-MeOC6H4; R2 = H, NO2, OMe) in the presence of a cationic gold(I) catalyst was investigated. Reagent I (R1 = C6H5; R2 = OMe) was the most effective, affording benzyl ethers in good yields. This results indicate that these gold(I)-activated imidates are effective leaving groups.
